Survivor season 37: David vs. Goliath

Seems like a really interesting cast -- a few alphas, a few crazies, a few salt of the earth people -- Just really unfortunate that Pat of the Davids had to leave the game after such a fluke thing happening coming BACK from an immunity challenge...

Well, there is a Goliath, Angelina, who is from 5 miles away from where I live (Sparks, NV), so I guess I'll have to root for her. Which means she'll be a royal pain in the a$$ and I'll end up wanting her gone first. It doesn't start here for another hour or so.

I enjoyed the first episode. I am more in the Goliath demographic but felt like that group seemed a little entitled. Maybe it was just a function of the Davids getting more screen time and the unfortunate fluke at the end, but they seem more sympathetic to me. Natalie appears to be the only obvious psycho so far, though, so I think I can find several players on both tribes to root for.

Well I totally hate the Goliath's already. Just the smug, arrogant, entitled looks and comments just from that first 15 minutes on that boat and I am now Team David all the way. Don't know anyone's name yet, don't know who individually I'll be rooting for, but I'll be rooting for Team David until we are down to individuals.

And what the hell happened to the dude they had to evac! I don't understand what happened. Is there any scuttlebutt out there on the interwebz detailing what happened, what his injuries were, how long it took to recover, etc., because this show taped almost a year ago, didn't it? All the articles I'm seeing are posted just after the premiere ended and only detail exactly what we saw on the show.

.ETA: found Jeff's take on what happened. More detail but I still don't understand what happened.

Does it seem like almost every minute of their experience so far has been drenched in rain? Ugh! It rains a lot where I live, but I have an umbrella, rain gear and a warm, dry home. Their experience so far has looked like the worst I've seen on any Survivor so far. :(

Strange that there was no footage of the accident. I thought they filmed everything. Maybe there was a possibility of a lawsuit as it sounds like production didn't provide a safe way for people to get back to their beach/shelter.

When being transported between camp and challenges, the contestants are on lock-down, meaning they can't talk to each other. As such, they don't bother filming them (it would normally just be boring footage of people staring at each other or dozing). It will be interesting to see if that policy changes after this.

If I had to guess, he probably slammed his back into the boat after hitting the wave and it maybe knocked the wind out of him enough that they had reason to panic.

I am always not so sure about the themes that Survivor comes up with, but this season looks like it’ll be interesting. There are a lot of non-typical players and this is definitely not a season full of model recruits.

I immediately recognized the writer who was on The Amazing Race, and you know there’s a superfan in the bunch when she immediately placed him, too.

Christian is going to drive me crazy but he will at least be an interesting and calculated player.

And there are 8 players this season that are my age or older! So I don’t need to give up on that Big Brother (or Survivor) dream just yet. It would be helpful if I applied, though.

They also don't like to advertise that they transport contestants around; they like for us to think that the contestants paddle themselves from island to island or walk, because piling people into motorboats and speeding them from one place to another kind of ruins the mystique.

They stopped filming 24/7 several years ago and no longer tape all night the way they used to, as the contestants are usually just sleeping and it saves production money. If someone is up running around in the dark looking for idols, they'll stay and tape, but generally, they pack up for the night once everyone settles down to sleep and show up again around dawn. They do sometimes miss things this way.

I always thought to myself if I ever got on the show, I’d really pay attention to where the camera crew was. So many times, it comes across that two people are out scheming in the woods and another contestant walks by/is near enough but doesn’t notice them. It’s possible that cameraman isn’t just filming the scenery. Remember two seasons ago when the winner crept up on the rest of his alliance discussing voting him out while getting water?

Same thing with idols and in The Amazing Race. Sometimes the cameras pan to what the people are missing. Any time the camera wasn’t directly on me, I’d take it as a potential clue ;)

Anyways, if the camera crew stayed late at night and then followed someone, I’d know to get up and follow them on my own.

Totally agree Tony. I've said before that if I found an idol, I'd do my very best to conceal it from crew, and also any key decisions/alliances. I realize that after a bazillion seasons they know what they are doing, but still, the less they know the less likely they are going to drop a hint when they are doing confessionals with other players (say, Prancer, do you trust Jenny and Tony?) or that Jeff will do what he still sometimes does and ask leading questions (so Tony, is everyone out there looking for idols? Why do you think some people aren't?).

Also very good point about keeping an eye on who the camera's following especially now that we know they have less cameras and therefore must be chasing where they think the stories are.

