U.S. Ladies [#23]: Triple Axels? What a Novice Idea!

Starting out as a coach, no matter what level of a skater she is, she'll probably start out with younger skaters (maybe not the tiny ones since she's a world medalist and has had coaching training from Rafael, but probably Juv/Int/Nov skaters). For any Junior/Senior skaters she'll probably start as an assistant coach of sorts. I'd be shocked if she'd be the head coach of a Senior skater right off the bat given club/coaching politics.

I am sure Ashley will have mostly little ones who may not even be competing. She may also work with other coaches’ students as a secondary coach. Being a world medalist and a new coach will make her a novelty at first, but I would be shocked, especially at this point in the season, if any competitive kids moved to her as their primary coach. Juv and above are preparing for regionals, not switching coaches.

Most famous coaches and skaters turned coaches do coach learn to skate, older non competitive kids, adult skaters, mid range competitive kids, and sometimes even national competitors. Very few can fill 8 hours a day with high performance clients.

I would love Hanna to get the 7th JGP slot but not sure if she will be competition ready by then. Which bring up an interesting point. If she is not ready by the 7th event, I don't think she gets a bye. I believe Regionals are even earlier than the JGP event. Is she then Out for the rest of this season? I really hope not. I hope I am missing something.
She gets a bye through regionals to sectionals by getting any international assignment
I'm fairly certain the above is true and Hanna Harrell will receive a bye through Regionals because she was assigned originally to JGP Canada.

Can someone coach and compete at the same time?

A lot of Skating Club of Boston skaters coach/ed while still competing (Ross Miner, Simon Shnapir, Heidi Munger, to name a few I can think of offhand).

It's very good money, much more lucrative than working at Starbucks or Target, and a good job to have if you're in college as you can schedule around your school schedule.

I wish Ashley the best and hope she's happy in my hometown.

I don't see Team USA bios linked from USFS' Fan Zone website for Brynne McIsaac or Akari Nakahara and both their ISU bios are not yet updated fully so I will post their info here. Both are making their ISU Challenger debut in Salt Lake City this week.

Hey all y'all,

Well been up since 4 am, jetlagged since coming from from SPain a few hours ago.

Amber just finished in Italy, She got 58 +... so I guess around par with what Katie or Meagan and with what any other TBD will get at SkAm..... so maybe it is all relative....Hoping she kills in free.

P.S. Does anyone else want to move permanently to Spain besides me???

Add later: Well Tuks just went and got 65. I predict Kaori will soon take first, thus leaving Amber in 3rd place.

Anywhooo back to Spain... who's coming?

ETA: Amber finished in 4th place.

Stunning, womanly performance. I don't understand why she isn't ranked higher, but I don't care to understand the code of points. I hope she has major success this season.

I have no knowledge of what Tessa is doing now, but, the original plan, as told to me by her mother in January 2017. Make the 2018 Olympic Team, then go back to high school and work hard prepare for college.

I was hoping she they would reassess and aim for 2022 instead, but I don’t have any current info on her.

Amber was 5th in the FS, just ahead of Lindfors, 6th overall, and I like both of her programs this season. :)

SP (58.57 4th): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irbGIcDqY30 (audio is not muted ... yet)

FS (107.68 5th): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxMwdyD8d-Q

I'm glad she had a decent competition overall (she seemed happier after her FS) and hope her confidence will continue to grow this season.

I was watching live....Uggggg...

She started off so strong with 130 this summer.

I guess for the TBD spot it really doesn't matter between Amber, Megan or Katie.. Its hard for me to make a case for my girl Amber.......

I too have seen her Gaga Bang bang program early this year and I quite dislike it..... :( Why a hip, young thing like her is skating to that? I dunno.

SP is good tho. Her dress and choreo are amazing!!

Positives: No warhorses tho. And for ANL thats worth something. lol

Thanks for this, I much prefer the LP to the SP. The SP is fine, but it's just pretty standard GFB, she does it fine, but others have done it better. I think the LP suits her style a lot, she seems very comfortable with the music and moving to it, much more natural. I wish there were stronger tempo shifts in the music and I hope to see her give some good face and sell that last choreo sequence, but I think it's quite good.

Angela Wang spoke to @clairecloutier after the "Evening with Champions" show at Harvard about her recent coaching change - link is posted both in the EWC and Divine Sport blog threads: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...-benefit-sept-14-15-2018.104321/#post-5412934
Relevant excerpt:
Wang said that the Kwans [who co-choreographed Angela's SP to "Praying" by Kesha] were instrumental in her recent coaching change to Ravi Walia. After 7 years of training in Colorado Springs, she felt it was time for a change. There were no issues with her situation in Colorado. “But I felt if I didn’t try something different, I would regret it,” she said. When she reached out to the Kwans for advice, Michelle and Karen both recommended Walia as a potential new coach. She made the move to Edmonton, Canada, to work with him just a couple of weeks ago, and said everything is going well so far. Meanwhile, Wang continues to pursue her bachelor’s degree in exercise science, taking one online course this semester.

If only she could put it all together at last. I would not be at all surprised to see her challenge for a medal at Nationals.
From your lips to...as they say. I'm glad @clairecloutier asked her about the Kwan comparisons and she said she's heard them before, as I'm glad I'm not the only one who's thought that. She's such a lovely, lovely skater, I hope she can put it together.

As I write this about Wang, I realize how much I write the same thing ('she has so much talent, I hope she can put it all toegether someday') about so many U.S. ladies in this thread and all it's previous incarnations...Le Sigh...

Izzo is confirmed for JGP#6. She was the placeholder name for JGP#7; Harrell's name is listed there now (not confirmed on USFS page). I'm surprised that Kalyan is not getting the nod. She's the top scorer of the Americans on the JGP this season (160.60), so if they're giving out second event assignments, she definitely deserves it. ETA: or maybe the plan is to give Kalyan one of the later Challengers for a second event?

funny that kalyan had the highest score but the lowest placement of her , Izzo and Cui. Glad Harrell is recovered apparently. No Americans will make the final so I'm whatever about the 2nd spots, but it's good if cui can bump her SB score up hopefully...
