U.S. Ladies [#29]: Skating with Adjusted Vision

Mariah is skating to a medley of ABBA, her entire program isn't TWTIA. I think we should all be grateful to see any skating, warhorses or not.

And ANL - I love you like I love cupcakes, but Mariah doesn't always skate to overused music - she gives us a 50/50 smix, with one program being 'safe' and the other being somewhat edgy. If last season's short to Work B!itch isn't mixing it up, I'm not sure what is? Her 18-19 programs were great on her too - Celine for the short and Experience by Einaudi were fresh. I think the Einaudi piece was popular with several pairs teams in the season after she did it.

Hey there... I think I need to stop using ANL because it doesnt tag me and I never see when someone references me unless they use AngieNikodinovlove

I love you too.

OK, you're right!

Its just if anything is my pet peeve in figure skating its as the follows:

1. Warhorses...... yuck
2. Blowing kisses as part of choreography. Double yuck
3. Skaters specifically ignoring me when they see me about to bumrush them at practices. How rude!

What can I say?

I know ABBA isn't a particularly original piece, but I wouldn't call it warhorse territory either. To me, it takes like a lot for me to consider music a warhorse or where it seems a bunch of skaters within a 2-4 year period use a piece of music after one skater had some success with it...like for example that stupid "In This Shirt" song that sounds like a P/C reject song or when all of a sudden we had a huge amount of "Skyfall" programs.

We know she is skating to an ABBA medley, which is even more ?.

Mariah is a lovely, artistic, elegant skater, and she should probably be tapping into that strength. An ABBA medley, imho, is providing a grave disservice and not even close to showcasing what Mariah can do. Her skating talents surpass cheesy ballads and candy pop/light rock stuff. I could see an ABBA medley in an exhibition or a show, but not exactly great for competition; instead, feeling it could be a cringe-worthy performance, tbh. I felt the same way when Mirai used TWTIA. However, if Mariah is excited and feels good about it, that’s all that counts.

I think they're trying to find another vehicle to capture that "To Love You More" energy that was so successful for her.

I think ABBA programs tend to be more cringe than successful, but I think she’s purposefully trying to do an upbeat FS for this season so that next season (a more important season) she can go back to the style that suits her better. If she did three lyrical, slow pieces in a row for her FS there is the potential to come across a bit stale and the same. ABBA is a bit frivolous and might not be taken seriously, but better to do it now than at the Olympics. Worlds in Sweden also probably played a factor.

I’ve said this before, but my dream long program for her would be Appalachian Spring. East of Eden was one of her best programs and I think this piece would be similarly perfect of her. I am hoping that she and her team are saving something in this vein for next year.

I love this song. And that mid-80s motorcycle ride down The Strip with mullet flying freely in the wind is a MOOD.
It's also one of the most unintentionally funny movies of all time. You missed our recent watch2gether of it, but if you haven't seen it before, watch it ASAP. A good pairing would be Cobra or-- if you're in the mood for the second hunkiest 195-pound American male after ANL--Troop Beverly Hills.

I love that movie, but who is the hunk? Craig T. Nelson? I'm 6'/6'1" and also weigh around 195!!! I thought I was fat as F, but now those numbers don't seem so bad now.... lol

I wonder if the potential lack of audience for most skates was factored into the music decisions for skaters this year? Will a peppy piece or medley like ABBA that would normally inspire audience clapping and participation fall flat now or will it maybe wake the judges up during a less vibrant rink atmosphere?

but who is the hunk? Craig T. Nelson

I presume the only thing hunky about Craig T. Nelson nowadays is his bank account, thanks to Coach residuals.

HaHa.... I stand 6', 195 pounds of pure muscle

How provocative. I once engaged in a tryst with a man who had similar proportions. Unfortunately,he spent too much time in the discotheques and we separated. To this day I still have a visceral reaction to ABBA or any disco music.

Just because I’ll be grateful to see skating doesn’t mean I have to fart rainbows.

While I agree with the sentiment,I find the vulgarities unnecessary.

5 ladies recently were added to USFS' International Selection Pool (Kalyan & Lin were both in the ISP last season):
Senior - Pooja Kalyan, Violeta Ushakova
Junior - Jessica Lin, Audrey Meredith, Sofia Frank

I heard that skaters can submit videos for ISP consideration since club competition options are so limited this summer.

