 Some witchery is afoot with this inspirational thread title rip-off.

The original term was borrowed for the title of a late 50s Jimmy Stewart movie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell,_Book_and_Candle
The term has a rather intense and scary origination:

Here's hoping Bell weaves her magic for next season, so we all become bewitched, especially the judges!

Recent article on Ting Cui: https://usfigureskatingfanzone.com/...s-big-things-and-quads-are-in-her-future.aspx

Key Points:
- States that she's aware about her inconsistency and lack of focus during competitions
- Says that she gets very excited during her programs, so she makes "stupid mistakes"
- Does not want to fall behind the Russians
- Has been working on a 4T for awhile, but not very seriously because of injury and other aspects of skating
- This offseason, she says that she's more confident than ever that she will land the 4T and be ready to take on the Senior ranks next season
- Does NOT officially know if she's moving up, but she would like to sooner than later

It seems surprising that she still hasn't decided if she's moving up. I wonder what the decision hangs on.
An entry on the Grand Prix? She is only forty-seventh in the World Standings, and USFS might prefer to give an entry or two to Chen (21st), Gold (141st), Nagasu (27th) or Wagner (53rd) for Skate America if they are definitely coming back and seem worthy.

And then there's Kwan (not ranked). :sneaky:

Doubt that USFS would put Ting lower priority than any of those skaters ... can’t see any of them being competitive next season, better to invest in the future. Likely Ting would get the Skate America spot.

The only skater amongst those who I could see possibly getting priority over Cui would be Chen. Maybe also Gold but only if she is looking really, really good during a few summer comps. I highly doubt either Wagner or Nagasu will return to the competitive ranks.

It's one thing for all those skaters to be done or below the standard; it's another for Ting Cui to know that she will have at least one entry on the Grand Prix next season. If she doesn't have that, then she might want to compete on the JGP rather than the Champion Series.

Spun Silver's question was why Cui hadn't decided whether to compete as a Senior internationally next season, and as far as I can see, lack of an assured Grand Prix entry is the most likely explanation. YMMV.

I would say the odds of Gold or Chen being more competitive than Ting by this summer is like zero. I think USFS should give opportunities to skaters who can be competitive heading towards 2022.

That's kind of funny because that's how Gold and Chen were seen leading up to their own Olympics...well, Chen not so much but that 4th place finish at Worlds and being the highest placing American woman there helped a lot for her case. Right now, Ting can be brilliant, but she also has many examples of folding under the pressure. Hopefully, she'll work on it so she can grow in confidence and consistency. But I know we're talking about 2022 and Ting is younger and has less of a track record as of now to make people wary of her future prospects unlike Chen and probably Gold.

She IS assured a GP spot. Her SB is 19th right now.

Ting is both more competitive right now, and has stronger potential for the future - than Chen or Gold. Neither of those two were even able to compete in an entire competition this season. As for nerves, neither of those two have an advantage over Ting.

Five U.S. ladies are competing at Egna Spring Trophy in Italy, March 28-31, 2019 - competition thread in Kiss & Cry: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/2019-egna-spring-trophy-mar-28-31-egna-ita.105400/

Senior: Starr Andrews, Gabriella Izzo (her senior international debut) - competing Sat.-Sun.
Junior: Audrey Shin (J2 at Nationals), Calista Choi (N1, her international debut) - SP is Fri.
Adv. Novice: Isabelle Inthisone (N3, her international debut) - she is in 3rd place after today's SP. She skated to her Nationals SP music of "Not About Angels" by Birdy and her jumps were 3F step out, 3Lo+2T small step back, 2A.

Denise Myers, who coaches Bradie Tennell in Chicago, is in Italy with Choi and Inthisone.

Just saying, these narratives get repeated over and over once there's a new skater who hasn't "disappointed" us yet and we pin our hopes on them after the ones who had pinned our hopes on "disappoint" us and thus get "thrown away" in fans minds.

I have already been disappointed by Ting, and not just once :). But that doesn’t stop me from believing she is deserving of more opportunities, can further improve her tech, and get mentally stronger.

*If* Gracie and Karen has been competing this season (not just one SP each), then the situation could be different. It is likely they are nowhere near good competitive form - considering they haven’t been competing, and Karen has been injured. They have been pretty much MIA, which does not help their case of not being “thrown away” in fans minds. Unless I missed something, they weren’t even mentioned on the Nationals broadcast.

It wouldn't surprise me if USFS left 2 of 3 SA spots TBA, to leave open the option of assigning both Gracie and Karen, since that is their only chance to get a GP, provided they monitor well over the summer. I think in one of her interviews, Gracie mentioned her plan to compete this summer, possibly at the Liberty/Philly summer comp at her home rink.

As noted upthread, Ting is guaranteed 1 GP due to her SB ranking. IIRC, most skaters on that list (who weren't already guaranteed 2 GPs) have gotten 2 in the past. We'll have to see how assignments shake out this year.

Bradie and Mariah are ensured 2 Grand Prix spots due their placement in the Top 12 at Worlds. Bradie has an outside chance of getting an invitation to the Grand Prix Final, so her assignments will be meticulously planned out. Although we talk about 2022 Beijing, out of Ting, Alysa, and Hanna, only Ting is supposedly moving up. Then there's Ashley Lin (15) who scored 180+ last year, but was derailed by injury. Talks of Pooja (16) have dwindled after her injury at Nationals, so hopefully she's still on track.

Bradie - 2 assignments
Mariah - 2 assignments
Ting - 2 assignments
Everyone else - 1 or 2 depending on WD

Also, it seems Mariah's original FS plan did include the 3S and a 3Lz-Eu-3S, but it was scrapped after Nebelhorn Trophy.

Bell repeated the 3F and 3Lz in Oberstdorf so the 3-jump combo with 2S was planned as a double in her FS jump layout last September:
2A+3T
3S (replaced by 3Lo after this comp.)
3F+2T
2A
3Lz+1Eu+2S
3F
3Lz

Bell's quote to the ISU after her Worlds FS re. her lower TES:
Next season I am definitely looking to up my technical a little bit, compared especially to the girls in the last group, I have a lower technical score for my free skate, I have a lot of room to improve in terms of technical, and that is what I am going to do when I go back home and get ready for next season.

Bradie has to compete and win medals in order to qualify for the Grand Prix Final. No invitations.
Sorry, poor choice of words. Bradie could probably win a silver or gold at Skate America, and maybe a bronze at another event. With how deep the field is, she’ll need 22+ points to qualify.

Thanks for the info. :)

Mariah should definitely add a 3-3 in her Free:
• 2A
• 2A-3T
• 3Lz-3T
• 3S
• 3Lo
• 3F-2T-2Lo
• 3Lz

She is my favorite but I dunno...

She'll have to go up against one of Zag, Tursy and Medev

And one of Kihira, Sakamoto and Miyahara

Plus who knows who else gets an invite.... Mihara, Higuchi, 2 more Russians FOR SURE (those gals are maxed out)......

Saying she will win gold or silver at SkAm is a big strecth as of now if you were to ask me... But she is my fav.
