UPDATED: OMFG . . . Adam Rippon, Tonya Harding and Mirai Nagasu are on the DWTS' all-athlete cast

I understood that she pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution, or whatever the exact charge was, to avoid being charged with more serious crimes and going to trial, with the risk of a jail sentence if found guilty.

but over time Tonya almost paid the ultimate price. if you want to go through all the old interviews you find that when the press moved on the abuse didn't stop - and that continued abuse had what would be the expected consequences. By 1996 she's being treated for severe depression and stays on anti depressants until 2002. Those drugs have side effects, in her case she was told it would almost be impossible for her to get pregnant - it's why she refers to her boy as her miracle. In 2008 she airily confesses to a couple of suicide attempts. In 2009 a website publishes what they claim is her rap sheet showing an arrest for attempted suicide ( there's no detail on when the arrest happened). Just last month she did an interview for a Portland TV station and mentioned a "time when I didn't want to be here anymore".

In reality, she didn't just lose her career, she came about as close as possible to losing her life

Given that, I just want to see this episode in her life end happily. There is a pretty big downside if things go wrong

Yup. She was also running out of money for a defense.

She and her ex both lie a lot. Unfortunately for her, he is much better at it! Chances are the jury would have taken his side. I think the truth is somewhere in between. It should also be noted that he is the only person that actually profited from the crime in the end.

For the record, I know I must sound like a tonya apologist but I do think the lifetime ban from the skating association is fair. The crime involved cheating and an assault on a competitor. But the woman has literally been treated like a murderer for 25 years. I think she's paid her dues, and I only hope she doesn't get into trouble again.

This is making me disappointed that they didn't put Adam, Mirai, and Tonya on the same team for next week's Team Dance challenge lol I want to see Adam and Tonya shading each other

Your post is response to 'Tonya tried to kill someone'.

She did not, and Adam should have been corrected.

Killing someone is not the same as assaulting someone. And assaulting someone is not the same as being complicit in an assault - and it should be noted that Tonya's level of complicity in the assault (getting information about where Nancy practiced)

As to getting a second chance, I think the poster referred to in life, not skating?

Tonya definitely deserves a second chance in life. Assault does not usually merit a life sentence, but she received one - a lifetime ban.

She rec'd a lifetime ban in figureskating which she should for conspiring to physically injure the competition in order to win. Much worse than doping.

For the record, she was asked on the show because of her crime...not because she would be a great competitor. So again, she is profiting in $ for committing a crime against a competitor. It is just another storyline to DWTS. How is this a deterrent to others from doing the same thing.

Disagree - technically, she was asked to do the show because the of the recent film made about her life.

If I had committed a similar crime, I don't think an invite to a lame show like DWTS 25 years later would make all the guilt and public humilation I felt for the last 25 years seem worth it. I would rather it never happened period.

1) Tonya was asked on DWTS because there was an Australian actress that produced a mockumentary about Tonya's life that recently won an Academy Award.

2) Kristi and Nancy were on the show at a time when quite far removed from their skating careers, so it does not seem far fetched that Tonya would be invited, given their comparable talents.

Maybe Nancy :EVILLE:

ETA:

I think it is interesting that you would come up with a name like Morry Stillwell on your first day at FSU.

Get a life. :p I don't have any pseuds that I post under here. I am just old, and I used to read RSSIF back in the day!

She apparently feels no guilt....and it would be real good if she had decided it was not worth it 25yrs ago and picked up the phone and anonomously warned nancy she could be in danger.

Kristi was asked as she was a legendary skater in both singles and pairs...Nancy had a longer career than Tonya but actually may have been asked as she was the victim of said attack & was back in the news because of the I,Tonya movie.

I was not thinking any of the things you thought I was suggesting by just saying it is interesting.

Ok. Someone else suggested I was not a "new member" it in the I,Tonya thread. I assumed you thought the same. I have lurked on and off here for many years but I had never actually posted anything before recently.

{{Shrug}} and now the notorious skater :EVILLE:

I don't know. She has said in the past that she felt guilty. I'm sure she wishes that she had done what you suggest in hindsight.

It is interesting to me that her ex went from saying that she was a willing accomplice in 1994 to saying in recent years that she never would have thought of doing something like that and that he talked her into it. The movie mostly showed the "incident" from his perspective and he puts most of the blame on Shawn.

One possibility is that he and Tonya actually tried to back out of it at some point but the message never made it to Shane Stant.

Poor Nancy: Her claim to fame is being attacked. No one remembers she was a two time Olympic medalist. She has the same number and colors of Olympic medals as all time great Kwan.

I think Adam spoke of Tonya trying to kill someone because Christine Brennan keeps bringing that up to paint Tonya as an evil harpy. Apparently, one or more of the conspirators said the subject came up, and in effort to make himself look better, claimed to have nixed the idea. I think Stant said he only took the job to ensure that Nancy wouldn’t be hurt real bad, so he’s actually a hero. 🤣 These bozos were totally unbelievable and a good lawyer would haves slaughtered them on the stand could Tonya have afforded it.
