Movie Award Season 2018 Oscars and Precursors

I figured I would make a thread separate from the movie thread so that one doesn't get bogged down too much by various critics picks and awards discussion.

Every year, various critics groups and industry and other award bodies come together and announce their choices for the best of the year. It usually gets started around festival time in the late summer/early Fall where studios and distributors submit films that they believe will be awards fodder. Then a lot of buzz happens there and we can see how much they follow through towards Oscar.

Oscar is not the be-all-to-end-all and a lot of these groups are worthy awards in their own right, but award season has become such a sport in the past decade or so that all of these different groups are looked at as Oscar precursors. It starts out with Gotham (New York independent film awards) and the Independent Spirit Awards (the L.A. based group). Then various critics circles start their announcements with The National Board of Review always being the first and the National Society of Film Critics often being last (even after the Golden Globes some times).

The big critics choices I always pay attention to every year are The National Board of Review, The New York Film Critics Circle, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the National Society of Film Critics (not to be confused with the Broadcast Film Critics Association that does the televised Critics' Choice Awards) only because they've been around the longest and tend to contain some of the more respected published film critics.

With the critics' choices, I don't think a movie not being named hurts them for Oscar so much. I think what they really do is give smaller movies a fighting chance to be in the conversation. I do think they may create a backlash that savvy rival studios can exploit if one film ends up dominating the critics' choices and non-critics who see it don't understand what the fuss is about and get behind another movie to ensure that critical favorite doesn't win. IMO, it happened with Boyhood and The Social Network where they dominated all the critics awards and then Birdman and The King's Speech took advantage and took all the guild/industry awards including Oscar.

After the critics make their choices, then various awarding bodies start announcing their nominees and winners. The Golden Globes are made up of the Hollywood Foreign Press and people still don't quite know who makes up those members despite its official description as being made up of published journalists (not film critics or academics or filmmakers) from around the world. They have a shoddy history, but I have to say they've been making pretty good choices for the last few years and I've agreed with the GG more than Oscar these days.

Then you have all the guild awards that represent different facets of the Hollywood industry: Editors, Cinematographers, Writers, Actors, Directors, Producers, etc. Many of these members are also member of the Academy (Oscars) but they contain many more members (in the thousands) than are represented at the Oscars as they consist of the entire union membership of these guilds and often include television members. This is where you see the most overlap with the Oscars.

The British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have also become pretty good precursors as its membership may overlap with the Academy as well.

Last, the Oscars are made up of over 6000 members consisting of those who work in the industry, or used to work in the industry. Membership is invite only. Each member is supposed to be a representative of one of the branches of the Academy (sound, visual effects, actors, composers, writers, directors, editors, cinematographers, etc.). Each branch is responsible for picking nominees for their respective categories but the full membership picks the nominees for Best Picture. Once the nominees are out, then the full membership may vote for all of the categories with some exceptions (I think foreign film and documentary film categories can only be voted by members who attend special screenings of all of the nominees...at least it used to be that way).

Also worthy of note, Best Picture is voted on a totally different system than the other categories. Unlike the other categories, a winner isn't chosen by the nominee who has the most votes, which run the risk of a plurality winner rather than a majority winner. Rather, the Best Picture nominees are ranked by all members from 1st to whatever the last number is for that year and whichever film has the highest ranking from that system will win Best Picture (much like the figure skating ordinal system). That's may help explain why Moonlight won Best Picture but lost most other awards to La La Land or didn't sweep the other awards that La La Land did not win.

So as of today, here are some of the announced nominees/winners from various bodies. Anyone may feel free to update this thread with new lists as I won't be able to keep up-to-date as quickly as I probably should for a OP of a thread like this.

Because I didn't see it. Feel free to continue talking about this in that thread then and update that thread yourself and I'll stop looking up the information and updating. Feel free to copy and paste the lists I provided in here in that thread or ask for a merger.

The Joe Barber Award for Best Portrayal of Washington, DC:
The Post

It seems like the critics have been split on their choices as no film has received a consensus. I think D.C. seems the be the most Oscary of the choices so far.

Sight & Sound announced its top movies of the year (a lot of these choices depend on if the movies have been released in various countries internationally already which is why you saw Moonlight on both last year's list where it ranked high and this year's list when it ranked low...most likely voted on by people who live in countries where Moonlight was released that year. Silence was a movie that came out last year in the U.S. as well and is on this list. Lady Bird has not been released in the UK and other countries where some Sight and Sound members reside yet and some think if had been it may have ranked higher). Twin Peaks was a very big surprise as it aired on television. I guess because it was filmed as one long movie as opposed to an episodic fashion and David Lynch sees this as a movie and not a miniseries, that made it qualify...or maybe Sight & Sound doesn't have strict rules and the international critics and curators who vote on this list don't care about things like whether something qualifies.

I don’t think it will happen but I’m rooting for a Sally Hawkins win. I haven’t seen Shape of Water but she’s been so brilliant so many times, including Maudie which came out this year.

