U.S. Women [#2]: The Unbearable Lightness of Beijing

My only other thought is that all the ladies vying for a spot on the Olympic team better have their ducks in a row for Nationals which means injuries healed, trained as much as possible, and ready to fight for one of the team spots. No excuses.

US ranking as of now

Liu > Bell > Chen > Glenn > Thorngren - Tennell ?

Bell's results at Rosetelcom shows Tennell has a chance to make the Olympics team
she needs to compete in some B event to grease on some rusty motor skills before competing Nationals.

Tennell will not be competing internationally before Nationals. She was withdrawn last week from Golden Spin, which is the last Senior B before Nats.

Here are the current Group placements for the US Women:

Women
Group 2 -
- Alysa Liu (205.74 Cranberry; 219.24 CS Lombardia; 207.40 CS Nebelhorn; 206.53 SCI; 202.90 NHK)

Group 3 -
  • Mariah Bell (179.42 Cranberry; 190.79 IdF; 210.35 Rostelecom; CS Golden Spin)
  • Karen Chen (208.63 Worlds 2021; 173.00 CS ACI; 202.49 CS Finlandia; 183.41 SCI; 194.00 IdF)
Group 4 -
  • Amber Glenn (Cranberry; 183.46 CS Finlandia; 201.02 SkAm; 175.83 NHK)
  • Bradie Tennell* (197.81 Worlds 2021; US Classic; SkAm; GP Italia; CS Austria; CS Warsaw; CS Golden Spin)
  • Lindsay Thorngren (181.45 JGP Courchevel 1; 193.77 JGP Ljubljana; 184.40 CS Warsaw; JGPF)

Others with International Assignments
Gabriella Izzo (Cranberry; 182.76 US Classic; 155.78 CS Warsaw; CS Golden Spin)
Starr Andrews (155.25 CS ACI; 177.63 SkAm; 157.35 CS Austria; IdF)
Audrey Shin (174.73 Cranberry; 172.46 CS Lombardia; 160.78 SkAm; 169.99 CS Austria)
Sierra Venetta (159.72 Cranberry; 177.40 US Classic)
Hanna Harrell* (CS Golden Spin)

Honestly, I'd probably put Thorngren ahead of Glenn and only a bit behind Chen. Lindsay & Amber have each had one Challenger and Lindsay outscored Amber; Lindsay had 2 JGPs and Amber had 2 GPs - Lindsay's JGP scores were both higher than one of Amber's GP scores. Sure, Amber is trying the 3A but so is Lindsay and their success rate is about the same. Chen's been a bit more hit and miss but, again, their scores are pretty comparable, though Karen's PCS potential is much higher right now.

Me six! Have been rooting for Mariah for quite some time now, glad to see others in her corner too! :)
Me seven! I sat next to her parents in both the short and long at 2020 Nationals in Greensboro. Not only did she skate amazing, they seemed genuinely thrilled (and did not tell us who they were until we noticed the mom crying and asked if they knew her). Also, after her free skate, Mariah turned and looked for them and acknowledged them after she finished. I have always had a soft spot for her since! Plus, she can SKATE, which I think is so undervalued these days.

Amber can actually rotate and land the 3axel (not that the competition success rate is very good). I've yet to see that from Lindsay - all her 3axel attempts have been very short and two-footed.
Fair point. I'm not sure it means much for Amber though since she only attempts it maybe 50% of the time at any given competition and the success rate of those attempts is pretty low. Lindsay certainly has technical work to do but I appreciate that she is at least attempting them in competition. I'll be interested in hearing what folks who attend practices at the JGPF and Nationals have to say about her practice attempts - I don't think there have been a lot of practice videos of her 3A attempts on social media (but I also don't follow her).

Maybe the team will be Alysa, Mariah and Karen. Spoiler - Amber. Honestly, if Amber delivered clean performances (and to her credit, she is much cleaner and competitive the last 1-2 seasons than in the many years past), she would beat everyone

Definitely. The worst part of Adam's choreography for her is all the two foot skating. She's great at skating and there's no reason to hide it.

Bravo for Mariah!! 🤩 Her skating stood out at Cup of Russia. She looked strong and powerful and topped it off with the most beautiful and mature presentation. So so happy she has gotten her mojo back at this event. I love that she takes the time to really perform and express the music. U.S. ladies like Mariah and Karen don’t have the crazy tech of some of the other top skaters, but I love that they still bring the performance and the beautiful musical interpretation. Let’s hear it for the mature women in the sport!! :cheer2: :40beers:(I’m including Tuk….she brings the performance too….and better be in Beijing).

All I ask for from American skating is that the Women's Olympic Team consist of Bell, Chen, and Liu. That's not too much to ask, is it?
And on top of that, I want them to skate very well at the Olympics, all three of them. I don’t even care about placements. I don’t think that’s too much to ask…I wonder what I have to sacrifice to make that happen…

I'd rather that at least two of the US ladies going to Beijing could do at least 3-3 combo's and that means Alysa, Bradie along Mariah. Karen continues to underachieve and doesn't get near podiums unless the other skaters are absolute disasters.

Thorngren has 3-3 combos and the potential for ultra-Cs (3-ax tries), as well as an international look - thin flexible torso - that garners good PCS.

If Isabeau Levito were a few months older, she’d be a shoo-in for the team. She could very well win Nationals. I hope that she at least medals at the JrGP final…maybe 2nd to Akateva, who seems unbeatable on paper.

International judges under IJS seem to disagree with you ... :)
“Raf-USFS Team” must’ve done a little politicking…just sayin’. Keep those NBC ratings & the US public intere$t up in the run-up to Natls & Olympics, as she won’t be at the GP finals. 😉

If Karen's so bad then why are so many U.S. ladies having trouble hitting Karen's Worlds 2021 score? For two of them, why has it been so hard for them to hit it more than once this season so far?
