Being a male driven industry, it's not surprising that three movies with strong female leads ("Carol" "Brooklyn" and "Room") would all get Best Picture nods. It's rare when even one creeps into the Best Picture race, even with the roster expanded with up to ten nominations.

Carol did NOT get a Best Picture nom but did get noms for its 2 actresses (main & supporting). Biggest news seems to be the "black out"...no black actors or films nominated.

Never thought Charlotte Rampling would be nominated for an Oscar as she's far too interesting and unconventional, but what a pleasant surprise to see her on there.

"Carol" was beautifully shot and acted, but I thought it was a bit dull. I felt really sleepy midway through it.

I've seen so few films this year I am not as excited as usual. No way I'm going to be able to see everything by the Oscars!

And all the accolades in the world can't generate the slightest interest in a Steve Jobs biopic.

Tom Hardy is the common denominator there -good year for him! I'm very happy that he got a nomination for The Revenant, he was so haunting and at times stole the spotlight from Leo.

Yay for "Inside Out" getting a screenplay nomination... but I wish it had made it onto the best picture slate too.

Todd Haynes has never really been Academy-friendly, so I'm actually not surprised at his lack of director nomination.

Otherwise, only Charlotte Rampling would be considered a surprise acting nomination.

Even if he doesn't win, hopefully Mark Rylance will get more movie opportunities.

Even the screenplay nominations are all rather predictable.

A little more unpredictability was found in the documentary category.

"Carol" was beautifully shot and acted, but I thought it was a bit dull. I felt really sleepy midway through it.

Controversial film critic and evangelical Christian gay black man (I wrote those qualifiers because I think it adds to his mystique...like a mix of identities adding together to give us a really weird, almost contrarian perspective in film criticism) said "lesbians have never been more boring" when reviewing Carol. I have to re-watch Carol, but it was a movie I respected more than I actually liked. AND I loved Far from Heaven and his version of Mildred Pierce.

I do think Rooney Mara's nomination is probably one of the most egregious cases of category fraud I've seen. I know it may not be on the same level as Tatum O'Neil's or a few other examples, but she really was the heart and center of that movie.

I sort of wish Vikander was nominated for Ex Machina rather than The Danish Girl just because the first film is a lot more off-beat and cooler choice for the Academy, but their list is crazy conservative compared to what they could have nominated (Tangerine for example). But I had no doubt she'd be nominated for Danish Girl (either for Lead or Supporting) because the old men of the Academy love it when females play supportive and loyal wives/partners who help their men with their journey (even if they struggle with staying that way). That explains Helena Bonham Carter's nomination for that non-role in The King's Speech and the love for Felicity Jones in The Theory of Everything and even, to a smaller extent, Keira Knightley's nomination for The Imitation Game.

I'm loving the love for Brooklyn but even I admit it plays very well into Academy's sensibilities, though I think my love for it was all in the execution and how downplayed and lyrical that whole movie was.

Irish-born and bred. Naturalised Canadian (dual national). You really can't claim too much credit for this one.

Funny though how yer man who mangled speaking French wasn't Canadian, but Irish when it was convenient though.

And I'd love to see skaters use a more varied selection from his compositions, while we're at it.

Mad Max was my favorite of the year so I'm glad for Mad Max and George Miller. I know neither will win, but glad to see them recognized. What George Miller did with practical effects and world building was without peer in my opinion.

Also, really shocked no Ridley Scott nomination. I thought he was supposed to win this year.

All white nominees for Best Actor and Actress again...ugh. Michael B. Jordan, Will Smith, Idris Elba, Jason Mitchell...any or all of them could have been included.

Hope Earned It wins over that boring Sam Smith song.

For me "Mad Max" is a head scratcher. If I'm involved with "Carol" or "Straight Outta Compton" or "Star Wars" I'm wondering how MM received a nomination over my film. Obviously I'm in the minority considering the number of nominations it received. I didn't enjoy the film and still don't understand what others saw in it.

I would have preferred to see Vikander and Mara on the best actress list instead of supporting.

It seems Jennifer Lawrence is the new Meryl Streep. If she appears on the screen, she gets nominated. I would have liked to see her get a nomination for one of the Hunger Games movies but the Oscar goes for traditional roles.

Happy to see Rachel McAdams get a nomination. She has no chance of winning though, with Mara and Vikander on the list of Supporting.

I really didn't feel that Will Smith in Concussion was that great. He was one dimensional, so I am ok with him not getting the best actor nomination, but the movie deserved praise.

You should read all the write-ups by people who have been championing the film if you're interested in knowing what people like about Mad Max. I thought it was pretty incredible from a pure film-making standpoint and I loved the themes. Even if one can debate the merits of it's stance, at least it actually goes there. I also liked that it was a movie whose antagonist keeps and rapes women for breeding and enjoyment without showing a single sex/rape scene.

Someone upthread mentioned why MM got nominated for Star Wars. Not going to lie, I felt Star Wars was a fun film as a fan and provided a lot of fan service, but it was a pretty ok movie overall. Don't think it being snubbed for Best Pic or Best Director was unwarranted.

I felt that Mad Max: Fury Road was brilliant in creating a unique world, every single shot had so much detail and the use of practical effects went a long way in making me feel the peril that the characters were in which is something that is very much absent from action movies today in my opinion. There were also critiques of patriarchal structures that are not present in a lot of mainstream films. It's not for everyone, but for me Mad Max was the most memorable film experience I have had in a long time.

I think this was the biggest surprise when I saw the list. Lenny Abrhamson for "Room" is a complete shocker in that category. Hardy for supporting actor and McAdams in supporting actress are a bit surprising also. The Animated Feature category had two major surprises there as well ("Boy and the World" and "When Marnie was There") over major studio product.

I'm sure Oscar host Chris Rock might mention this.

I will have to see when AMC does there screening of all the Best Picture movies, I need to catch some of these pictures.

I guess the Academy preferred to see a bear eating Leonardo DiCaprio over seeing dinosaurs eating extras (which they've gotten to see plenty of time in the all the other Jurassic Park movies).
