I did like the Lady GaGa joke. She has made that comment in sooooo many interviews. And I am glad that Sandra is one of the hosts.

The opening is awful and Sandra Oh is really annoying. They are both annoying,

I don't get the Sandra Oh love, and I'm Canadian. :scream::scream::scream:

To be fair to her, I never watched 'Grey's Anatomy'.

'Killing Eve' is way too silly for me, I only got through a few episodes.

I have never watched any of her shows. I don’t watch shows or series on TV. I watch mostly politics/news/sports and sometimes game shows. Still, I am familiar with Sandra Oh’s name and I can recognize her on TV. I had never heard of Andy. I thought their opening piece was boring, not funny at all and they were screaming too much. If they tried to tell jokes, it didn’t work. I don’t know if that was fault of the script writers or the delivery. I heard she had never done this job before. I hope they can find someone better for the Oscars and the next GG. I do know that the originally planned MC was let go due to some allegations, but couldn’t they find experienced people? Opening of a show like this is very important. They lost me right from the start.

I do agree with you that it is important in terms of drawing in the audience.

But, I always skip through the openings of award shows, regardless of the host. And the song/dance numbers, which IMO are the horror, the horror.

Sandra Oh was worth it just to hear that last part of that otherwise awful monologue (I did love the Gaga joke and the Asian joke citing Aloha and Ghost in the Shell). She said she agreed to host despite it not being her thing because this year was one of the most, if not the most, racially diverse years in terms of nominees and she wasn't sure if next year will be the same, and said it probably won't. She felt she had to be there on that stage to honor that.

It started blah, but I liked the Lady Gaga joke and the Crazy Rich Asians joke bringing up white casting of Asian people with Emma Stone screaming "I'm sorry!"
I loved "It's not for you." Zing!

(Now, will some kind person explain the joke to me even though it wasn't for me either?)

I thought their opening piece was boring, not funny at all and they were screaming too much. If they tried to tell jokes, it didn’t work.

Oh, I loved it when they were "roasting" people by saying nice things. It shows you don't have to be nasty to be funny. (A lot of the roasting shows I've seen have made me uncomfortable.) I gave them a lot of leeway after that, which is good for NBC because the show wasn't that interesting in the long run.

Don't worry, my family had to have it explained a long time ago too because my family drinks heavily with no issues (related to that). Some Asians have an allergy to alcohol where when they drink it, they turn extremely red. Some call it "Asian flush" but I've known it as "Asian glow".

These look closer to what I imagined the Oscar nominees will look like. BAFTA is an important precursor because the British Film Academy have a lot of overlap with the American Academy. BAFTA liked A Star is Born a little less than the Globes did although it did get a Screenplay nomination that it did not get at Globes, and it really did not recognize Black Panther but that's to be expected from the British Academy who are notorious for ignoring black talent with some notable exceptions. Bohemian Rhapsody missed out on Best Film but got in for Best British Film. Unlike Best Film, Best British Film recognizes both producers and directors, so director Bryan Singer, whom the cast has been working overtime to ensure his name is NOT mentioned during their awards run, is a BAFTA nominee thanks to that nomination.

Bohemian Rhapsody missed out on Best Film but got in for Best British Film.

Brian May was a touch salty about it on instagram this morning.

Good to see BoRhap getting a few of the behind-the-scenes noms, too. The costuming, hair and makeup in that movie was very very good and they'd clearly done their research - a lot of the costuming, particularly for Brian and Freddie, was 100% perfect and they nailed down the hair pretty well.

Oscar campaigns are getting dirty. Two stories have been released saying Green Book director Peter Farrely admitted he was a Louis CK style flasher (apparently done for pranks as opposed to sexual gratification) who flashed his penis to unassuming people including women about 500 times. And now it comes out the screenwriter Nick Vallelonga, who is the son of Viggo Mortensen's character, bolstered Trump's debunked claim about seeing thousands of Muslims cheering during 9/11 in Jersey City (even the JCPD denied that happened) tweeting “100% correct. Muslims in Jersey City cheering when towers went down. I saw it, as you did, possibly on local CBS news.” But the tweet was deleted as of today and then he deactivated his Twitter account when it resurfaced.

I mean these things happened, but I wonder who is behind all of this being unsurfaced NOW.

Really? Well you missed some great belly-laughing one-liners when Billy Crystal hosted the Oscars back-in-da-day! ;)

Unsurprising, as Oscar campaigns aren't known for being kind and generous. Nothwithstanding back-stabbing tactics, bad or questionable behavior and comments can catch up with a person. Karma being a b**ch, as commonly noted.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association held their cleverly named "Critics' Choice Awards" last night and here are the winners:

