FSU Watch Party Saturday 4/4 - 1995 Worlds ladies SP [12pm CDT / 7pm CET]

Chen

very nice, she floats over the ice. First jump a bit unorthodox in the air, but landed it. Like how the footwork matches the music. Seamless.

Hmmm. Was that the 3rd Cabaret? Even the warhorses have warhorses.
ETA, DH's Zoom ended early. I've been following on my tablet.

Robinson

"Top 10 Jen"

Those jumps grind to a halt. Canadian audience is standing.

ETA: "There was nothing there that was outstanding." - Commentator.

Bobek

This is like a classier version of Czako's choreography
fantastic 3z-2t

don't think I've watched this program since 1995. She really did well!

Watching Olga Markova, I was surprised she wasn't at the 1994 Olympics. I see that Russia probably didn't qualify a spot traditionally due to Butyrskaya's result at 1993 Worlds, but was there not a second chance qualifier where they could have secured a spot?

Chen Lu clearly UR on the 3lutz. Should she be 5th in the SP instead of 3rd? I wonder how that would have turned out with IJS. Bobek with the "e" and Chen Lu with the "<". Kwan for world champion with IJS?

Assuming a competent panel, the whole final group would be rearranged. Surya might have gotten the gold given her content.

Spoiler for the long program, but Surya would have had underrotations or downgrades on at least three of her jumps in the long. It was bad enough that even in the lax standards of 1995, people noticed. I absolutely think Kwan could have won under current standards.

(That said, I’m happy that Chen won. Her programs were my favourite in the event.)

I'm a huge Kwan fan, but I'm glad this was judged under 6.0 rather than IJS. Sometimes, IJS doesn't really capture the big picture of who should have won despite it being analytical and accurate on elements.

Also, despite her being young and coltish with lots of work needed on her carriage and speed/power, I already saw the artist Kwan would become in her early programs. It was already there, but she needed to mature a bit and work on the ways to have that come through.

I think Kwan should have been 3rd or 4th after the SP. Either way, I would have had no problem putting her ahead of Bonaly in the SP as I think she was worse than Kwan on almost every element. Kwan already had better skating skills while Bonaly's speed was based on her athleticism (most of the program was posing on two feet and going back and forth from one end of the rink to the other in straight lines). I counted two major deductions for Bonaly's SP (the hand-down on the combo and having no footwork at all going into the triple flip). She also didn't really do a spiral sequence, her combo spin was a mess, and her flying sit spin wasn't really in a sit position. It's Chen's SP placement I'm wavering on.

There wasn't. I guess they learned their lesson for 1998. Maybe Russia made a point of it.

Mixed ordinals in 6.0.

I'm sure if we got FSUers, or IJS-era ISU judges and tech panel, to score the programs under today's rules, there would be disagreements among judges. Most of the disagreements in the tech panel might be how to count elements that don't meet today's requirements at all.

And as always it's impossible to judge Skating Skills accurately on video. But I think it's safe to say Kwan was the slowest in the final group, despite her other positive qualities.

She was definitely the slowest one out there not being fully developed yet. That said, I preferred the way she garnered speed than the way some others did. I still have the image of Bonaly's SP in my head.

I think Kwan would've benefited from the TES = PCS that is used today if judged under IJS. I will note though, that Chen didn't have huge technical marks so the judges in 1995 very well may have deducted for the <.

Agreed. 6.0 looked at programs in a holistic way and put more emphasis on performance. Chen was lightyears ahead of Kwan in how she performed her program and she was correctly rewarded. One could argue that Bonaly also had more command and projection. And reputation. :P I also think one could argue that Bobek should've fallen off the podium after her many mistakes in the LP even under 6.0, but that's getting ahead of ourselves.

If you guys can wait a bit, I can make the playlist and set up the Watch2gether link.

@skateboy, are you going to do it? If so, that's fine too. :D
