When do the judges get to do their business of judging?
During the actual competition.

They shouldn’t imo be spending months ahead of time stressing about if a skater is too distracted by school, boyfriends, endorsement opportunities Etc or trying to guess if their music will be liked by other judges or not, or if their costume is right.

But liking the music and costume is some of the central BS of the sport

I do think they should be thinking if the music will be liked by the judges or not. Obviously there are a lot of cases where creative choices worked, or where judges gave crazy PCS far above what the skater(s) deserved (Tarasova/Morozov's Candyman), but it should be considered. I think Alina choosing Don Quixote was a brilliant choice - little to interpret, just lots of energy and musical cues perfect for her jumps - and probably helped get her the gold. On the other hand, I think Bradie's choice of Cinderella was holding her back on the PCS end.

Obviously USFS has made bad recommendations in the past (asking Jason to do away with Riverdance), but generally they're pretty spot on.

I don't think they should care about costume as much, as that isn't directly in the score most of the time, but they need to be conscious of costume violations. I haven't seen any in ladies, but in synchro I've seen one (skirts too long - called only at Worlds), and I've seen at least one in dance and a few more that should've been called.

Seriously? You didn't think it was insane that we had Karen, Vincent, Ashley, the Knierems, Manta & Johnson, Hochstein, and Torgashev all cycle through Moulin Rouge this season?

@Dobre I have no idea why I added that last part now. Maybe I was more thinking that they know which music suits which skater, but don't look at the bigger picture of how many skaters are skating to a given piece of music.

I think it would be fun to have a fight to the death for a warhorse.

Or, perhaps more realistically, there would be a music reservation system that works as such.
1. Skaters sign up beginning exactly one week after the end of the World Championships.
2. Skaters must indicate both which source (ie. Moulin Rouge) and which piece from that source (ie. "Roxanne").
3. Skaters can choose music from the same source, but not the same piece. (ie. if a skater uses "All I ask of You" and "Music of the Night," another skater looking to do POTO may not use either of those songs.)

And, a pipe dream:
1. All pieces of music not performed to at a previous Olympics or World Championships will receive a mandatory +1.00 creativity bonus. All pieces of music used at fewer than 5 Olympics/WCs in any discipline will receive a +0.50 creativity bonus.

With Ashley, I thought Ashley returned to MR because USFSA hated La La Land.
