I'm very disappointed that yet again, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is getting overlooked for TV movie. I mean come on!

Keep in mind, TV Movies are joined with Miniseries/Limited Series/Anthology in the same category - that's a pretty competitive category.

Screen Actor's Guild Nominations Out:

And the Director's Guild nominations for Feature Films are out:

James Cameron surprisingly snubbed. Did they just put all the women directors (but not Sarah Polley!) in the First-Time category? Charlotte Wells and Alice Diop's films are two of the most acclaimed of the year. Also, Happening isn't Audrey Diwan's first theatrical film.
Sarah Polley directed Away from Her in 2006 so she shouldn't be in the first feature category either.

I just included her because I was talking about female directors and how it seemed they just put all the viable female director contenders in the first-time category, even when one contender is nominated for a film that wasn’t her first theatrical feature. I’m a huge fan of Away From Her, btw.

So sad news that Lisa Marie Presley has passed away.
I know this is a horrible and cynical thing to say, but I think that her passing might solidify Austin Butler as the lead of the best actor race

This is also horrible and cynical, but it’ll be a true test of how strongly and/or how “overdue” they think Colin Farrell is.

Want even more horrible and cynical? Condolences to her family and friends, of course, but...

My cold little reptile brain went straight to thinking this date will be added as another day of obligation on the Elvis and Michael Jackson Holy Days calendars.

I think it's between Colin and Austin now for the win, with this horrible news possibly just pushing Austin ahead. I think Brendan is solidly in 3rd now, with the other 2 nominees (whoever they'll be) a distant 4/5. Also, yesterday was the first day to vote on who should be nominated (runs until the 17th). The votes for winners happen the first week of March, so may not have as much of an effect there.

I'm yet to see Elvis or Banshees (or The Whale) but I want only good things for Colin Farrell so hope he's successful. I know someone who met him randomly in LA (and thought it was just some random Irish guy until they saw a movie of his on TV that evening) and said he was just completely lovely. I'm sure Austin is a wonderful person, but his continued use of the accent, a few years after filming finished, is pretty annoying to me, especially since Michael Shannon, who worked with him AFTER Elvis wrapped, said that he never heard Austin speak with the Elvis voice. So it's probably a big possibility he's doing it for some purposeful reason. I'm expecting it will miraculously gradually fade away after awards season.

So with Brendan Fraser winning the Critics Choice, it's still mainly a 3-man race. We'll have to wait to see how things pan out at the SAG and BAFTA awards, which are usually the best predictors.

Since 2010, the BAFTA has only 'predicted' best actor wrong once (they chose Chewetel Ejiofor for best actor for 12 years a Slave, but the Oscar went to Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club, who wasn't even nominated for the BAFTA that year). They also occasionally favour UK actors, which I think would lead to Colin Farrell most likely to win, which though Ireland is not part of the UK, it's the closest 'realistic' option for them.

Since 2010, the SAG has only 'predicted' best actor wrong twice (Chadwick Boseman over Anthony Hopkins in 2020, and Denzel Washington over Casey Affleck in 2016).

It will be interesting to see what those two shows do, especially if they give different results. I have to say, with the love Brendan received at the Critics Choice (it seems like everyone wanted to hug him or shake his hand as he made his way to the stage), I'm kind of predicting the SAG for him. Also, if Brendan wins the Oscar, he will be the first ever Canadian to win Best Actor at the Academy Awards! Before Ryan Gosling's 2 nominations, the last time a Canadian man had been nominated had been in 1944!

Weaker showing for Top Gun. Avatar didn't make the longlist for Director and Film, so its snubs there was to be expected, but The Fabelmans did make a few longlists but was only nominated for Screenplay. RRR was snubbed as well while All Quiet on the Western Front ties Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's record for most nominations for a foreign-language film at BAFTA.

Also, Hong Chau! I thought she was majorly snubbed for Downsizing and gave one of the best supporting performances of the past decade in that film. I still haven't seen The Whale but I'm hoping she pulls off a nomination at Oscar. Have to pull for a fellow Viet-Am girl from New Orleans. If you knew the neighborhood we grew up in, we never expect anything like this to ever happen for one of us. We really have to deviate from the path.

Though people seem to really enjoy RRR I'm not too surprised it's not nominated, because IIRC it's not even India's submission for foreign language film for the Oscars.

While I'm always happy for the films who do get it, it also kind of bugs me when a foreign language film is also nominated for best picture. If one single foreign language film is nominated for best picture, and none of the other ones are, it's a pretty safe bet that picture will win the foreign language category.

That's true about it taking away a lot of the suspense. Same with when an animated film gets into the Best Picture category. We know what will win Best Pic. Unlike the Grammys, the Oscars don't have a ton of genre categories where we can see times where a Best Album nominee loses their "genre" category. I don't think we've ever seen a film that gets nominated for both Best Picture and Best International Film lose the latter unless it's to another Best Pic nominee...has there ever been two films nominated for both categories in one year? I don't think there has been.

Interesting article about what is probably the most seemingly random surge to happen during Oscar campaigning:

And once I again I saw a picture of her, in yet another role, and did not recognize her. This woman is a chameleon. She has produced such good work and I suspect no one recognizes her when she walks down the street. I'm looking forward to seeing her in this film one day.

Some of the major reactions on Twitter are really angry. As they point out a rare year where there’s two leading black actresses in critically acclaimed roles and who made the major precursors getting bumped for one actress in a movie that was slammed by critics and audiences but had Netflix power and another from a well connected indie actress. There’s a new conversation about privilege and how someone like Riseborough can build connections to get mostly white actresses all over Hollywood to create a campaign and make a nomination happen for her when black actresses like Deadwyler will never get the opportunity to build such connections to inspire such movement. I think the actual situation is more complicated but I understand the anger.

Makes sense---but I don't like having a set number of nominees in any division. If your nomination totals might have three strong candidates who garner the most nominees...followed by four vote getters who have somewhat the same number of votes then why not have seven nominees? Or eight? Or less or more? It might blunt some of the criticism.

Overall, good nominations but I’m sympathetic to the disappointment that no Black actresses were nominated. Andrea Riseborough was truly great in To Leslie but the campaign for her left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, especially since they would never leave out a white actress for her. Disappointed especially for Danielle Deadwyler. I also would have liked to see Mia Goth from Pearl recognized but that was a long shot.

On a positive note, I’m thrilled that Paul Mescal from Aftersun got nominated. His performance was brilliant but I thought it might have been too subtle to get a nomination.

And I don’t want Riseborough to get personally blamed for anything. The truth was the people who campaigned for her did so because of her performance. They wouldn’t have done that for just any performance; it had to be an excellent one for them to go out on a limb and campaign like they did.
