U.S. Ladies [#23]: Triple Axels? What a Novice Idea!

If you count three Russians, three Japanese. There's no Canadian women really at the moment. Carolina may be out. Maybe add in Loena. One Korean skater (not sure who, or maybe 2.) I think the odds of one USA woman finishing in the top 10 is very good.

Is it time to panic? The SP woes and UR issues continue to plague the USA ladies. I'm worried both Bradie and Mariah will fail to make top 10 at Worlds. Could drop down to only 1 spot for next year's Worlds!

Top 10 to get two spots (when there are more than 1 entrants) hasn't been a rule in at least a decade.

Two skaters have to get 28 points or fewer to earn 2 spots.

Bradie was so “on” at Autumn Classic, I thought she was going to do great on the GP. Not to be. She looks nervous and tight both here and Skate America. Is she thinking too much about the lutz/loop combo? If so, go back to lutz/toe combo, at least for the short. I honestly didn’t see all the under rotations, just the toe. And I was looking closely at all the skaters.

On the plus side, she finally got her hair and makeup right and looks tiffed. ? I like the choreography. It’s difficult and interesting. Yes, she needs more work on posture and finesse. Speed and spins are very good. She is just not in a position to make any mistakes against the Japanese or Russian skaters though.

So has there ever been a Grand Prix season (Champion’s series back in the day?) in which a U.S. woman did not medal at any event? We’re more than halfway through the series and it seems that might be the case.

Fortunately, Bradie came through today with a clutch FS performance in Grenoble to win her second bronze in 3 Grand Prix competitions.

I think between Bradie's skate in France and at the Autumn Classic and Bell's skate at NHK, things aren't looking all that bad for the U.S. ladies.

I think in a fair world, if Mariah matches their BV, then she should be able to beat them. I think her quality of skating and her programs are better and she deserves higher performance-based PCS scores.

Yeah that's what I mean. When I say match BV, I mean landing jumps on one foot, without >, unless all three skate equally bad.

I imagine with being the only US lady to win a medal at this years GP the USFSA surely now holds Bradie in higher esteem then they already did at the beginning of the season. The only way she can lose nationals is if she beats herself but of course she hasn't been perfect this season and nothing is a done deal yet so we'll just have to wait and see

Talk about weird selections that make no sense. I just looked at the Advanced Novice selections for Tallin Trophy. Those slots typically go to top Novice skaters from the current season.

Angelica Volvek got the assignment. I had no idea who she is so I googled her. A year ago at South Atlantics she got 10th as a Junenile (only top 4 move on to Sectionals). It looks like she did not skate at Regionals this year. From unseen skaters, I did see her Intermediate score from summer competitions put her in 10th in South Atlantics.

Anyone have any insight?

Ellen ?? Got a similar assignment to the Asain Open earlier in the year and that one also seemed strange. She at least competed at Sectionals the year before and had a good Novice Short at the Broadmoor in the Spring.

Courtney Hicks would have LOVED the USFSA naming a world team right after the last GP event the last few seasons

Mariah has had no doubt a fantastic season but its far from over and she's hardly the model of consistency. Let's just wait for nationals to end before we start jinxing her

She was not assigned by USFS (like the other U.S. skaters this season at Asian Open Trophy and Golden Bear).

What I especially enjoyed about Bradie today is seeing her flash a big smile at her coach and choreographer just before her FS. She looked committed and unafraid and congratulations to her for skating so well. I am annoyed though at her continued underscoring in PCS relative to some of the other skaters.

Well her inconsistency in parts this season isn't helping. Last season was her breakthrough and this one is the one that's to really establish her. Back to back solid skates and competitions are what will get them to go up.

That's why I think its best, at this point in time, to go back to the lutz-toe combo which I think has been more reliable for her. I know going for the lutz-loop makes her more competitive on paper and while its fantastic to see a US lady unafraid to go for it she hasn't been all that successful. And while its not destroying her I think its been messing with her in the head just enough. She definitely should keep practicing it and hopefully it will be ready sooner then later for competition but a successful lutz-toe with great goe will help more at this point I think

USFS would probably like to see how Chen competes first.

But I agree, they are the strongest two on paper. Seeing who gets the third spot for 4CC may be more exciting than who is named to the senior world team.

Just based on my own enjoyment I really hope the team is Bell and Tennell. I have a serious soft spot for Bradie and I believe the girl does have the right attitude for competition that I’d love to see encouraged. Only two >’s in the LP and with fully clean calls, she could have scored in the 140s which is amazing for a U.S. skater. Bell hasn’t really been clean this season but the judges are sort of rewarding her as if she had been because they give her really high PCS, and watching her skating, it’s easy to see why. She has a gorgeous SP (probably my favorite of the season) and she’s beautiful in the LP. I personally would like to see Bell go into 4CC and Worlds as National Champion because I love her skating but I think it’d take some pressure and hype off of Bradie and may give Bell the validation and boost of confidence she needs to take those competitions by storm and be the competitor we want her to be.

Just when I think Bradie has lost her competitive mojo, she proves me wrong and gets it back. She did a great job in a tough field today. Loved the lutz/loop combo....stunning! She should not risk it in the short though. If she could just stand up a little taller and not break at the waist so much it would totally class up her skating. That said, overall much better choreography and better delivery this season. She was much more tiffed and put together here. Loved the side part and side bun in the short. Hope to see more of that look. She is also very disciplined with her fitness level. Much to admire about Bradie! Here’s hoping she continues with upward progress from here on!

Not how it works. Not a single person would starve. We could easily import it for cheaper. It's pure political pork.

Now, I happen to actually think we should support small farms because of the intangibles that a living farming landscape gives. But in terms of financial logic those intangibles cost so much more tax money than the intangibles of culture.

Maybe you are suffering from malnutrition and therefore cannot think so I will spare you a detailed lesson in economics, subsidies, and strategic advantage....but the United States is the top exporter of food world wide, meaning the USA provides the most food. Which countries do you think will export food to the USA?

Has USA ladies ever failed to make top 10 at Worlds? We may have to go back to the 1930s or 1940s? This makes a great trivia question.

The last time the USA ladies did not make the top ten at Worlds was 1937 when the highest was 12th (only 1 USA entry). The worst finishes since then were 1963 (10th, 13th, 19th) and 1994 (8th, Failed to qualify).
