U.S. Ladies [#20]: In a Week, Maybe Two, They'll Make You a Star

I would be surprised. Usually sponsors decide way before the Olympic season. Most of the $$$ that's made by athletes in Olympic sports are made way before they actually make the team.

yup, just ask Ashley ;)
poor Bridgestone tires :shuffle:

Ashley got A LOT of other endorsements as well - I saw quite a few of them in her Instagram stories. Plus the Nike deal probably gave her a bit of performance bonuses during 2015-2017.

I know but I mentioned Bridgestone specifically because I lost count on how many times I saw that commercial on TV

"quintuple axel!" If only Ashley had that last night :D

Where's admin? This topic is getting out of hand

I'm sorry, did you report a post and I missed it? No? Then why would you expect an admin to magically appear? If other people hadn't reported it, I still wouldn't be here.

I am sure that the conversation that inspired this complaint is now done, but if it isn't, take it to PM. It's late, I'm tired, and US Nationals inspires way too much :drama:.

I wonder if the big sponsors would like go with Bradie and Mirai now that Gracie and Ashley are out of the team. I think that Mirai is so marketable with her story and 3a.

I bet if they had time they would, but the skaters have one month to go and will probably spend that entire month training.

On a side note, Yesterday there was an Ashley cut-out at the Bridgestone Tires table along with a Nathan one. Today there was only Nathan...

Wow.

The cutout was moved upstairs to the foodcourt where there is studio lighting for better photos, and causing less of a traffic jam (other skaters cut outs are there too). I didn't notice the Nathan one on the concourse during the first few events just Ashley.

Is "demoted to foodcourt" part of the skating lexicon now?

in the other forum one poster described Adam's LP as very "Sasshley" :D

Ashley is definitely adding a lot of new figure skating vocabulary

the image of a picture of an Ashley Wagner cardboard cutout in the dumpster of a Bridgestone Tires back alley is very strong in my mind right now

imagine that going viral

That image is hilarious LOL. Even though Ashley didn’t make the team, I don’t think that Bridgestone sponsorship was entirely a wash for the company because it gave us that glorious quintuple axel commercial haha. I can’t imagine anyone else pulling off that line the way she did

This weekend has proven what a crap shoot skating can be at times. One simply cannot predict performances based on 'body of work' and 'previous competitive experience' until the athletes have actually skated.

Like Dick Button used to say when he commentated, Nationals is the hardest event of the season for so many reasons.

Nothing against Adam and Jason, but it reminds me of when Liam Firus 'stepped down' so that Nam Nguyen could help Team Canada get three spots for 2017.

Yes, at that point, Nam was fifth in the world and the Canadian Champion in 2015. But he was 4th at Canadians in 2016 to Liam's 2nd.

The punchline was that Nam bombed in Boston and didn't even make the free skate.

Many US skaters have commented the hardest competition was Nationals in Olympic season. I remember someone (maybe Kwan) saying Nationals was tougher than the Olympics.

Yes ... as I said in the rest of my post ... "I'm about 60/40 on Ashley withdrawing from 4CC, but I'd rather Angela take Starr's place."

I hope not...I am totally in love with her La La Land and I want to see it again. It will be interesting to see how her PCS's stack up internationally.

Well, the Pairs Bronze and Pewter Medalists weren't part of the exhibition either. I'm not sure what her absence means. I think Ashley should do 4CC, skate like a bat out of hell, and take no prisoners. Since we haven't heard any confirmation of her turning down the assignment so far (and in the past, she has been very prompt at doing so), I'm thinking she is considering going. We'll probably know her decision within the next 48 hours.

It also seems like there's just fewer people in this exhibition in general. Usually they have a Synchro team (well, not that there are any high level synchro teams in the bay area due to USFSA's new short-sighted rules, and only one in the entire Pacific Coast section) or at least a local act. I think they teased that Kristi Yamaguchi was supposed to perform as well. I wouldn't read too much into Ashley not performing. USFSA probably just wanted more time to congratulate themselves in that Olympic champions segment.

On another note, if USFSA spent less time congratulating itself and its past champions, maybe they could provide better in-arena and on-TV analysis, particularly of the Olympic team selection.

ETA: Lisa McKinnon posted a picture of Ashley's La La Land dress. It's even prettier close up!

OT I know, but could you please explain what you mean about the new rules? :) I am a bit out of the loop when it comes to US synchro, but I did notice that synchro in the Pacific section has struggled a bit!
