“I think that we (skaters) have two things that help us in the competition,” he said. “One is that we’ve worked with music and two is that we’ve worn a costume.
“Beyond that, I’ve felt no advantage whatsoever. I’ve never competed or danced with a partner before. I have no idea of the steps that I’m doing. You’re just being thrown into situations where you’re not elite. It’s something you don’t know and you have two weeks to learn it. It’s funny. You think you’re moving beautifully on the ice until you work with a dancer who is like, ‘What are you doing with those biscuits attached to your ankles? And those dead fish attached to your wrists?’ That’ll humble you really quick. In skating, everything is so camouflaged with speed. You take one glide forward and it’s impressive. But on the floor, you step on one foot and you’re just standing on one foot.”
