2019 Oscars Red Carpet & Ceremony - All Awards Lead To Roma

Whoa-za! The bickering in here now. Maybe you guys could be more productive by coming up with a screenplay idea (about figure skating even) and try to shop it with an agent or something.

I have a screenplay idea but it has nothing to do with figure skating. That will not stop me from expressing my opinion. ( I know you are kidding).

Actually, it's probably better time spent being more productive in focusing on one's ideas and not wasting energy on negativity (which is separate from expressing one's opinions). But the ego is pesky, and buttons are easily pushed. The vagaries of social media.

I assume your buttons get pushed too, or may be you believe you are superior to all of us?

There are many positive things that I spend my energy on, and I don’t claim to be perfect. What is so negative about me wanting to write a screenplay?

^^ Yeah, I get that about monthly cost. Everyone wants money these days to watch anything, so one has to make choices. But Netflix is not that expensive, even though they are having the nerve to go up again on their pricing.

Oh come on. You are being overly defensive. Everyone has an ego, and has buttons that get pushed. I'm certainly not exempt. But I try to take a step back and be less reactionary in my responses. Indeed, I am guilty of wasting time and energy.

And you have misread if you think I said anything about writing a screenplay being negative. Quite the opposite. Sigh...

Still too much for me, unfortunately.

And I really resent the money grab in the TV/entertainment industry these days. Cable is no longer good enough, as you've got to get Netflix and then Crave or Hulu or whatever. Though I do think I get Crave and Hulu with the cable, so they are probably not the best examples.

^^ Yep, it's the same for sports. They make it impossible to watch professional sports without having to pay gobs of money. SMH

Woke up to the news Olivia Coleman won the Oscar. Very surprised - though very happy as I really like her - as I thought Glenn Close was the sentimental as well as the odds on favourite. I suppose the fact that all academy members vote for each category makes a difference as I suspect lots of actors/actresses voted for Glenn Close.

Congrats to Rami Malek for his win- thoroughly deserved just a pity the whole Synger mess impacted BR in the best film category.

And speaking of that Green Book was a definite surprise and not a good one IMO. But as the voting there is ranked I can see how it sneaked in more's the pity.

I thought Queen should have played longer too, esp given all the promotion. :p I'm kind of surprised they didn't perform Bohemian Rhapsody, but I guess it's a hard song to sing (if you're not Freddie Mercury).

I'm guessing maybe they thought if they let Queen do more than one and a half songs they'd completely steal the show. Which they kinda did anyway, because they're Queen and it's what they do. Not surprised they didn't do BoRhap..."It goes on forever! Six bloody minutes!" Lambert does a decent job, but even in their heyday Queen never did the operatic section live.

BR is 3 for 3. Considering all the controversy, and that it wasn't really all that great, I'm stunned.

At this point in the thread it had won the only two Oscars I was really, really determined they needed to win. The sound mixing and editing in the movie was absolutely brilliant. I was surprised at the film editing award (I actually didn't think it was edited all that well). I wasn't overly hung up on best picture for it. Just for the shit-stir factor.

Not to discount Queen (I have always been a fan)but would what is going on now with movie, if Wayne’s World had not featured BR?

In my best Roger Taylor voice: "Are you joking?"

No, seriously, please tell me you're joking.

He's also very cute and he has a twin brother, Sami.

Rami and Sami? Straight people shouldn’t be allowed have children. :P

To be honest, looking at the last few Best Picture winners, it makes Moonlight's win even stranger. That ultra indie ultra low budget from an unknown director who had no history in the industry about a low-income black gay man in Miami really pulling off that win was the exception not the rule.

“Moonlight” was amazing which I guess is the exception to the rule in winning Best Picture. ;)

Yay Olivia!!! She is such an AMAZING actress and her performance is THE only reason to watch The Favourite - which I didn't like. (Pretentious overuse of fish eye lense, ridiculous rewriting of history etc). But Colman is talent through and through. I just hope she comes back to Blighty and keeps doing fab things here while enhancing her National Treasure status and ultimately joining the Damehood of Judi, Maggie and Julie rather than stupid Hollywood nonsense just for the money.

ETA: How DARE people mention her in the same sentence as Baiul and Sotnikova. Colman does NOT cheat her triples!! :drama:

;)

Green Book was my favourite movie of the recent releases. Enjoyed it more than any other movie I have seen of late (and I see a lot).

