I loved Arrival. One of my favorite movies. I thought Amy Adams was amazing in it and should've been nominated. She's overdue.

While I thought that Arrival was the best picture, I can't be too upset that Moonlight won (at least it wasn't La La Land) but Arrival was amazing, and it should have at least won best adapted screenplay. It's on my list of the top ten favorite movies ever.

Thank goodness Glenn Close is still getting respect in some "Best" lists and nominations.

If she is nominated at the US Academy Awards this year, it will be her SEVENTH nomination (4 Best Actress, 3 Best Supporting Actress) - which would tie her with Richard Burton among actors for most nominations without winning a competitive Oscar or receiving an honorary Oscar (Peter O'Toole was nominated 8 times without winning but received an honorary Oscar).

If Close fails to win one this year, they should really think about giving her an honorary award within the next decade.

I was about to post about that film.
I'm still upset that Judy Garland didn't win for her performance.

Agreed. MGM's and Jack and Harry Warner's revenge. Grace Kelly had done 3 pictures ("The Country Girl", "The Bridges at Toko-Ri and "Rear Window") produced for or released by Paramount Pictures, "Dial M for Murder" for Warner Bros. and "Green Fire" for her home studio MGM during 1954. She was the popular new actress in town (besides Audrey Hepburn, who had already won for "Roman Holiday") and had 3 major studios behind her politically for that awards year.

"A Star Is Born" was an independent production funded by Warner Bros., and Jack and Harry Warner ended up sabotaging the original, brilliant 3-hour original release cut by chopping over half an hour from it in order to get more showings per day in theaters.

I believe that the restored version has been shown on Turner Classic Movies.

I think you'll enjoy this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDBXKP6L9iY

@aftershocks introduced me to this video series analyzing various Oscar races. I like how fair the narrator is while still presenting factors that could have played into certain Oscar wins. She does this without bashing any performances or ever saying an award was ever undeserved...outright. At least she hasn't in any of the videos I've seen.

So while I would like to state that I do absolutely believe Judy Garland should have won for A Star is Born over Grace Kelly.

I do think if Grace Kelly should have been nominated and won for anything it should have been Dial M For Murder. The Country Girl isn't very good and while she's fine in what I recall is a pretty thankless role (also the movie watches like it was designed as another shot at an Oscar for Bing Crosby IIRC), she's excellent in Dial M For Murder.

That said, while I haven't dug into it much, the lack of Oscar love for Hitchcock's work and the only acting Oscar for one of his movies being won by Joan Fontaine for Suspicion (a win that has been argued was because she didn't win for Rebecca the year before, but since I've only seen one of those movies I have no actual opinion on that), indicates that Grace Kelly wouldn't have been nominated for Dial M For Murder anyway.

Not Hitchcock (though he was a Hitchcock fave), but makes me think of Jimmy Stewart and his win for "The Philadelphia Story":

Per Wikipedia...
Stewart was not expecting to win, and was not planning to attend the awards ceremony. He was called and "advised" to show up in a dinner jacket. Stewart himself said he had voted for Henry Fonda or his performance in "The Grapes of Wrath", and always felt the award had been given to him as compensation for not winning the Academy Award for his portrayal of Jefferson Smith in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" the previous year.

Yeah and I've noticed frequently the last few years where you'll see a narrative form around a particular actor/actress over their role really fast because they haven't won yet. Julianne Moore comes to mind for Still Alice. I was sort of expecting that to happen with Glenn Close but other movies came out and things changed.

The "Stewart was just being compensated" theory is a popular one because he had SO deserved to win the year before. (I still give Robert Donat the side-eye whenever I see him in anything, even though it really wasn't his fault.) But it's not so crazy to think that he won for actually doing some very good work in TPS. He was brilliant in his drunk scene with Cary Grant (and by all accounts, some of it was ad-libbed!).

"C.K. Dexter Haven! Oh, C.K. Dexter Haven!"

Cary Grant is another candidate where IMO the Academy just didn't get what he was even doing. Many of his performances have aged very well because they're restrained and non-showy and his work in comedies and Hitchcock movies in particular is brilliant. But not enough "Look, Ma, I'm acting" moments, I think.

I am surprised by Daniel K.'s nominations. He had a pretty minor role in Widows. He was menacing in it but I didnt feel it deserved a nomination for a supporting actor.president i would have picked Chris Hemsworth ( sp?) in the 'Bad times at El....' movie.

He should have won for Penny Serenade. He was good in a lot of movies but he was another level of amazing in that one.

Saw the new Mary Poppins movie tonight. Rather frenetic, but sweet, and the songs are charming. I may actually some of the fifty thousand rhythm dances that will use them. :)

Too late to correct the weird wording - ‘President ‘- obviously inserted by autocorrect.

I saw The Favourite last weekend. Odd movie but Olivia Colman was absolutely fantastic. Definite Oscar nom and a win wouldn't surprise me.

The Palm Springs Film Festival Awards Gala just happened last night, and though I haven't seen it all, a huge highlight was Rami Malek's speech when he accepted the breakthrough performance award for his work on Bohemian Rhapsody. It may have boosted his Oscar chances, since not only was his speech excellent and genuine, but there were a lot of voting Academy members in the audience too...

He seemed genuinely grateful (and almost a bit choked up at the very end) and made sure to acknowledge that it was a team effort and to thank everyone from his dance/movement coach, makeup artist and costume designer, to the production team and cast (where he confirmed his relationship wth Lucy Boynton who played Freddie's fiance Mary in the film).
His acknowledgement of all that Freddie Mercury did and stood for was absolutely spectacular.
“I’m here because there's an immigrant man who took it upon himself to push himself in the most extraordinary way - he's bisexual, gay, moved from Zanzibar to London, was a fish out of water, and somehow stepped on stage and told everyone they could be exactly who they wanted to be. They could be audacious. They could be bold. They could be irreverent. They could be inclusive, and authentic, and their best selves. He's allowed me to feel that way. He allows all of us to feel that way. This is because of, and for, Freddie Mercury."
Rami's introduction by Christian Slater (costar on Mr. Robot), and his acceptance speech, start at about 43:00 in the livestream.

The last of the critics groups made their announcement. The National Society of Film Critics consists of 60 members include critics from major papers in Los Angeles, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago and Washington, D.C. Its members also include the critics not just of Time, Newsweek and The New Yorker, but also of Slate, Variety and The Wall Street Journal. Second, membership is by election.

The Society represents movie criticism in the United States by supplying the official critic delegate to the National Film Preservation Board of the Library of Congress and abroad as the official American representative to FIPRESCI, the international federation of members of the film press.

Besides responding to specific issues, such as colorization, film preservation, or the ratings system, the Society regularly meets early in January to vote on the Society’s awards for the finest film achievements of the year.

The number besides each film are the number of points a film received. Voting is conducted via a weighted ballot system. On the first ballot, members vote for their top three choices (first choice = 3 points, second choice = 2 points, third choice = 1 point). The nominee that receives the most points and appears on a majority of ballots wins. If no winner is declared on the first ballot, the category goes to a second ballot, this time without the proxies (voters who did not show up in person in New York or remotely in L.A. There were 13 critics voting by proxy while 20 were in person in New York and 9 voted remotely in L.A.). Voting continues with as many rounds as needed until a nominee achieves a point plurality and a ballot majority.

The opening is awful and Sandra Oh is really annoying. They are both annoying,

I am switching to 60 minutes. They have AOC- much more interesting

It started blah, but I liked the Lady Gaga joke and the Crazy Rich Asians joke bringing up white casting of Asian people with Emma Stone screaming "I'm sorry!"
