If you look at last year's nationals, Morozov ignoring Bazin is nothing new.

I second your nomination of Morozov/Bagin, especially as for Russians these are 2 male surnames, so a gay couple at least on paper!

Kawabata - wuzrobbed on PCS and GOE, even with the one jump error.
Mihara - I still find her post-illness appearance a bit unsettling, but it's great to see her doing so well.
Miyahara - great to see her again. Shame about the loop.
Sakamoto - previous season Kaori re-emerged to hand Kihira a big lead.
Kihira - she runs this town, there's no doubt. The program prior to the step sequence is pretty blah (she's never had a short program that I've loved).

For reasons that I do not understand, da bossman found it easier to admit Icd Dance couples than Pairs. Pairs should be the easiest discipline of all for making the team, and Ice Dance the most difficult. But now that we've staged the coup....

1) Skater needs a complete package to potentially be a top skater at Euros/4CC's/Worlds/Olympic level YES
2) Skater needs to have the ability to absolutely rock one day and splat the day after. Even better: rock and splat during one program YES
3) Skater is not afraid of breaking one's heart over and over again YES, YES, YES!!!
4) Skater needs more splat/messy performances than great ones YES

1) Worlds/Olympic medalists and Euro/4CC's champions are not eligible YES
2) Multiple Euros/4CC's medal winners are not eligible YES