Baby Driver was a comedy? I know that some of Kevin Spacey's are funny now, but I don't think they were intended that way.

I think it probably falls closer to the musical side of things. Even though there's only one or two original songs it still used the music in it just as most musicals. Especially considering the Musical or Comedy category seems to be a catch all category for whatever doesn't fall strictly under the Drama category.

I suppose so. I kind of forgot that Ansel Elgort sang during the movie - or at least lip-synched. :D

The comedy/Musical category at the Globes can sometimes have :confused: selections not in terms of quality but categorization. I remember when Jim Carey won for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy for the Andy Kauffman biopic he did and he was like “I thought we did a drama.”

The Screen Actor's Guild can be a great predictor for Oscar because the Acting Branch of the Academy makes up the largest numbers of its membership. That said, SAG has way more members (in the thousands) than the Academy does, so take that for what its worth.

Nine films have advanced to the Foreign Film nomination pool:

Chile, “A Fantastic Woman,” Sebastián Lelio, director;

Germany, “In the Fade,” Fatih Akin, director;

Hungary, “On Body and Soul,” Ildikó Enyedi, director;

Israel, “Foxtrot,” Samuel Maoz, director;

Lebanon, “The Insult,” Ziad Doueiri, director;

Russia, “Loveless,” Andrey Zvyagintsev, director;

Senegal, “Félicité,” Alain Gomis, director;

South Africa, “The Wound,” John Trengove, director;

Sweden, “The Square,” Ruben Östlund, director.

There's some talk that France's selection BPM (Beats per Minute) was snubbed and wondering if its explicit gay love scenes may have turned the nomination committee off. The reason why there's talk about that is because other critical darlings in the past have also failed to garner a nomination that covered the same ground and were more bold in showing same-sex love scenes including Blue is the Warmest Color and Carol.

There's some talk about Cambodia's selection First They Killed My Father and Angelina Jolie getting snubbed, but most of that talk had more to do with the fact that Jolie went the Netflix route and what it means for Mudblood. It's giving people some memories of Beasts of No Nation's snubs. That said, I remember the reception of that film being more muted (not negative).

I'm really happy that Hong Chau, a Vietnamese-American from New Orleans (like me! 504 represent!), has been nominated for a Golden Globe and a SAG award and may well be on her way to an Oscar nod. A first for anyone of Vietnamese-descent. I just hope f*ckboi Matt Damon's idiotic comments (and they're not the first) don't derail her Oscar chances.

I didn't even realise Downsizing was on the awards radar until I saw Hong Chau got nominated for the Golden Globe. I'm happy to see more Asian representation on the Awards circuit. The last Asian to win an acting Oscar was Haing S. Ngor who won Best Supporting Actor for The Killing Fields in 1984. Only one Asian actress has won an acting Oscar and that was Miyoshi Umeki who won Best Supporting Actress for Sayonara in 1957.

That being said, I don't like Matt Damon, I didn't care about him before, I saw The Martian, although I will admit I went to it because I knew Jessica Chastain was in it. He's just never been someone I cared about. After his idiotic comments in relation to Weinstein's behavior it has developed into a full fledged dislike so I doubt I'll be seeing Downsizing, or I'll wait for it to show up on Netflix where I can watch it for free.

It looks like Lady Bird and Get Out were both shut out of the Best Film and Best Director category. BAFTA tends to correlate with Oscar more than not (except for some very British choices or films that hadn't been released in the UK at the time). I'm sure they'll get in Best Picture for the Oscars with having more than five slots. For Best Director DGA will be an important indicator if Gerwig and Peele get in after being snubbed at both the Globes and BAFTA after being recognized by almost every critics' award. The director's branch of the Academy has gone against the grain before and has even made two surprise choices in one year. I believe the Ben Affleck snub year was one of them where three of the nominated directors at BAFTA and GG (same people) were not nominated for the Oscar (BAFTA put in Michael Haneke and GG put in Spielberg both of whom would get in for Oscar).

Even though Best Supporting Actress is really the Allison Janney/Laurie Metcalf show, it's interesting that GG, SAG, and BAFTA do not agree outside of those two. GG and SAG nominated Mary J. Blige and Hong Chau. GG went with Octavia Spencer while SAG went with Holly Hunter. For BAFTA, Spencer got in with two Brits replacing Blige and Chau.

I believe the Ben Affleck snub year was one of them where three of the nominated directors at BAFTA and GG (same people) were not nominated for the Oscar (BAFTA put in Michael Hanele and GG put in Spielberg both of whom would get in for Oscar).

Three billboards...is a British film?

I see a couple of foreign language films that were nominated last year for either GG or Oscars (Elle and the Salesman)- why is that?

Three billboards, Shape of water, and Dunkirk may be front runners for Best picture, and I agree with that (though I have some mixed feelings about Three billboards...).

I, Tonya has a lot of nominations. I am surprised. Initially I didn't take that movie seriously. I have still not seen it but it is high on my list.

Elle and Salesman probably weren't released in the UK until this past year. As for Three Billboards, it may have been a British production.
