GP 2016-17 Pre-Announcement Thread

Each host country has to have two of the top 6 from Worlds on its roster: one from the top 3, and one from 4-6.

Traditionally, the top two seeds have each been given the two events of their choice; the third seed gets the two events not chosen by the top two seeds. So if #2 seed Ashley does want Skate Canada, SC will have Ashley whether or not she is competitive with Osmond, Daleman and Chartrand.

I don't know where that is coming from: seeds can ask their Feds to lobby for them and trade favors, but there's no official consideration for skaters' preferences. There isn't any written policy AFAIK for assigning skaters to host events, even though USFS may have patterns and agree to take skaters' choices into consideration. If Wagner wants NHK, for example, and the Japanese Fed prefers Pogorilaya, if she's available when it's time for the Japanese Fed to choose, they'll pick her.

Although it is not a written rule, my understanding is that the choices of the top two seeds (gold and silver from WC) are traditionally honored.

I know nothing about the subject, but I'm confused with the pronoun usage. Which "she" is theoretically available to become the "her" the Japanese Fed might pick?

Pogorilaya -- as in, if Wagner wants NHK, but the Japanese Federation prefers Pogo, if Pogo is available when it comes time for the Federation to choose its skaters, then they would ask Pogo over Wagner (though I believe someone has already said that, traditionally, top skaters have had their choices honoured).

A few weeks ago, I thought of spots that I'm 99.999999%-100% certain will happen:

SA: Anything is up for grabs...

SC:
Men's: Patrick Chan
Pairs: Duhamel/Radford
Ice Dance: Weaver/Poje

COC:
Ladies: Zijun Li

COR: Hardest to predict anything TBH

TEB
Ladies: Mae-Berenice Meite
Pairs: James/Cirpes
Ice Dance: Papadakis/Cizeron (Like honestly the French Federation will have to be on something to say no)

NHK:
Men's: Yuzuru Hanyu

You seem to believe that the FFSG (or, really, Didier Gailhaguet) isn't on something. That's so cute! :)

I mean I knew that they aren't the best federation due to the mess of athletes that were refused for some period of time to be released. And I've heard of the accusations of Didier.

But come on, they're the reigning WC. 2-time to be exact. France doesn't have any other TOP TOP TOP TOP ice dance team like Papadakis/Cizeron. France will be crazy to not have them.

I know that Scimeca and Knierem are not likely to be assigned to SkateAmerica due to probable seeding criteria, but I sure wish that they were

I honestly have no idea. In my opinion they should. Yes they have one more year left, but I have three VERY good reasons why they should go to seniors: 1. They've been in the junior circuit for like 4 seasons now. Enough stay, time to graduate. 2. They won ALL their events in the 2015-2016 season (Unless you count the 2nd place in the SD at the JWC), and 3. Their scores and skills show they are TOTALLY ready.

And I can see these entries happening.

8-9 days left maximum left! Single digit amount of days left until the big reveal. I swear this is one of the top 3 things that all figure skating fans look forward to the most.

And also, I think there's a strong possibility that Kevin Reynolds might end up at Skate Canada. Either by original assignment or host pick.

A Canadian skater can only be assigned to Skate Canada as a host pick. Host picks are part of the initial assignments. It's not documented, but insiders have posted that they're chosen first.

I'm pretty sure you have your two and three the wrong way around. I don't think Josh is guaranteed any this season (though I might be wrong).

My guess for SkAm is

1. Adam
2. Jason
3. TBD (Nathan/Joshua/Timothy/Ricky?)

Adam is a seeded skater, and Jason is a Chicago local who will always put bums on seats. Josh and Nathan are coming back from injury and may only get one or none and thus might need that TBD. Grant will get two on his own because he finished 10th at Worlds (top 12 are guaranteed two).

I picked Joshua b/c Im not sure he would qualify for one.

My gut tells me that both Jason (tho only required to get one) would get 2. And Grant qualifies for 2 so I think usfsa will let him get picked by other federations so he gains more international exposure

I feel Nathan's injury too severe to be back fully for October.

I dont think usfsa would want to risk Jason not getting 2 so I predict they assign him.

And thats how my mind worked all that out. lol (I actually think usfsa thought for sure Mirai would be picked up by other feds for her second assignment last season... but as skaters withdrew federations were using weird criteria for replacements.. i.e. Rodegheiro, Olson, etc)

I have a feeling this next year is going to be a Jason vs Adam year with the US men, it'll also make me really happy if they end up as the men's World team. Let's send the guys that'll get high 8's-low 9's and with great GOE :psoty:

That's not how it works. The USFS only get ONE "host pick". Adam and Jason would get assigned by the ISU (though the USFS can make their preferences known) and that would leave the host pick for Josh and Nathan.

And there's no doubt about Jason getting two.

As to the World's, from your lips to the skating gods' ears .....

Because I like their skating and because the reactions from fans who think they know better would be:watch:

That is not correct. Each host Fed gets three host picks for each discipline. They can choose any three from their country they want. While most of the time, they stick to no more than one from each Worlds group, on occasion, they pick two, and then another host picks two from a different seed group. Japan has done this several times. I don't remember if they ever took two of the top three, though.

Sometimes hosts don't use them all and return spots to the pool in initial selection. Japan, for example, has given up Pairs and Dance spots, and Gailhaguet was suspected of tossing back host spots to buy votes in the recent election. The hosts can designate at least one TBD, and sometimes they designate two, which have to be named or given back by the ernd of the summer.

The ISU doesn't assign any spots. They set the selection rules and determine who is eligible and who is guaranteed spots. After the hosts choose host spots, the hosts draw for selection order, one draw per discipline, and they draw from Worlds 1-3, 4-6, and for singles, 7-9 and 10-12, and for Pairs and Dance, 7-10, and through the groups defined -- those guaranteedone, comeback skaters, split couples, etc. If the host already has a host pick from any of the groups, they skip that round. If a host pick is guaranteed two, they are chosen for the second when their Worlds group comes up.

USFS could choose last year's Worlds team plus another man and Pair, if there's no absolute rule again taking two of the top three.
