I do think they should be thinking if the music will be liked by the judges or not. Obviously there are a lot of cases where creative choices worked, or where judges gave crazy PCS far above what the skater(s) deserved (Tarasova/Morozov's Candyman), but it should be considered. I think Alina choosing Don Quixote was a brilliant choice - little to interpret, just lots of energy and musical cues perfect for her jumps - and probably helped get her the gold. On the other hand, I think Bradie's choice of Cinderella was holding her back on the PCS end.
Obviously USFS has made bad recommendations in the past (asking Jason to do away with Riverdance), but generally they're pretty spot on.
I don't think they should care about costume as much, as that isn't directly in the score most of the time, but they need to be conscious of costume violations. I haven't seen any in ladies, but in synchro I've seen one (skirts too long - called only at Worlds), and I've seen at least one in dance and a few more that should've been called.