Glad Olivia Coleman won. She was excellent.

Best presentation of the awards was Melissa McCarthy. Bunnies anyone?

Oscar fashion was terrible this year. Like, so many bland dresses, so many ugly dresses (Rachel Weisz and Sarah Paulson, wht the heck was THAT?), so few great dresses (Helen Mirren is the Queen)

"Green Book" was just below "Roma" on the oddsmaker charts and on sites like Gold Derby to win. So while it was an "upset," it wasn't one of the biggest upsets ever in Oscar history.

Personally, I felt it was okay, but was basically in the same vein as "Driving Miss Daisy," which won decades ago. Been there, done that, except with a weaker script and acting this time around. I didn't *hate* the movie but it really pushed zero boundaries compared to any other film on the list.

That being said, I wasn't passionate about most of this years nominees.... :shuffle:

I rewatched Olivia Colman's speech and she was great. I adore her so much. She is so genuine and sweet.

When the camera showed Glenn Close, you could see Serena Williams was sitting two rows behind her!

I concur with Helen Mirren as best-dressed.
Some of the dresses looked better onstage than on the red carpet; and vice-versa.
The only outfits I like are Adam Driver's wife, Tina Fey, and the guy who wore the tux-gown. Glenn Close's dress was 40% too much, and my favorite horrible dresses were Maya Rudolph and Kasey Mus-something, the pale pink frou-frou disaster.

Kacey Musgrave is an amazing country singer who just won a big Grammy, I think for Album of the Year. The dress is a bit much but people paid attention!

I’m very meh about Green Book winning when the family of the black guy said the movie was far from accurate. Colman was terrific but so were Weisz and Stone, they deserved an Oscar for ensemble acting.

My favorite dresses were Michelle Yeoh, Charlize Theron who can wear the hell out of anything, and Amanda S-whatever.

Helen Mirren was compared to Dame Barbara Cartland over here in the UK on morning TV. It was just THAT pink! And if anyone doesn't know, Dame Babs was a famous author of dreadful bodice rippers and Mother to Raine, Countess Spencer aka Princess Diana's supposedly eville step mother. She also did more to kill off pink as a colour choice than just about anyone ever. It certainly wasn't meant as a compliment to Dame Helen!!!!!

While I've read that the family says the relationship between the two men is not accurate, my dad, who is African American and traveled across the U.S. in the military during that time frame, states that the "Green Book" and "sundown town" parts of it and the general attitudes were indeed accurate.

I really liked Helen Mirren's dress! She gets my best-dressed, too. I liked the color variation in the fabric, it was so vibrant. The crimped edge of the underskirt added an interesting touch too. The cut was elegant and age-appropriate, but the color and fabric felt dynamic and fresh.

I think my other favorites were Gemma Chan (she's divine) and Yalitzia Aparicio (perfect dress for her--fresh, beautiful, simple). I liked Rachel Weisz's hair look (different and youthful). Michelle Yeoh's dress was amazing except for the neckline, which was a little too plunging. Constance Wu looked great, so did Octavia Spencer. I'm not familiar with Kacey Musgreaves, but her pale pink confection was interesting, if perhaps a bit stiff-looking?

There were a lot of silver gowns, but I didn't really care for any of them--they looked too constructed, not comfortable.

You jinxed it!

Not gonna lie, after years of watching Close be absolutely stunning in Damages and that being a show that re-ignited my fire to go to law school and a show one of my sisters and I bonded over, we were both on the phone last night and came to the realization over how sad she was that she lost. Even if I agree that I think Colman was deserving, just seeing all that build up all year with Close winning Globes, Critic's Choice, SAG, and Indie Spirit awards and it looking like it was Oscar no. 1 out of 7 tries and her wearing that 40 pound gold dress...even if she's ok with losing you have to know she had to buy into some of that hype. It's really building someone up just to pull a fast one on them. It's starting to seem like a practical joke by now. Yes I know they just voted for who they wanted and it's not the Academy's fault if other groups rewarded her to build up those expectations, but my gosh did it seem cruel anyway. A lot of the reactions online are surprising to me. I didn't realize so many people wanted Close to win that award. Last night's reactions were like DiCaprio level except they feel more sorry for Close.

Also, holy crap did Henry Golding look hot last night:
