UPDATED: OMFG . . . Adam Rippon, Tonya Harding and Mirai Nagasu are on the DWTS' all-athlete cast

This was insightful:
“I think that we (skaters) have two things that help us in the competition,” he said. “One is that we’ve worked with music and two is that we’ve worn a costume.
“Beyond that, I’ve felt no advantage whatsoever. I’ve never competed or danced with a partner before. I have no idea of the steps that I’m doing. You’re just being thrown into situations where you’re not elite. It’s something you don’t know and you have two weeks to learn it. It’s funny. You think you’re moving beautifully on the ice until you work with a dancer who is like, ‘What are you doing with those biscuits attached to your ankles? And those dead fish attached to your wrists?’ That’ll humble you really quick. In skating, everything is so camouflaged with speed. You take one glide forward and it’s impressive. But on the floor, you step on one foot and you’re just standing on one foot.”

What hit me was that his and Tonya’s “revisionist history” on the attack (suddenly and conveniently it was the dead guy who planned and enacted it totally on his own) that I could believe Jeff and Tonya got together before being interviewed to concoct that BS story for the film.

The film is fiction.

Jeff refused payment for the movie?

Whatever you think of Tonya, the thought that she would still get along that well with her ex decades afterwards is....not likely...to put it mildly.

Sometimes I wonder if times stand still and people think it is still 1994 or 1995.

the lead up to the whack is Jeff's new version of what happened. I agree it's bullshit

and yes Steven Rogers has said that Jeff refused to be paid (Tonya has so far been paid $1,500)

We’d be happy to let it go if Tonya would own up to what really happened and do the same. Not version 3, 4, 5, ad nauseum every time she can get back in the public eye.

If Tonya got only $1500 for her life rights, Gillooly would have been paid chicken scratch anyway just for his interview. I doubt he’ll see any “back end” commission either, as it’s not his life rights that were obtained.

Said 100,000 times over, and it has nothing to do with the fact that you still assume people who hung out 25 years ago still hang out and collaborate together. Like mentioned, this isn't 1995 any more and TOnya married someone else.

She is annoying as heck, I am sure, but human nature (like people going their separate ways) applies to everyone, even to whom you consider liars and losers.

I am shocked that Tonya is 47--I would have guessed 10 years older. Early marriage and hard living, I guess.

Do we know the dance order for tonight? I'm only interested in the skaters and the hot football player. :grope:

I watch any movie about skating - even the cheesy Hallmark channel ones. Blech. After I watched the I,Tonya movie, I read a couple of online interviews with the screenwriter. It made me realize that Jeff is a great con artist! He fools the interviewer every time. He did the same thing with some online interview a few years ago after the 30 for 30 thing came out. That it was prompted me to do a little research into the evidence etc. all these years later.

I found this quote especially hilarious because Jeff did paid interviews bashing his ex at least up to 2000!

What’s curious about Jeff is that he refused to take any money for life rights, for his interview, for anything. He didn’t want to profit from it. He said that he thought of calling in the death threat on Nancy, which is what he says happened, and Tonya never would have thought of it. It ruined her career and he didn’t want to profit from it. To this day, he hasn’t received a penny. And that’s not how he was perceived in the media.

So, Nancy really didn’t get whacked?

I wouldn't know from WATCHING A MOCKUMENTARY.

... For the record, I also do not believe the material from Ancient Aliens despite it being on the History Channel.

His latest wife is a nurse. Probably making upwards of $45 an hour. He can leach off her now and doesn't need Tonya anymore.

(((Japanfan))) Not that I disagree with you but anything that puts Nagasu in a negative light might as well be suicide on FSU :shuffle:

I don’t think it’s that her voice is squeaky sounding or high pitch , I think it’s the “valley girl” aspect that is kind of strange because she is 24 and she sounds 10. I just really find her off ice personality a turn off. It’s ditzy for her age.

What impressed me most about Rippon in his first dance was how neat his feet were for a newbie.

That's why I'll never forgive them for choosing Country Barbie over Zendaya: her feet were lovely.

