U.S. Ladies [#20]: In a Week, Maybe Two, They'll Make You a Star

I'm going to go back and watch it again, but upon first viewing, I have to say that I found LLL, a bit too one note performance-wise for Ashley (not her fault, I just don't think the music gave her much to work with). She seemed to sort of just smile through the whole thing and while there is nothing wrong with that, I suspect that's not the best way to for a skater whose greatest strength is considered to be her ability to perform to showcase herself. I could be wrong on this, but I wonder if her original impulse to ditch the program came from recognizing that this piece did not foreground her strengths in the same way MR did, and having so little time, just decided to put MR up again.

Sometimes, it feels like there are people in this forum who would knock off another skater just so their favorite could make the team.
And I sincerely hope nothing happens to Karen Chen between now and the Games - because we know who the instant suspect would be! :)

Relax, guys. I didn't say Ashley was going to knock Karen out. Only that if Karen gets the flu or slips on the ice or something, there are those who will blame Ashley. There was already some speculation (here?) that someone would get a mysterious case of food poisoning before the competition.

She was awarded a medal. I hope she didn't do a Slutskaya and toss it in the trash.
Slutskaya never tossed it in the trash, it is a nasty rumor spread back in Torino for whatever reason.. When she came into the dressing room after the medal ceremony, and started to change her clothes, she tossed it into the locker-box, instead of gently taking off, i guess..... It's her medal, she was out of public eye, and can do whatever she wants his her medal....She acted just fine on the podium and in public.

Just for the record, Vagabond..... what ever hate and rumors you Americans are going to put out against us Russians, you will get it back 10-fold.... we are better and meaner.... :D

... she forgot Karen is a quiet assassin.

IMO, it's too much of a coincidence for Karen not to have copped that moniker either directly or indirectly as a result of the thread or gossip about the thread I started sometime back re Wu-Tang name generator aliases. It's Maia Shibutani who is the Quiet Assassin. Karen may not have liked the name that actually comes up for her on the Wu-Tang mess.be website. ;) I don't blame her.

In any case, if you go there and don't like the name that comes up, you can put in your full name or a nickname and see whether something you like better will generate. Or, you can grab any moniker you prefer and make it your own, like Karen apparently did.

BTW, Ashley Wagner is Tha Ambassador, which seems to have been eerily accurate at points during her career, but no longer. Or maybe it's still so in the sense of her ability to fashion her own skating career and now to transition toward something else she finds fulfilling.

Wow, great interview. It is really too bad there is no mechanism where Ashley could get honest feedback on why her PCS were where they were. I don’t disagree with the judges, but I have been in the spot with my skater where scores simply make no sense and it would be great to be able to find out why without being seen as complaining or assuming the judges are wrong. Just feedback to help with the future.

I can understand Ashley wanting to be honest. I just don't like the fact that it seemed the lion's share of the media attention went to her being "furious" vs shining on the ladies who made the Olympic team. I still hold that only one person prevented Ashley from being on that team, and it was Ashley herself. One triple salchow, or double salchow and cleanly landed lutz or better spin away...

And I also honestly think the person she's the most angry at is herself. In her head and heart, she likely knows she blew it.

It is true that Ashley held herself back by missing that jump. I won't dispute that. And I do think she's absolutely furious at herself, not the judges. I'm sure not having a clear, transparent explanation on the PCS annoyed her, but ultimately I know she knows she has no one to blame but herself for her result. She's been in this business long enough to know that the combo she popped was the difference.

It's not Ashley's fault she got more attention than the other ladies. She did what she usually does - says what's on her mind - and what was on her mind made a much juicier headline than anything the ladies selected for the team said. Let's be honest, while Mirai was candid in her AmA, in all USFSA promo stuff she's been just as wholesome and politically correct as the other two ladies that made the team. And wholesome/politically correct doesn't make headlines these days. Besides, those three will get plenty of media attention once the Olympics come around.

She said she was training for an upcoming competition, so that must mean she plans to compete at Four CC. I also think it highly likely she will go to Worlds.

Honestly, I think it would be awesome if Ashley competed for Germany (her place of birth) for a few years. She is very popular in Europe and she could most likely extend her money making career for a few more years outside of the USA.

I think she just didn't have enough time with it. It was nice to see another side of Ashley. It reminds me a little of her Somewhere in Time program from way back when. I hope she does do 4CCs so we can see it again.

Ashley was born on a US military base in Heidelberg where her American-born father was stationed. That does not confer German citizenship, although I believe she speaks German.

Do you by any chance know WHY it is highly likely for Wagner to go to the Worlds?

 Is she a dual citizen? Is she even eligible for German citizenship? The U.S. is one of very few countries that has birthright citizenship. I was under the impression that most European countries require you to have at least one citizen parent.

Unless one of her parents or grandparents actually had German citizenship that could be passed to her she is not a German citizen. Only recently was I eligible for German citizenship because for the longest time it could only be inherited from the father. Now you can get it if either of your parents had it at the time of your birth. I'm not sure if the Germans will trace the citizenship back to grandparents or older generations from the war.

Why? Because as has been stated by many on this board, the international judges are not that positive toward Nagasu or Chen. I would imaging that when one or both of them go splat at the Olympics, the USFSA will come crawling back to Ashley to turn in a solid skate at Worlds to retain the three world team spots. It is highly unlikely that Bell or Wang could turn in the needed solid performance.

You are actually incorrect. How do I know? My sons were both born while I was stationed in Germany in the Army. They have duel citizenship until the age of 23 when they have to choose. So I was also incorrect in my post in that Ashley is too old to make the switch (although I doubt Germany would make it that hard on her).

When were they born? They changed the citizenship laws fairly recently (at least recent for me) because for the longest time the children of Turkish workers did not have citizenship.

This only applies to children born after Feb 2 1990- see bottom. I was born earlier and had to inherit citizenship by proving that I inherited it through "blood".

Ashley was born after this date so maybe she has dual citizenship.

German citizenship by Birth
If you do not have German parents, but are born within the borders of Germany, you qualify for citizenship by birth or by right of soil. This is also the Jus Soli citizenship. You can get this type of citizenship on the following conditions:

  • If at least one of your parents has lived in Germany for at least 8 years before the birth of the child
  • If at the time the child is born, one of the parents had a permanent residence permit
In getting this type of citizenship, the child will again have to choose the citizenship of the parents or the citizenship of Germany between the ages of 18 and 23 years old. The child must give up the nationalities of the parents in order to get the German one, or apply for dual citizenship.

Only children born after February 2nd, 1990, have the right to get this type of citizenship.
