I'd say that the big difference between the NBA/NFL and other North American pro sports leagues and the KSU is, in part, the level of government funding. But maybe I'm wrong and the KSU is funded completely through private money and there is, like the NBA/NFL, no need for transparency and accountability to the general public.

Can it, though? And even if it can do that, should it? To the degree the KSU receives funds from and is regulated by the national government, there may be due process, transparency, and public interest concerns that simply do not exist with the NBA and NFL.

Just because something is government funded doesn't mean you need so much transparency.

There are plenty of times when there's scandals and you don't need to say as many details as KSU gave. KSU basically said what happened in a very short summary. They could've much more simply said "Athlete A suspended for sexual assault and drinking. Athlete B suspended for sexual harassment and drinking. Athlete C suspended for entering the women's dorm."

They didn't need to add the details of athlete C being a minor and entering to see athlete A. They didn't need to include that athlete B's alleged sexual harassment was taking a picture of athlete A. They didn't need to connect these incidents at all. Or, given it had already leaked, they could've just left it at "two athletes were caught drinking and one was caught in the women's dorm."

They didn't need to invite the soap opera into the dialogue that they did. The way they announced this led rumors to fly, inappropriate speculation about the identity of the minor involved, and harassment of the athletes. They were the ones that broke the narrative that fans ran with, and regardless of transparency they had no reason to do so.

I think this is the same interview she gave a couple of days ago.
Seems it.

I had not realized, though, there was a video associated with it (had not opened the original links because I just read the translations). I guess this is why she was screenshotting the snapchat messages and posting them on her instagram. Seems very "extreme" to me to be conducting such interviews on TV, and I doubt it's helping the mental pressure on anyone.

I agree that they didn't need to connect the incidents. In fact, it would have been much better.

On the other hand, it isn't clear that what "Athlete A" did was "sexual assault" as we understand it in English or that it would have been actionable conduct had the victim been an adult. Furthermore, many jurisdictions treat sexual assault of a minor as a distinct offense from sexual assault of an adult.

on Reddit, people seem to be translating the offense as more like “sexual harassment (with touch)” than sexual assault?

To be fair, I've also seen people on reddit claiming she gave him a hickey. They've also been some of the ones propagating rumors about what went down - including that Young You took pictures of the assault and sent them to athlete C. Lots of very young fans eager for blood in this case. So I don't trust anything I see there about it.

In this case, this is people working on translating Korean and Korean law for American understanding. I don’t think there’s any reason to believe it’s specifically less accurate than people equating the charge to sexual assault in US law with no basis.

Also, I’m not sure what your objection is to people saying she gave him a hickey?

I noticed that the Korean to English translation by fans on the reason to suspend to skater B for one year was misleading.

KSU claims that skater B took sexually inappropriate photo(s) of A without A's consent, then showed them to skater C. KSU did not say the incident which caused to suspend B is related to the incident to suspend A.

ETD: Several news articles reported incident A and incident B in the same clause. That does not necessarily mean these two incidents were related or happened at the same time.

ETD2: sent to ---> showed them to

Jinny Kim found a partner! :cheer2: It's Nicholas Ying, who used to skate with Sarah Yoo for the U.S. It's very, very early and I don't mean to jump the gun, but I like what I'm seeing here. (Even if it is a Twilight program.) I hope it works out.

New article, with interviews primarily from Lee's side but also from a KSU official and C's legal representation.
https://www.dispatch.co.kr/2301517

The retrial will be held in late August.
I'd be curious to see a decent/non-Google Translate translation of this article.

From the article it sounds like Skater C's lawyer and parents did not want him to admit he was in a relationship with Haein during the first hearing. It also sounds like had he admitted that he was in that relationship and his previous visits to the dormitory that he would have been subject to at least a 1-month suspension rather than merely a reprimand and had he received that suspension he would not have been eligible to compete in the JGP Selection competition. So, he said what his parents/lawyer told him to say in order to avoid the suspension but that in turn put all the blame on Haein and she became subject to a far harsher suspension than she likely would have received had he been completely forthcoming with the panel at the first hearing.

Oh, and that article does NOTHING to conceal the identity of Skater C if you read the part about the JGP Selection competition carefully.

I'd been avoiding all this for sometime, but just ran into the reddit thread, so posting it here for whatever it's worth:

Worth reading that comment thread, and I'm also putting it here because there are reliable Korean posters here, who can verify it.

Just for the background information: The interview with A is by Dispatch, who relies heavily on sensationalism. Their specialty is private lives of celebrities. As a paparazzi, Dispatch is serious on collecting their own raw data and proofs, which made them popular in Korea.

The interview article is very long and includes several chat message captures bewteen A and C. It also has a chat message capture bewteen A and their agency. Both A and C have the same agency. (I am disappointed that their agency intervened in such a delicate situation.)

I am hesitant to do line-by-line translational check-ups between the original article and the English translation uploaded by a fan. This kind of check-ups is an emotional burden and takes a lot of time.

ETD: for ---> in, SNS ---> chat message

What about the comments that the ”public opinion" has changed and now is in Lee's favour?

Per this news article (Google translation) the retrtials of both Haein Lee and Young You (Skater A in the article) have been dismissed/rejected. The initial punishments remain for both - 3 year suspension for Lee (which means she won't be eligible to compete again until the 2027-28 season) and 1 year suspension for You (she can try for the Olympics next season, good luck with that since Jia Shin will finally be age-eligible next season).