http://www.criticschoice.com/critics-choice-awards/

BEST PICTURE “Roma” (Netflix)
BEST ACTOR Christian Bale – “Vice” (Annapurna)
BEST ACTRESS – TIE Glenn Close – “The Wife” (Sony Pictures Classics) Lady Gaga – “A Star Is Born” (Warner Bros.)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Mahershala Ali – “Green Book” (Universal)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Regina King – “If Beale Street Could Talk” (Annapurna)
BEST YOUNG ACTOR/ACTRESS Elsie Fisher – “Eighth Grade” (A24)
BEST ACTING ENSEMBLE “The Favourite” (Fox Searchlight)
BEST DIRECTOR Alfonso Cuarón – “Roma” (Netflix)
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Paul Schrader – “First Reformed” (A24)
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY Barry Jenkins – “If Beale Street Could Talk” (Annapurna)
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY Alfonso Cuarón – “Roma” (Netflix)
BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN Hannah Beachler, Jay Hart – “Black Panther” (Disney)
BEST EDITING Tom Cross – “First Man” (Universal)
BEST COSTUME DESIGN Ruth Carter – “Black Panther” (Disney)
BEST HAIR AND MAKEUP “Vice” (Annapurna)
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS “Black Panther” (Disney)
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (Sony)
BEST ACTION MOVIE “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” (Paramount)
BEST COMEDY “Crazy Rich Asians” (Warner Bros.)
BEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY Christian Bale – “Vice” (Annapurna)
BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY Olivia Colman – “The Favourite” (Fox Searchlight)
BEST SCI-FI OR HORROR MOVIE “A Quiet Place” (Paramount)
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM “Roma” (Netflix)
BEST SONG
Shallow – “A Star Is Born” (Warner Bros.)
BEST SCORE Justin Hurwitz – “First Man” (Universal)

With Regina King winning here and the Golden Globes and NOT winning SAG and BAFTA as she was not nominated, I think the Best Supporting Actress race is wide open, if she receives an Oscar nomination. Lady Gaga and Glenn Close tying for Best Actress is a little funny to me. I think Lady Gaga was probably going to win outright but the Golden Globes made Glenn Close a viable alternative and people in that group ended up voting for her to the point where she caught up. Christian Bale won two awards last night.

Nice to see First Reformed get some awards traction. I think it's funny how these are called the Critics' Choice Awards but many of these choices did not align with the big critics at all. BFCA are "reviewers" who do reviews for television and radio and some times Internet segments.

the critics really Hated Bohemian Rhapsody, I like Christian Bale very good actor, But Malek was transcendant as Freddie Mercury the movie is heading to 800 worldwide and that's without a china release I still think he is a lock for the Oscar I can't see the academy running to give bale a second Oscar for portraying a vice president in the boring vice movie, and amy adams was downright laughable in that role made lynn Cheney a total caricature.

I beg to differ. Vice was a well made movie and Christian Bale was phenomenal as Dick Cheney. I have a tough time picking between him and Rami Malek for Best Actor.

I feel the critics were very unfair to Bohemian Rhapsody. I don’t always like blockbuster movies but I liked BR very much.

I strongly disagree with your comments on Amy Adams. I dont expect her to win the supporting actress Oscar (if she gets nominated) but she does not deserve such insulting comments,

All this hoopla about Roma is really bothering me. It gets best pic And best foreign language awards, it’s not fair. They should not nominate the same movie in two categories. It is like if an actor got nominated for a lead role And a supporting role. I know it fits in the current rules, but those rules need to be revised.

I am not even sure that Roma is as great as it is made out to be, by critics. I will find out soon. I don’t always agree with critics. I thought If Beale Street .... was one of the worst movies that came out this year, along with First man.

Mahershala Ali getting a supporting nomination and award is also disturbing. His was essentially a co-lead role.

It's like the Animated Feature category and how Documentaries could theoretically be nominated for Best Picture. I don't mind Foreign Films being nominated for Best Picture. And I like how those movies get recognized in the broader sense. But then if it was up to me, at least four Foreign movies this year would be up for Best Picture. You may not like Roma but not every movie that gets nominated for Best Pic is liked but all. Maybe they should change the rules that if you have a foreign-language film and it's eligible to be nominated for multiple awards because it played in the U.S. then you're out of the running for Best Foreign Language film or you have to choose one. I know when critics circles have a Foreign Film named as Best Film, they give another movie Best Foreign Film or vacate the spot.

I do think it's weird how Mahershala Ali is getting nominated in Supporting, but this type of Oscar strategizing has gone on forever. I think maybe they should do something about it because it's becoming more common for lead roles to be nominated for Supporting categories and it just takes the space away from actual supporting roles (and wins).

What bugs me more is something like Christian Bale being up for best actor and best comedy actor.
Insulting to the other comedy actors, as though they're not good enough to be just best 'actor' without the descriptor in front.
I also think that if they have a comedy award, they should have an equivalent drama award.

'Best pic' was missing from the list @VIETgrlTerifa posted, so I wondered what it was.

I agree with you that the same movie shouldn't be nominated for two Best Picture categories.

A few friends who have seen Roma confirm what the critics say, that it is wonderful.

It looks wonderful to me from the trailer.

We actually went to the theater to see it, but it was sold out, and it was the last day it was showing here. I will wait to see it on TV - a friend says the film is well-suited to the smaller screen.

Beale street getting screenplay nominations is laughable. IMO that screenplay ruined what could have been a good movie. I couldn’t wait to get out of the theater.

the critics really Hated Bohemian Rhapsody, I like Christian Bale very good actor, But Malek was transcendant as Freddie Mercury the movie is heading to 800 worldwide and that's without a china release I still think he is a lock for the Oscar I can't see the academy running to give bale a second Oscar for portraying a vice president in the boring vice movie, and amy adams was downright laughable in that role made lynn Cheney a total caricature.

Christian Bale is winning the Oscar. You heard it first here folks.

A screenplay nomination for Leave No Trace is mystifying...there's very little dialogue and plot and much of the movie has Ben Foster and his young co-star tramping around looking sullen in the woods.
