An insightful article about Mariah Bell two days after 4CC: http://figureskatersonline.com/news/...st-my-passion/

Some key things to note:
- Plans to skate for another four years at a MINIMUM
- Raf told her that after this season, they may start adding new jumps/combos
- Very disappointed in herself with her Long at 4CC, but says that after resting for a bit and going back to training, she’s ready for Worlds
- She’s indifferent about the “age factor” in figure skating and thinks that as long as you keep your body and mind healthy, you can skate for as long as you want
- Looks up to Carolina Kostner
- Thinks Raf is a “big teddy bear” on the inside

Maybe we should start calling Mariah the “young soul” because that truly describes her and regardless of her placement, the strides she’s made this year are amazing. Her performances are captivating and it’s only a matter of time before the PCS start to fly in. I truly hope for a Top 6 placement at Worlds for her. Good luck Mariah.

... there is an old Armenian joke (from soviet times):

Little Armen comes home from school: mama! papa! good news! in our sports class the coach took us to a construction site, to see a new swimming pool. he said "when you learn to swim and not drown, we'll fill it with water".

Well we certainly have examples of skaters who come into their own at an older age...(as if 20 something is old ) Mirai, Adam etc..
As long as Mariah is committed to improving and keeps healthy, her odds of improving are a lot higher. To me, the first step would be to start skating clean consistently.

I adore Mariah Bell... I do hope that she does well....

Many skaters add technical content later in their careers; as previously mentioned Mirai Nagasu, Ashley Wagner, even natural jumpers like Irina Slutskaya found layouts that worked for them.

I know Mariah previously landed 2A+1Lo+3S, but was also toying with 3F+1Lo+3S (probably so she could repeat the 3F instead of say, a 3T).

Maybe next season we'll see something like:

3Lz+3T
3F
3Lo
2A+1Lo+3S
3Lz
3F+2T
2A

That way she can repeat the most difficult triples outside the Axel (ala Zagitova). They're also pretty consistent for her as well and on par with Tennell.

Just saw an announcement on IG (NBC Olympics) that Gracie Gold will be interviewed on the Today Show tomorrow morning. No mention of what time.

No signs of Gracie. Been watching since 7am...no mention...no teaser.

Article about Alysa Liu (and the challenges that child prodigy athletes face):
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2019/feb/19/alysa-liu-figure-skating-young-athletes-sport

This quote from the article stood out to me: "It’s no surprise then that Liu has had multiple hip surgeries."

There is a discrepancy here. If you go to that Guardian article and follow the link where it mentions "multiple hip surgeries," the source article for that comment actually states that Liu "has had multiple hip injuries."

There's obviously a difference between surgeries and injuries. But, the fact that she's already had multiple incidents of either, at just 13, is definitely concerning IMO.

You are right. The quote from the source article is: "Injuries are the bane of elite figure skaters, and Alysa has taken stitches in her knees and has had multiple hip injuries."

It doesn’t seem to have aired. I thought I heard one teaser early on. I wonder what happened. Maybe since it was pretaped it was bumped to tomorrow? Hopefully they post something about it.

Since the article is about how young athletes can be pushed too hard by their parents and/or their federations, I would have liked to have heard Alysa's thoughts on that issue, rather than having her dad and her coach assuring us that she is not being pushed.

6 and 8 are at least alive LOL! It is weird though that today's top US skaters see her and Tara etc...as skaters before their time. It is kind of freaking me out!

Savanna Guthrie is out sick again, so it probably won’t air today. No mention of Gracie at the top of the hour. Offices back open today, so I’m dependent on tapes or reports. Bye!

The Gracie thing for her to be on Thursday morning was mentioned on NBC Wednesday night, perhaps after The Evening News.

But you're right, Savannah is out sick for the second day.

Back on NBC News tonight, Savannah was substituting for Lester Holt.

And they did announce that Gracie will be on with Savannah tomorrow, Friday, morning.
