Here is The Advocates article on Amber Glenn coming out as bi/pan.

Karina Manta gives Amber a nice shout

Gay, straight or bi, I still wish that a skater as beautiful as Amber Glenn would drop the blah “generic female pop ballad” programs. Save those for the exhibitions. She has the power & style for Tchaikovsky piano or violin concerti.

As far as the generic female pop ballads goes she has the ones I prefer.. because she can actually interpret what she is skating to.. unlike all the other young sprites who cant at all.

Because she has the ability to interpret she draws me in and in.

Things can look one way on the surface but dig a bit deeper and you get another story.

Good day, Handicapper General: do you have information or something about "what's deeper in terms of problems in Alysa's training"? Or are you choosing to assume the worst because '"oh! she is not like the others. and if not like the others, then something is wrong"??!!

You pulled my sentence out of context. My next sentence said that was a general statement and applies to alot of things beyond the skating world.

prior to that your comments were all about Alysa Liu.... general statements can't negate them.

I can more or less be sure of one more thing about Alysa. Her father is a very educated man, with 3 degrees, an immigrant from China. Alysa will go to a University at some point, probably when she is under 20, and will not showing her butt in shorts skirts to the masses until age of 30... She'll win all she can, probably a lot, and then get an education... Just like Karen Chen, Nathan Chen, Polina Edmunds, Sarah Hughes and many other kids of former immigrants from "communist/socialist" countries, who know the value of "knowledge/education is the only thing you can take with you when you have to run".

Alysa is enjoying her self, working hard, trying to do more than most US Ladies, and she is winning medals. She is young, and that's what one does when young - sports! and then get a real job.. :D

Yes my early comments were regarding Alyssa and then I made general comments (and they were stated that way). Please do not pull my comments out of context.

i do not know Alyssa nor her father nor do I claim otherwise.

I know the advocate is proud of her for coming out, but I’m Not sure if she’s really a favorite to win the national championship.

And honestly I wish we lived in a world where it didn’t matter and this wasn’t news

Same, but in Australia especially where the LGBTQI community fought long and hard for equal rights and gay marriage, our delightful conservative government is attempting to sneak through a new religious freedom act in an attempt to dismantle everything again.

Things can look one way on the surface but dig a bit deeper and you get another story. That is a general statement that applies to many situations.

Look at our recent Chaps and Olympians. Most told their story after their big accomplishments. Ashley tells about repeated concussions; Miriah tells hip surgery after the Olympics; Gracie we read about here; Karen and her foot/ankle/ boot problems; Bradie with back injuries when she was younger; Polina with the bone bruise. And that is just the top US ladies over the past couple of years.

Just saying having a life (regardless of age) that basically revolves around skating is risky on so many different levels. This applies to all top skaters, not one in particular.

Your first premise is not supported by your examples. "Dig Deeper" connotes that what is on the surface is not true or accurate. One could dig deeper and discover that Polina ate carrots on the day she was injured........not that it means anything.

If you "dig deeply" in just about anything you will find something. Net necessarily a cause and effect. Injuries are part of sport. They are expected. Most injuries, I do believe were public at the time. Didn't have to dig at all.

And "basically revolves around" connotes skating at the exclusion of everything. I think you are trying to say that skating is risky. And it is risky from your first day on the ice to your last

And, athletes (and people like me) compete while injured. You go out and do the best you can do, while making sure you don't really mess yourself up. If my friends with whom I ride didn't ride when something hurt..........well, we would never ride!

I agree, and there's a reason Tchaikovsky and other classical composer's music has lasted for generations, while these pop numbers vanish overnight. My music preference is (and always will be) music of the Masters.

Here's Nick McCarvel's Gracie Gold article:
Excerpts:
"I'm not as much outcome-focused as I have been in other seasons," Gold said. "Part of the success is just trying to come back. Trying to see if it was possible. Even making something kind of happen. I think we've [achieved] that. The next step is trying to produce quality skating at a competitive level.
"I just want to show – it sounds weird to say, but – I want to be like, 'I'm back!' I'm an athlete. I know how to skate, and there is some hope [on the ice] for future seasons. I want to be competitive again."
"Sectionals was all about surviving, so that battle is done," said Gold, who rated her free skate from the Eastern Sectional Singles Final last month with a "meh." She added: "I'm working on making everything cleaner, crisper, sharper. I want higher-level transitions."
To do that, one of her closest friends, four-time U.S. champion and two-time Olympian Jeremy Abbott, choreographed both of her programs. Through it all, Abbott has been a thoughtful listener and familiar collaborator.
"Jeremy is so good at what he does. It's been nice having a friend-slash-mentor" [to work with], Gold said. "I knew that he would be willing to put in the extra hours that I would need to accomplish even a fraction of what Jeremy could do."

I just hate spelling.

The Czisny part I have to look up every time! Gosh I loved her skating.

My favorite Czisny program; it was the complete package. Beautiful music, choreography, costume and skating! And I was lucky enough to see it live.

It's so hard to know with Gracie. Like many I'm a fan. But, I've heard her optimistic statements before. They often didn't reflect how she was really doing. I just hope she's not setting up a fail for herself. Regionals/sectionals were a great step but I would prefer that she not go to nationals. She was the queen there before. It will be stressful and might knock her back again. Why not wait, train and come back late summer with some minor competitions. If she really wants to be competitive it will take that much time. Skating technically is as demanding as it's ever been.

I totally agree with you. They say in AA that "Your mind is not a safe neighbor for you to hang out." It is also called stupid thinking.

The world loved Gracie's skating. She is a hard act to follow, especially by herself. Even if she is back to where she was (which I don't think anyone is claiming) skating is zooming past that level of tech ability. For someone of Gracie's stature to come to Nationals and not make the podium can't be good - for her. And then, if she does make the podium but is not chosen to go to Worlds...............What a mess that would be.

I know Gracie can do whatever she likes. She did that before, and it did not end well.

It's possible that you should worry about taking your own inventory, and not hers. (and that's just my opinion)

People are so great. And I just can't get over the fact that some people can read what is in my mind and my heart. It is an amazing ability you have.

I don’t think Gracie made the podium at her last nationals, so I don’t think she’ll have any reason to feel bad if she doesn’t make the podium this time around. Every skater had their own personal goals. She’s not shooting for gold this year, and it sounds like she’s okay with that.

I don't get the point of anyone dissecting Gracie's intentions and prospects in skating.

She is not claiming anyone's spot on the team because of "past accomplishments". She is not asking for funding or donations. She is not asking for any special treatment, politics or uses social media to gain popularity and advantage in skating. She is not dissing or playing games against other skater..... She just skates, tries to make it to Nationals in a fair way, through a legit selection process. so what's the point of trying to figure her out... ?

At best, the concerns are the same as with anyone else who is coming back from mental health issues: the gist is worrying that the skater will regress mentally if results don't match internal and/or external pressures and expectations, especially since skating well over a long period makes a .400 batting average look easy by comparison.

I'm sure Gracie has discussed this with her coaches and the people in her support system. This is something she needs to try, for herself.

If she falls on her face, she'll get up again, as she's done before, and learn from her mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, but sometimes it is better to do something and fail rather than not do it all.