Refer to post #2 for the initial ISP list: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...ing-with-adjusted-vision.107389/#post-5833472

Thanks! I missed seeing Kanon Smith's Colorado Springs Invitational Novice FS (she scored 93.35!) to "A Million Dreams" from The Greatest Showman OST on Saturday's livestream but tweeted a photo of her protocol because it was ambitious for her age -- believe she is 12 now? -- and level (may have to scroll down a bit to view): https://twitter.com/SylviaUnseen/status/1304888236343525379/photo/1

This is what I posted in the U.S. Club Competitions thread in the Kiss & Cry section after watching her Novice SP on Friday:
Kanon Smith easily won the Novice Ladies SP (47.57) skating to a Mary Poppins medley; jumps were 3T (off-balance landing), 3Lz+3T< (received 3 bonus points) & 2A - she's an impressive, all-around skater! Kanon won the 2019 U.S. Juvenile Girls title, was invited to perform an exhibition at 2019 4CC in Anaheim as a local skater, and last season placed 5th in a competitive Novice field at the Pacific Coast Sectional Singles Final.
(Top 4 in each of the 3 Sectionals last November qualified for the National High Performance Development Team & Camp so Kanon just missed out).

Here was a 2-minute local TV news video on Kanon, then age 10, in February 2019:

I see Levito now has her own youtube channel.
It's not new :) - other videos from there were linked here last season.
I hope she keeps her SP for 1 more season. The music is wonderful and she is feeling it quite well.
Levito skated both of her programs ("Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps"/"Sway" SP & Malaguena FS) from 2020 Nationals for the ISP Points Challenge virtual competition (link to watch in this post here with scores copied out in the thread below): https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...allenge-sep-and-oct-2020.107555/#post-5857152

ETA:

The 2 latest junior ladies added to USFS' ISP are Haley Scott (6th in Junior at the Eastern Sectional last November) and Maryn Pierce (8th in Junior at 2020 Nationals).

I only realized today that Pooja Kalyan's FS to Gershwin's Porgy & Bess ("Summertime" & other orchestral selections) that she skated in the Colorado Springs Invitational this past Saturday here
was what she was going to skate in her senior debut at 2019 U.S. Nationals before she withdrew after the SP due to injury.

Kalyan scored 119.01 at the CO Springs Inv. (20 points higher than last month's Cup of Colorado FS) -- this is the highest club comp. FS score for a U.S. senior lady so far this season. She landed 5 of 6 triples, including her new combo of 3Lz-half loop-3S (step out) & both triple flips, plus received level 4s for all 3 spins & her step sequence. She also won the SP with a score of 60.92 (landed 2A, 3Lz+2T & 3F).

Audrey Shin was 2nd with a FS score of 103.31 -- highlight jumps were a clean 3Lz+3T & 3Lo+2T+2Lo -- and she skated to varied music from the Modigliani film soundtrack, choreographed by Tom Dickson. This comment was posted in the Kiss & Cry section:
This has tons of potential. The fast section in the middle doesn't connect for me at all right now, and it seems totally out of place. But the slower sections were great!
3rd in the FS was "fan favorite" ;) Sonja Hilmer (94.88) with her self-choreographed program to Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2. She showed a variety of creative movements that I thought expressed the changing tempos in the music really well and also does spins in both directions.

Pooja's musicality and lines were what struck a chord with me while watching her skate. Furthermore, her jumps are CLEAN when landed and she has sound technique on all of her jumps, especially the triple-Flip which seems to be her favorite. I wonder if she was heavily injured last season which was what contributed to her inconsistency, but watching her drastically improve with each outing is heartwarming. I wish her nothing but the best.

Kanon Smith is a bundle of joy and spirit! Her jumps have great distance, height, and speed. Her spins are GORGEOUS and her musicality and ability to perform are well beyond her years! I wonder if training the triple-Axel has made her double-Axel inconsistent. Nevertheless, landing five triples (her first double-Axel was supposed to be a 2A+3T combo) for an 11 (or 12) year old is no small feat! I hope she achieves everything and more!

For those of you that did not see:

The 2020 Virtual Challenge Skate concluded today and the Novice ladies event was won by Anila Bonilo with Gabriela Summer Panaligan coming in a close second. In the Junior ladies event, Isabeau Levito (7 triples w/ 2 3Lz's and 3F's) won gold, Adele Zheng (5 triples w/ 2 3Lz's and 2 3F's) earned silver, and Audrey came in 3rd in the Free and landed 6 triples (singled the 3Lo). Hannah Lofton (5 triples) was overall in 3rd place.
