GP 2016-17 Pre-Announcement Thread

I keep speculating about the Skate America picks, especially in pairs. It's an unclear situation in pairs because Kayne/O'Shea are national champions, but Scimeca/Knierim are clearly on top internationally. And if the fed is hoping for Alexa/Chris to qualify for GPF again, they kind of need to give them Skate America. Maybe we will see both pairs at SA, like last year. Wish there were more GP pairs slots!! I definitely want to see Castelli/Tran and Denney/Frazier each get 2 spots. And then there's Calalang/Sidhu, Aaron/Settlage, Smith/Reiss, and Pfund/Santillan ...

We know once the day comes, then "the minutes seems like hours and the hours seems like days..." (Quoting from "A Minute Without You" by Hanson)

That's not how it works. The USFS only get ONE "host pick". Adam and Jason would get assigned by the ISU (though the USFS can make their preferences known) and that would leave the host pick for Josh and Nathan.

And there's no doubt about Jason getting two.

No darling... each federation picks their own entrants

Meaning USFSA could even choose a US skater who is # 130 on the list. It is their right.

Also there was no doubt IMO that Mirai would have ended up with 2 assignments last season. After watching sketchy selection choices from Federations last year (like choosing Rodegheiro, Olson, etc etc when Mirai was first) I could easily see Jason getting just one (after the craziness of last season). Other federations trying to suppress skaters they think could medal.

Hi @kwanfan1818 .. Just read your post after I posted the one above....

I knew @misskame was not right because I have followed these GP rules as they change throughout the years... This is one thing I try and stay on top of!!!

Can't wait for the announcement!

I usually make my way to SKAM if I go to a GP, but last year the Danes were assigned Skate Canada. I think if they are again I might go to SC instead. Just hope I can still get decent tickets by then!

I would guess since Denney/Frazier train in the Chicago-land area now they might get a TBA pick if they are monitored and skating well.

Mr. and Mrs. Knierim :D and Kayne/O'Shea both were at SKAM last year, so I don't know that the USFS will have to choose, but my guess would be that they'd go with Alexa/Chris as first choice, both because of Worlds and because they won silver at SKAM last year. I'm most interested in seeing which Russian team(s) gets the nod for Skate America.

I'm also wondering if because Elena and Ruslan are now training with Shpilband if they will get a dance invite? :watch:

I'm curious about Canadian pairs and dance. Skate Canada could be epic in dance. Witnessing the federations having to show their hands a bit is always fascinating.

Yeah, if SC gets both WeaPo and Virtue/Moir plus any one of the top three at Worlds (most likely not the Shibs if they get Skate America), Skate Canada is going to be a bloodbath in dance.

I would think Skate Canada will pick Chock/Bates to go up against Weaver/Poje and Virtue/Moir

I have a feeling that NHK will choose the Shibs too.
Neither Skate Canada, nor NHK (nor the other event organizers) will get to choose anyone of the Worlds top three. In ice dance, Papadakis/Cizeron get to choose first, and then Shibutanis can choose from the remaining four events. Chock/Bates will just get what events are left.

I thought the skaters get to have their preferences known, but it's up to the Feds to ultimately make their choices, as explained by @kwanfan1818's post earlier in this thread.

I'm not sure they will. The most likely two events left would be Skate Canada & Rostelecom. But that's a cross continent hop at back to back events, which probably means someone else is going to one of them.

We'll know where everyone winds up tomorrow. We think. Even if we don't find out how they got there.

Exactly. It definitely has the potential to be a very tough dance event. Depending on the allocation of assignments, there could be a very strong team finishing 3rd at SC, which would affect chances of reaching the GPF.
