She's not going to put the 4Lz that late in the program. If she's adding quads, they'd go near the beginning, like Trusova does.

Oh, I apologize. By layout, I meant just possible jumps. They are not in order of how she would execute them.

As long as she does a 7 triple program, we’re good. If she does a program like that and nails it consistently, she could really rake in good GOE’s and PCS. Plus, when her jumps are on, they’re really beautiful.

Can't Alysa's sp layout be a 3A/3t, 2A and 3lo? I believe the 2A and 3Lo cannot be repeated in combo, but the 3A is allowed.

That would be legal, for either junior or senior events (when the loop is the required junior solo jump).

It is not allowed to repeat the same jump in two different elements in a short program.

It is allowed to include two different jumps with the same takeoff but different number of revolutions.

Also in the junior ladies' short program the solo axel is required to be double. But the jump combination just requires "Double/Double, Double/Triple or Triple/Triple May not repeat Double Axel or solo jump performed." A triple axel and a double or triple toe loop would meet those requirements.
 
But if the double axel can't be repeated, it would be very risky to use a triple Axel for the combination in case something happened and she ended up doubling it or being credited with just a double.

In the 1990s, it was very common for senior men to plan solo 2A (required) and 3A in combination. Rarely someone might double the planned 3A and then they either had to do a good job of switching to a backup plan or else they lost at least one whole element.

Similarly, it would be risky for a junior skater to plan something like 2A, 3Lo, and 3S+2Lo. If they doubled the solo loop it would still be legal in the junior short, but that would make the second 2Lo not count.

Or for a senior man to plan a solo 4T and a 3T in the combination.

I.e., it's legal to plan different jumps with the same takeoff and different rotations in a short program, as long as the number of revolutions in each is allowed by the rules for that level and discipline. But it's risky if the skater can't ensure always rotating the planned number of revolutions.

I’ve heard that skaters such as Ting should have more of a kneebend to help land the jumps more consistently. However, I’ve also heard that a deep kneebend is not only aesthetically unpleasant, but is not the most sufficient technique either. So, what is a good knee bend technique?

Skaters like Elizabet land with their legs straight and with barely any kneebend, but somehow always land their jumps. Skaters like Ting land with a little kneebend, but struggle with landing the jumps.

I mean, you don’t want to be bending like Shoma Uno on your landings. But good knee bend on jump landings makes them more beautiful and aesthetically pleasing and also generally positively affects flow & speed out of the jumps. Think Kaori Sakamoto or Kaitlyn Osmond. The fact that Tursy and many of the Russian girls have little knee bend on their jump landings (and not coincidentally, not much runout) is one reason why I’m not a big fan of their jump technique. As to the relationship of knee bend to consistency on jumps, I haven’t looked at that enough to comment.

She’s 11 now and is learning the 3Lz-3Lo. She’s moving up to Juniors next season. Hopefully she improves her spins, steps, and skating skills.

Additional background on Mia Kalin: She placed 7th in Juvenile Girls at 2018 Pacific Coast Sectionals in November 2017 and won the Intermediate Ladies combined event final round at the 2018 Broadmoor Open club comp. last June (IIRC, afterwards she was invited to attend USFS' Athlete High Performance Development Pool/ISP Camp in Colorado Springs). Kalin tested up to Novice and was invited to compete in the U.S. Novice & Junior Challenge Skate in mid-September in Salt Lake City where she placed 11th of 17. At the competitive Central Pacific Regional Novice Ladies event last October, she finished 3rd overall (4th in SP, 1st in FS) to advance to Pacific Coast Sectionals.

Hopefully she makes it to Nationals as a Junior come next season. It’s so frustrating that skaters who do well early on in the season, but not so well later on or skaters who falter in one program rarely make it to Nationals. Isn’t there a new way to qualify for Nationals next season?

Oh wow you're right, there was something very Russian about that. That was also a mature and somewhat surprising music choice that didn't manage to overpower her -- I'm impressed.
 
I really hope they work on her program components and spins. She would've made it to Nationals had she not lost levels on her spins.
