Referencing the URs called on skaters at Europeans and US Nationals.....

Would the ISU consider a test competition where cameras are placed in the boards? Imagine the instant replay feature...saw this on CBS Sunday Morning this past weekend, with coverage on the SuperBowl:

Imagine the possibilities.....replays on the JumboTrons, the opportunity to have athlete/coach request a replay on an element? The producer for the TV coverage would help change the sport, moving away from the political side and move towards reviews of what actually happens on the ice, in the moment? Food for thought

1) Would be extremely expensive because it would require lots and lots and lots of cameras to cover all possible locations on the ice surface, and also if adopted would require rebuilding every single rink that holds a (world-level only?) figure skating competition once in a while.

2) The cameras would either each be stationary or would need to be remote controlled by an operator. The possible angles covered would be lower than even one camera that can be aimed and zoomed in by a human operator could achieve. And, as mentioned in the article you link, it would take much much longer after the program to decide which feed(s) to view for each element.

For an actually feasible test, how about if they just try using a second and maybe third camera at a completely different location from the one near the tech panel and hook that up to the same data replay monitor?

That is still the point...more cameras
The NFL has the cameras in the markers along the field...all easily transportable.
A friend of ours is a videographer for the NFL and he said the set up on these cameras is quick....

Watch the film clip....the technology to sync the cameras is a common technology....oh yeah, but the ISU is still in the dark ages, LOL

Persistent troubles on the 3Lz3T for Mariah, hopefully she can pull together two clean performances. Ting... rarely has practices this good and I don't want to jinx anything, but hopefully she's found her mojo after that spectacular long program at Nationals. Ting herself said that she's put the disastrous short program behind her and that she's looking forward to showcasing her newfound confidence.

Paging @Tony Wheeler - You obviously haven't read the Russian thread - on second thought probably best to avoid that - needless to say Zagitova's under-rotated jumps and the lack of calls at some competitions have been discussed all season.

I wouldn't use those three words to describe Alysa. TBH, I don't find her or her skating very interesting.

I don't think she is *especially* cute, nor articulate (wailing in the K&C is certainly not a sign of an articulate, composed person). She is certainly talented as a figure skater, but I don't know how much having the 3A at age 13 means in terms of her being more talented than peers who do not have the 3A.

As I said above, she's a junior girl.

Well, I think she is cute, and she expresses herself well in a 13-year-old young athlete fashion, which is fine. Lots of skaters can break down with relief after a highly pressurized performance when they skate well, especially young teenagers. We've seen it happen before.

Also, Liu is definitely talented. I don't like the way many people in the sport in the U.S. and in the media are obsessing over her 3-axel abilities. But that doesn't cause me to dislike her as an up-and-coming young athlete. I'm just underwhelmed by all the brouhaha, and I feel she still has a lot of work ahead of her to be able to develop to her fullest potential. I'm not sure why she particularly needs an agent at this point. But I guess that's seen as an important thing to acquire in this day and age when you achieve a bit of fame. Liu is a junior skater so I think it's somewhat putting the cart before the house horse, but oh well.

When I was taking the shuttle from the airport to my hotel in Anaheim for 4CCs, the shuttle driver asked where we were from and what brought us here. Everyone else was going to Disneyland, but I piped up that I was here for a figure skating competition at the Honda Center. The guy from who I dubbed as the honeymoon couple asked if "that young girl who just won" was going to be there. I'm guessing he saw her on Fallon's show or one of the others she appeared on because I doubt he watched U.S. Nationals on TV. But I think that's how you interest the general public - get skating in the public eye.

Well, Nike has already approached her dad for sponsorship opportunities, so apparently she does need an agent.

Good for Liu! ... i am not sure she needs an "agent" to handle 1 contract (with Nike). Her father is a lawyer. Although an immigration lawyer, he did graduate from UC Hastings, and "tort & contract laws" are mandatory courses there, with research work requirements. He can handle it, and not pay agent fees.

Wow. Ting is looking pretty strong. A good showing here will definitely set her up nicely heading into next season. She could be the dark horse of this competition. Her jumps really are impressive when she's clean. The airy quality and ease reminds me of Kaori Sakamoto or Polina Tsurskaya. She's a brilliant jumper and if she can put that on display the judges will reward her well. I could see her in the top 5 if she's clean or possibly on the podium.

After the Short at the Bavarian Open for Advanced Novice Ladies, Lindsay and Aubrey both placed 1st.

Aubrey earned positive GOE’s on all her elements and a total score of 44.94. Jumps included a 3Lz, 3T-2T, and a 2A.

Lindsay earned a 42.90 and received a “not clear edge” call on her 3F. Jumps included a 3Lz-2T, 3F, and a 2A.

Are 3-3 allowed in Advanced Novice? Lindsay competed with a 3Lz-3T and Aubrey with a 3T-3T, so I was wondering why they only opted for a 3-2.

Agreed. I've had my heart broken too many times to proclaim she's going to nail it. However, I will ponder what she might score and where she'll land in a clean skate scenario. My guess is it'd be pretty good. I'll cross my fingers, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Same here. We always heard how Gracie was killing it in practice but it rarely translated to the actual event.

Hearsay practice rarely indicates anything. For instance, if the skater is having a bad long program practice, the skater may be just fine in the short program. Also, if the skater is having a rough practice on jumps he/she is experimenting with, the skater may end up skating a good program just by leaving out the troublesome jumps. OTOH, a skater who practices mostly their favorite elements may have a hard time in competition with the less reliable elements.

The advanced novice SP jump combination requirement is "One jump combination consisting of two double jumps or one double and one triple jump."

Ting still a developing skater So for me, I don't think in terms of if she'll win or place but how she's grows from each competition. I think after nationals she's very angry that she let the pressure get to her during the SP and wants to show the world that she can nail it. However with the FS, she'll feel a lot more pressure than at nationals and have some mistakes on a few jumps. However that will prepare her well for JW, where she'll be determines to nail her SP and FS like she knows she can.

But wasn't that the problem with 2002 gold medalist Sarah Hughes? Her father, an atty, acted as her agent, and well, she didn't exactly 'cash in'. Sometimes a real agent gets things done, and not a busybody egotistical father.

Her parents really pushed the “Sarah will stay in school” route instead of cashing in, and I believe they and Robin Wagner pressured her to stay in for the next season. My impression was that everyone around her was telling Sarah what was best for her without asking for her input, including her father pulling out of her contract with COI. While she did OK at 2003 Nationals, she showed up at Worlds with obvious weight gain and frankly made a fool out of herself. And she never recovered her footing as a skater, becoming a headliner at SOI a few years later completely out of shape and unable to do even doubles. I remember friends who saw her at one of the Atlantic City Caesar’s skating events around 2010 commenting that people were shocked that she didn’t even try a single jump (meaning not even doing a single, much less a triple, while Debi Thomas came back for the first time in more than 15 years and was nailing doubles). Her parents completely stomped on her brief window to cash in on her OGM, and even her relationship with her coach was destroyed in the fallout.
