Michelle Williams was fabulous as the mother (Mitzi). Why is she not a front runner for a supporting Oscar?

Because they decided to promote her for the lead category (which is where she was nominated). I read a lot of things saying that if she was put in supporting (where most felt she belonged) she likely would have won.
