2019 Oscars Red Carpet & Ceremony - All Awards Lead To Roma

I didn’t like Moonlight at all, but I am fine with Greenbook winning (although my secret desire was for a BR win).

I'm so happy Colman won, but I am feeling sad about Close. 7 nominations and 0 wins. That's really sad especially when she wore that dress and was winning awards beforehand. I guess it's just not meant to be for some people.
Sometimes life just throws you a Colman (along with 6 others).

Overall tonight had some nice moments, but nothing very spectacular or exciting. While I'm not unhappy for Rami Malek winning, I am unhappy for Mortensen not winning in light of the film he starred in winning. That's why I guess the producer or director singled Mortensen out when Green Book won Best Picture. Mortensen looked disappointed and resigned to being the 'also-ran' in the Oscar voting.

I would have been happier to see Sam Elliott and Glenn Close winning, Spike finally winning for Best Director, and Black Panther or BlackKlansman winning for Best Picture. The Academy is meh bleh all the way. They don't really like to take chances. When there's a surprising and exciting win, it's usually an anomaly.

"If Beale Street Could Talk" wasn't nominated. Although I felt it was more deserving of a nod than "Black Panther " or "Green Book."

And picture voting is weighted, unlike all the other categories, where highest vote tallies take all. So vote splitting isn't so possible.

Yeah, none of it really makes much sense, ever. It's always a crapshoot.

I will catch up on some of my film watching, but nothing that happened on this broadcast will be inspiring people to be excited about tuning in to next year's broadcast or particularly interested in any films they weren't already planning to catch up with. It will be interesting to see this year's ratings. People might have watched to see if Black Panther would win, and they went away disappointed.

For you Oscar predictors, it seems the Golden Globe-BAFTA win combo for Best Actress is stronger than Golden Globe-SAG record. Colman won the Globe and BAFTA and Close won Globe and SAG. It was the foreign Academy members that helped push Colman to the win I think...that and The Wife just not being a strong enough vehicle to make Close undeniable.

Bummed for Glenn Close. I didn't see most of the BP nominees so I didn't really have an opinion. I figured BR and ASIB wouldn't win b/c of the backlash/prevailing opinion and I didn't have a strong feeling about any of the others, but I'm surprised about Green Book just b/c it hasn't been favored in the lead-up awards and hasn't gotten much publicity in comparison to some of the others.

And no, I didn't miss a host.

I also think Green Book being the "safest" film made it win. Nobody really hated it (unless you were black or think the movie was passe) so I can see where it got enough second place votes to win whereas Roma getting a slight favorite status made people who really disliked it rank it dead last or left it off the ballot. It was too divisive I think.

Thrilled that the movie I enjoyed the most this year actually won. Especially when I thought the one I enjoyed the least was going to. A lot of ugly dresses in attendance, just, wow.

I am sad for Glenn Close, but that speech from Colman was worth watching the whole show.

Green Book won BP?!?!   shock...

We really didn't miss a host did we?

No. Queen opening was wonderful and assume everyone knew the music - it set a great party mood. I loved having it open with music like that - but in other years there may not be something as relevant. Having Amy/Tina/Maya be the first presenters was a good idea and set the tone.
They complain about the length - maybe if they had less commercials??

Those commercials are the only reason they are so desperate to change up the show. They need sponsors to keep the award show televised.

I believe Bohemian Rhapsody might have been the favorite to win BP, but Academy members shyed away from voting for BR due to the director fallout. Green Book was seen as the safer, more old-fashioned, comfortable option vs BlackKlansman and Black Panther. It's surprising that BlackKlansman even won a writing award.

I thought her dress was gorgeous and I am also bummed that she did not win!!!

So you give no credit to the actor who made it so real on the screen?

It is like saying that M.Gandhi’s political career gave Ben Kingsley his Oscar for Gandhi.

Do you really want my opinion or do you want me to respond to get yelled at like I was earlier for expressing my opinion on the film? I decided to stop responding to Allskate and others on this subject because I could say a lot more things.

I simply pointed out the fallacy in your logic.

It seems you don’t approve if others express their opinions, but you expect that they approve yours.

I was pretty respectful of all the people loving BR and ignored them for the most part. I let them say their piece and didn't respond directly all season long. Any BR related post I made before this thread were my own thoughts and part of a discussion with other people who participated. Not direct responses to people saying how wrong they are for loving the movie. I only responded to you once because you brought up Roma needlessly in another glowing review of BR of yours went on a bashfest about it for like the 5th time. You still went ahead and reposted your negative review of Roma anyway as some sort of angry response to me and I didn't say anything. I only said my pieces in this thread as a live reaction to the wins I saw but apparently I couldn't do that because it hurt people's feelings. Keep poking at me though.

I don’t think your post is worth responding to, but I will. Your stubbornness has no limits. I have been very tolerant of you bashing BR without giving it any credit at all. When I criticized your favorite Roma, I still pointed out the good points in it.

I have no desire to continue a conversation with you.

I feel sorry for the person that has to get into kitchen with you because you are annoying

The person who once accused me of only liking Asian skaters which displays that person's racial bias as a come back because I said one mean comment about DomShabs once finds me annoying? How can I live?

So much for the Oscars being done within three hours. I actually believed it would happen, so only set the VCR to record for three hours.

But it's okay, as I enjoyed seeing Coleman win - I loved her in Broadchurch - but have no interest in BR.

As to Roma, I didn't get a chance to see it. I tried, but it was sold out on the last day it played here. Yes I did once again forget that it's usually wise to buy tickets in advance here. Even so, the theater is inconveniently located and it's really hard to find parking there. I stood in line in the rain for 20 minutes while Mr. Japanfan looked for parking.

Maybe it will come back and I will get another chance, but I sort of just feel very over Roma.

Oh,oh, exactly my point ... you are back at it...

If you feel this way strongly you should get help

Anyway, anybody paying attention to the reactions to Green Book's win? Spike Lee apparently stormed to the back of the auditorium but then turned around and spoke to Jordan Peele during the producers' speeches during the GB win with his back turned on the stage. Some people on social media are calling it the worst movie to win Best Picture since Crash. Some are saying it's a sign that old white men still run the Academy.

Did/dies anyone actually think that this is no longer the case?

Of course old white men are still running the Academy. Maybe when the current crop die off the Academy will get more female members, such changes to power structures often occur slowly.

At least a movie about menstruation won an Oscar.
