U.S. Ladies [#23]: Triple Axels? What a Novice Idea!

Gracie hasn't said much lately. I would assume she is about to get on the plane to get there in time to adjust to 8 hour time change and go to official practices. I am an optimist. Lets hope all is well and she does what she set out to do.

Why are people doubting Gracie will show up and compete both phases at Rostelecom Cup? There hasn't really been any news one way or the other for Gracie. Why not just assume she's going to show up? I mean she may not be in the optimal competitive shape or she may be in great shape. Maybe she'll perform respectably. Even if she doesn't, she won't be the first nor the last ladies skater to go to a GP and not do well. As disappointing as it would be, in the long-term, it's no big deal if she ends up not placing well. Just another step on the road back to competitive skating. I think the fact that she'll keep fighting through a performance while still managing to get back into the groove of competition may be a great thing as it will manage all of our and her expectations and make it ok for someone like Gracie to some times place lower. I mean even Med placed like 7th in the SP at GP. Champions fight and one doesn't need to be a constant winner to be a champion.

I think most skaters will only plan to arrive at the competition venue when the host federation will have accommodations for them, which is probably beginning the day before practices start.

If they're worried about jet lag and have the money and energy to arrange a place to stay and a place to practice before that, they might do so. E.g., if a coach has a connection with a nearby rink. But I don't think that's very common, especially for GP events. More common for Olympics, especially for ladies who want to participate in the Opening Ceremony and then have a week or more to kill before their competition.

About a decade ago I saw something in the Athletes section of the US Figure Skating site advising athletes to gradually adjust their sleep schedule at home toward the competition time zone beginning a week or two before the event. I don't know if that document is still there.

I don't think I saw this one posted yet: feature article on Pooja Kalyan, Is she the next Michelle Kwan or Thomas Edison?

In the search for a star to break an Olympic medal drought for American women’s singles figure skaters that has stretched more than a decade, Pooja Kalyan does not fit the typical mold. First off, she holds two patents for innovative consumer products. And her home might be the last place you’d look for skating talent: Arkansas . . .

“Pooja is such a well-rounded individual, it just gives her perspective,” says Dillon. “Sometimes when athletes are too narrow-minded and too focused on one singular goal they have a very difficult time achieving great success in that one goal. I think she’s been able to really have different areas in her life where she’s trying to be successful.”

Totally possible, and we will see where the 12 skaters who get through sectionals are at this week also, as well as Gracie. The biggest question mark after this week will be Karen Chen, assuming Mirai and Ashley are definitely out for this year?

As posted in her fan thread, Mirai spoke at Northwestern University in Chicago over the weekend - here's an article from their paper: https://dailynorthwestern.com/2018/...tbacks-and-landing-that-historic-triple-axel/

"I'd like to think I have one or two competitions left in me," @mirai_nagasu, currently on a break from skating, said.

^^^ yeah, Their Dance selection was a joke. I had to google 2 teams to even see who they were.

:D bull xxxx! Chock and Bates were invited and they are ahead of all current Russian dance teams in results and standings... but oh well, they withdrew. And one has to google several teams in each event, since some invitees are new and less known. I had to google 4 dance teams in Skate America... and it was obvious that H/D and M/C are going to be 1 and 2..

Besides P/C and H/D the other several "good teams" is a wild shot in this new season.. and the rest are not in medal contention. Removing "russia hate glasses" helps to see the truth..:p

Also pairs.
Its like they are sooooooo worried to get their teams medals that they dig way (I mean wayy) down the list to complete their rosters.
There is nowhere to dig down in pairs... Top 3 withdrew from this season, and the only competition for 2 top Russian teams is J/C.. Too bad US teams don't give much to dig into.. :D

And i am very offended on behalf of Nicole DELLA MONICA / Matteo GUARISE that you consider them a "way down" team.. They have been winning medals, just check..

How far ahead should someone arrive to adjust to an 8 hour time change? I thought she would have left this weekend to give her enough time.

Generally skaters arrive two days before the short. For example, if the short is on Thursday they arrive on Tuesday afternoon, practice Wednesday, short program practice Thursday, short program Thursday, LP practice Friday, LP Friday. Now in Europe, European skaters often skip the first general practice (the Wednesday one in the example above) because there is no jet lag and they would rather train at home.

Can you two please continue your off-topic GP discussion elsewhere? Thanks.
Noted. Yet the request should be addressed to @AngieNikodinovLove, who used the US Ladies topic to take a dig at Russian GP selection roster. The assumption that if "an american takes a dig at russia" its not big deal and should go unnoticed because there are more americans on this site" is not the right approach.

Does she keep her bye to Nationals if she does the SP and then withdraws?

Not sure, but I can’t imagine the USFSA would be too happy if she did that. I also think it’s better for her to start getting the program out theee particularly if she wants to show up at nationals and isn’t planning many/any competitions before then.

Anyone know where I can watch Olympic Channel coverage of the women's event for NHK? I'm interested to hear Ashley's commentary.

This may not be the correct thread for this but what did you think of Ashley? I listened to her last night. She sure gave it to Tarah and I'm glad she did. Otherwise you could tell that she's new to this

@kwanatic I would assume some of it will be posted on YouTube.

@AngieNikodinovLove I liked that she was kinder to skaters she didn't know, but for those she did know she didn't hold back criticism when it was needed. But it wasn't like she was mean - she did say that a lot of Tarah's struggles could be explained by her injuries.

Not to mention that there is an 8 hour time difference from the US east coast, so its already Wednesday evening there. She's surely there. They are just being completely radio silent. But I also noticed that Alex Krasnozhon has also been silent for almost a month on instagram. Maybe USFS has asked for silence or relative silence from US skaters, (Not that Ashley Cain has been completely silent, and she's been in Russia for over a week to adjust to the time difference.)

I think as the skaters get into the thick of the season, they pull back a bit from social media. For obvious reasons, it’s not the healthiest place for them to be since many people are unkind.

A respectable 4th from Lin at the Inge Solar Memorial Challenger event. A better SP would have got her on the medal stand.

But that means this season, U.S. ladies have won 0 medals on the JGP, 0 medals on the GP, and 1 medal in the CS events (Tennell, gold at Autumn Classic). Adjust expectations accordingly. :P

Phil Hersh's article on Bradie Tennell that was published on November 8th before NHK Trophy (link was posted originally in her fan thread yesterday): https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2018...ome-jumps-repeat-national-champion-mentality/
Excerpts:
Her current choreographer, Benoit Richaud, had been taken by surprise the first time he saw Tennell skate, at the 2017 Junior World Championships, where she was the highest U.S. finisher in seventh place. At that point, Richaud had never heard of her.
“I was almost shocked to see how good she was, because nobody was talking about her,” Richaud, 30, said Thursday via telephone from his home in Avignon, France.
“When I see how much she has improved in the last two seasons, I cannot tell you what her limits are. As a skater, she is still under construction. She has all the base technically. Now it is a process of developing her personality.”
Tennell’s nature is such that she is likely to remain an athlete who performs more than a performer who does the necessary athletic tricks. It also explains her limited presence on social media.
“I was very shy last year,” she said. “I’m working at coming out of my shell a little bit. But I’m not one of those people that’s going to be in your face all the time.”
...
“I was impressed from the beginning with how humble she is and what a hard worker she is,” Richaud said. “She is one of the easiest skaters I have to work with. When you talk to her and say something, she understands and does it.
“Every week, I see improvement on everything. She cares, and she wants to develop. Not everyone wants that – even big champions.”