I wonder if Rippon follows The Biscuit Ballerina.

Lifetime ban is just punishment. She also should not have been allowed to receive money for the movie and DWTS.

Um, who should have stopped her and on what basis? Her complicity in the assault against Nancy happened almost 25 years ago and she was punished for it. That punishment did not include being prohibited from earning any money related to her skating career in future, although she was not allowed to perform in shows.

Tonya is a free American citizen and entitled to participate in the marketplace to earn income. There is no reason why she should not compete in DWTS.

If you have an issue with DWTS giving her the opportunity, take it up with them. You can be sure they did it to serve their own purposes (ratings), not out of any sympathy for Tonya or desire to give her another chance.

Also, I don't think she got much money for selling producer of "I, Tonya" the rights to her life story. IIRC she got $1500.

There were some perks like attending the Golden Globes, but SFAIK none of the movie's proceeds go to Tonya. One might argue that she should have insisted that she get a share in the proceeds, especially in light of how successful it has been.

So you've got film producers and actors who are making money off of Tonya's story - much more than the measly $1500. Tonya received. Arguably, Tonya has been exploited.

I heard Tonya does get a piece of the profits from I, Tonya. How much and how far it extends, e.g., dvd, Netflix, international sales, etc., I don’t know.

....... although she was not allowed to perform in shows.........

Not true. All the ban did was prevent her from skating in USFS sanctioned events (meaning US Nationals and any pro-am that was sanctioned). It did NOT block or prevent her from skating in professional shows or any of those 11tybillion made-for-TV pro competitions that saturated TV during the mid to late 90s. She could have skated in any number of pro-only events or shows here in the US or anywhere in the world. The ban could not and did not prevent her from doing so.

Did she skate in any of those?

I rather doubt she'd have received an invite, even if she was technically permitted to skate.

I don't recall her skating on anything but public ice subsequent to the incident. That's presumably why she had to try out boxing and other ways to earn income.

Tonya skated in 98 Breaking the Ice (on a separate rink because the other skaters refused to share the ice with her), 99 espn pros, a hockey game in 97, and 3 or 4 appearances on the Today show. She then did celebrity boxing in 2002, and tried real boxing with mediocre results (3-3 record) from 2002-2004. She had to give up boxing due to her asthma but she did do a few celebrity bouts before landing the hosting gig on World's Dumbest with former child stars Leif Garrett, Danny Bonaduce, and Todd Bridges which she did for several years. She also acted in a couple of movies (breakaway, a boxing related movie that I forget the name of ), and guest starred on an episode of Arli$$ plus the numerous documentaries. There were also a few appearances on Inside Edition and Entertainment Tonight (et sent her and some friends to Disneyland once).

She got $1,500 initially and was supposed to get more if the film got made. It did, and I think she gets a very small % of the profits. The movie did better than expected. She gets to dance next week too. Redneck Woman was the perfect song (she should of been scored higher than Arike ). At least, they sent the correct 2 home this time-Arike and Kareem. 3 get eliminated next week, and nfl players have a huge fan base so I think Josh Norman will be in the finals with 2 skaters.
I enjoyed Tonya's quickstep more than Adam's.

Tonya was on an episode of The Weakest Link too. And IIRC, she hosted “Bad Girl’s Week” for a cable network (Spike?) She’s done numerous radio spots as well.

I, too thought her quickstep was better than Adam’s. Excepting for the stupid bear.

It was Spike. She also did a commercial on fox sports net playing a grocery cashier- the guy tried to sneak an extra item in the express lane and got it thrown back at him. She was on Larry King Live a few times as well.

I liked the bear. He brought back memories of Captain Kangaroo's dancing bear.

For her son's sake I hope it's true. It's wrong that she's been prevented, at least in the past, from making a decent living. She paid for the crime she was charged for. The past is gone. Nancy seems to have moved on and even had some kind things to say, especially regarding Tonya's child in that one t.v. interview she did a few months ago. People really need to let so much anger and hatred go. It happened to Nancy and she's had the grace to move on. Others should too.