This has been addressed a few times by contestants and by production, who all say that there are multiple camera crews spread around camp. They follow people all the time, so if you intended to track the crews, you would always be busy following different people around camp, often with someone following you, which would cue everyone that you were coming.

That’s another thing I’ve always wondered, and I’m sure has been addressed somewhere. Sometimes, it really does seem like Jeff’s questions are prying to get some drama out that the crew knows about or to drop subtle hints at things. But I figured maybe he asks a half hours worth of questions to everyone, and only the relevant things to situations throughout the prior few days get air time.

ETA- this year on Big Brother, Haleigh said she was pretty sure Kaycee won the second hacker competition because all of the cameras went to her room at the very end. Some of these people really do notice everything.

He swears that he never watches the dailies beforehand or allows anyone to brief him on what goes on, and everyone agrees that tribal council always lasts much longer than what is shown, sometimes going for hours.

Pat on his injury and evacuation.

And what the hell happened to the dude they had to evac!

The incident was explained -- coming back from the immunity challenge, a sudden storm came up that intercepted the boats with the teams before they could both be taken back to their respective camps -- the storm whipped up the water and caused big waves -- one such wave hit the Davids' boat -- Pat was sitting in the very back of the boat when the wave hit, and when it hit it forced the back end of the boat up suddenly and then slammed back down -- and Pat absorbed the full brunt of this hit -- when the doctors were assessing Pat, Jeff asked them about the injury, and they said it was a probable compression injury to his lower back, to even as severe as ruptured disc -- but I'm glad that the producers included the note at the end that Pat was flown home and has made a complete recovery...

I loved seeing Jessica talk about (brag about) how one needs to play the game from day one. And then see the look on her face, realizing that maybe she didn't play HARD enough since day one!

The downside was that, once again, the white people are ruling the game and the people of colour are...minorities.

:(

The editing this year so far has been pretty obvious as to who is going. That, or there are very little options or storylines to leave us in suspense.

That said, I think Natalie is going to be carried a long way through this game as the big villain who will never get any Final votes.

I felt like so many of the females on Goliath were so unfamiliar.
Natalie is a perfect goat, once they get to the merge, she can coast.
I like Mike, but he has done 2 things not well, idol search and his judgment of Jeremy. He was hesitant of Jeremy, and is aware of how he goofed up at first with the idol searching, so hope he can stay awhile.
I thought the tribe goofed in voting Jeremy out over Natalie - but there is a tribe switch, oh well.
But wow Jeremy, shut up, you got yourself voted out. the editing was obvious, but I do wonder if a few were swayed at the TC - I would want him gone too.
Angelina - may have a target on her back now as she was shown as instrumental in starting the Jeremy bandwagon.
And I like the Slam guy - he seems nice and amusing.

On the David tribe - I do like Christian, but I am not sure if he likes Gabby as much as Gabby likes him - would be fun to see a cute romance like that. With the tribe switch - it may save Gabby.
Christian in some ways reminds me of Cochrane.

The weather has been awful for them. I am enjoying it so far, but still don't know who so many are and the editing has been obvious.

No comments on the last show?

I finally got around to watching it. And I have to say, Alec, what are you thinking, dude? Yes, it was a move, but I don't think it was a smart move.

Jeff really likes Natalia and thinks she would be good for a second run. Meh. That means he is thinking of another returnee season.

I did wonder when Alec and Kara would get together, given their pre-season scandal. And there they are.

I've been enjoying the season so far, but I wish they hadn't shuffled the tribes up. It kind of defeats the whole david vs. goliath aspect when you mix them up. Plus with 16 people left, it's really difficult to keep track of names and faces still. At least all the tribes were divvied up with an equal number of davids and goliaths so we know that the davids had the cards stacked against them once again.

Interesting that the davids have lost 3 original members, and 2 of them were due to injury.

If Natalie makes it any further she is going to make it to the end because she's a perfect goat that nobody would vote for.

Natalia was quite the bitch so I'm glad she got blindsided. I  at "where do I put this thing?" when she brought her torch to Jeff. It also looked like she was so comfortable that she didn't bring her bag with her to TC. Oops.

I don't think Alec made a smart move either, but since I couldn't stand Natalia, it made me happy.

Yeah, I don't get what they were thinking either. Turning on your own tribe mates right after a switch is something I won't ever understand. Yes, you may not particularly like these people, but dwindling your numbers down before (hopefully) getting to the merge makes no sense. You have to hope that the other tribe really wants you, but more often than not, they just want you to do your own dirty work.

The season is kinda boring so far.
