RIP to an amazingly talented actress, singer and dancer (which was her early performing ambition until a severe car accident led her to turn to radio singing) and a compassionate, passionate friend to animals and advocate for animal welfare. And the Earth is a little less sunny today...

I really liked all of her movies. She showed what a great actress she was in Midnight Lace & The Man Who Knew Too Much & what a great comedienne she was in the Rock Hudson movies & others. She was not only a animal activist, she was a great friend to the LBGT community. One of my favorite movies was the Glass Bottomed Boat for the great cast - Rod Taylor, Dom Deluise, Paul Lynne, Arthur Godfrey, Dick Martin, & really everyone in that movie.

Ahh...she always gave you a warm feeling watching her on-screen, didn't she? Same with hearing her sing - anyone who's seen The Man Who Knew Too Much would also know that she was a very capable dramatic actress.

Seemed like a lovely, classy person off-screen, too, akin to Audrey Hepburn...RIP.

I read her book years ago. Her 3rd husband Melcher did a number on her. He was a Christian Scientist & he wouldn't let her see a doctor for female problems. She wanted more kids but due to not getting help when she needed it she almost bled to death & had to have a hysterectomy. She really didn't have that happy a life until later in life when she retired to Carmel.

I thought she was great. I still watch her comedies when I’m feeling blue.
James Garner worked with her twice and wrote many nice things about her in his autobiography - “Doris didn’t play sexy, she didn’t act sexy, she was sexy. And she could take a sexy scene and make you laugh. She’s so sweet and so professional- she made everyone around her look good.”

She was one of my all time favourites. I loved Calamity Jane and have the DVD. I will have to watch it again now. Wonderful singer and actress. Sad day.

I thought she was so wonderful. Her passing makes me very sad, indeed, but her long life brought joy to many.

She became good friends with Rock Hudson (They both regretted not making more movies together). If I remember the story correctly, when he was shipping out, she came & sang for the troops. This was before he became a movie star but she was already an established one.

Now there are only two ladies of that generation left that I can think of: Olivia DeHaviland & Angela Lansbury.

The James Garner movies are my favorites.

What a lady! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Mpd-iiUuqo (A&E Biography)
I didn't know about her son, Terry Melcher, and his accomplishments:

My Mom's favorite song was Sentimental Journey (We played the versions by Rosemary Clooney & Ella Fitzgerald at my Mom's funeral, as she once said Clooney was her favorite singer growing up)

When I was graduating from grade school, my Mom sang Doris Day's Que Sera, Sera to me!

It's sad that Doris Day never found true love in her life's relationships, despite all the love she gave...
I especially remember her devotion and advocacy for animals:

Our local NPR station just replayed the Fresh Air interview that Terry Gross did with Doris Day in 2012, on the eve of her 88th birthday. It was rare for Doris to do any interview at that time. She sounded pretty good. I just sat in my car in a parking lot for 20 minutes to hear the whole thing. You can listen to it here. She was so sweet to the interviewer at the end.
