Apparently they’re more than close friends which might explain the abrupt end to the partnership with Eliana. I’m not personally okay with 14 year olds dating 18 year olds.... but to each their own. She has since turned 15 and he 19. With everything going on with SafeSport/John Coughlin/ talk about male/female partnership imbalances.... I don’t know if passionate under age dating is the correct image to portray.

First of all, I was discussing the on-ice partnerships, not trying to trigger an OTT discussion about off-ice personal relationships. My reference to Ian being 'passionate' has to do with his on-ice approach to his skating with his new partner. We do not know all of the factors involved in Ian's split with Eliana, so it's counterproductive to engage in endless speculation. They have both moved on in a positive way, which is the main takeaway.

My saying that Ian & Katarina appear to be 'close friends,' is enough I think without the over-the-line editorializing that has ensued. It's none of our business regarding teenagers in this sport dating each other. Their parents' attentive supervision, guidance and counsel are the major rudder. From all evidence, these two young people appear to have a positive, healthy relationship and connection with each other on and off-the-ice. Crossing the line on public forums with negative comments about their ages, etc., due to recent events in this sport, is completely inappropriate. I see no reason for anyone ringing alarm bells of any kind.

Just because you enjoyed Ian's partnership with Eliana and you appear to feel for Eliana because of the abrupt split, it is no reason to side-eye and to talk negatively about Ian's and Katarina's friendship and subsequent partnership.

In this partnership it would be a girl who initiated it.

What are you trying to say?? As far as what any of us know, and based purely upon Katarina's Instagram, she asked Ian to take her to the prom recently. It was a very cute way of also announcing their new partnership. It's my impression that Ian is the one who broached the skating partnership question.

As we know, there are many instances in which skaters have a separate off-ice relationship with someone other than their on-ice partner. And there are plenty of cases where skaters are in relationships together while also being on-ice partners. Each situation is unique and personal. We should maybe take a step back from OTT speculation. Teenagers have a right to be in relationships of their own choosing, even as they engage in sports together. When there are underage differences, it is largely up to the parents to provide guidance and supervision. There is no basis nor reason to believe that either of these young people have imbalances in their behavior, relationships, personalities, characters or motivations.

... but an adult man should still be able to recognize that she is underage and say no

Again, such comments are inappropriately prying into personal matters that are none of our business. You don't know anything @deegee about the intimate details of their friendship.

I apologize to Ian & Katarina for anything I said earlier in this thread that may have triggered this off-base discussion about private matters. I wish you both good luck in your skating careers and in your individual life journeys! Your skating is a joy to watch and very inspirational.

ETA:
As today is Ian's birthday (his 19th), I wish him many blessings and a very happy day of celebration!

are you kidding me? i wasn't prying into anyone's personal relationship. i was responding to someone who was accusing an underage girl of initiating a relationship with an adult man. back off if your reading comprehension sucks so much.

Which part of the interview?

Apparently, the reference is to the TSL interview with Romain Haguenauer, posted in July. I don't watch many TSL episodes and interviews these days, particularly not in full, but I watched that one when it debuted. I was mesmerized by Romain Haguenauer. The interview for me was all about Romain's passion, sweetness, and his earnest delight and joy for the work he does in ice dance and for the people he collaborates with and for the young people he teaches, guides, mentors. A big thumbs up, again for Romain's genuine authenticity, humility and generosity, which came across so poignantly in this interview.

Someone already referenced the point in the interview at which Romain makes a reference to working on a project with Marie-France & Patch to establish a lasting legacy for what they have achieved, continuing well into the future. The precipitating question is posed at about 47:35 in a catty way by DL starting off with citing Zhulin's dismissive description of Gadbois style. Romain remains very calm and patient in his reaction, waiting until DL actually poses a real question regarding the technique taught at Gadbois. Romain answers by talking about his own training in ice dance ("the French style is a mixture of the old British style with the Russian style..."). Romain then takes his response to a revealing and informative level in discussing his view of how he and his compadres have melded European 'attack and modernity' with North American 'softness and aesthetic' into something unique and impactful. He briefly alludes to a 'legacy project' starting at about 49:15...

I too enjoyed hearing from Romain. Very professional and lovely person. I didn’t quite make the connection about the legacy project and then the announcement etc and so thanks for clearing that up.

Please let's not attack each other on here. The new season is starting and I personally am looking toward counting my blessings and trying to be grateful and positive about being able to watch and enjoy this sport. I'm appreciative of all the young people who participate and contribute to what is an extremely difficult sport to pursue and to master successfully.

I am not trying to be on a high horse, so I'm sorry if you feel that's my approach. I already apologized to Ian & Katarina for anything I said earlier that may have triggered this 'personal relationship' discussion trending in an over-the-line direction. These two young people are both teenagers, regardless of legal age differences. Your reply was obviously suggesting that the older party, who is legally considered to be an adult, should 'say no' to flirtatious advances by an underage teenager. I simply responded that I feel any such discussion is prying into personal matters that are none of our business. If you look at the entirety of my prior post on this topic, I replied to everyone who engaged in the discussion for whatever reason.

Best wishes to you, and I hope you enjoy the new season that is already upon us.

the legal age difference matters. at the point that ANYONE is an adult, they have a responsibility in any romantic relationship with a minor. my response had nothing to do with with the two people in question, but again as a response to the person who intimated that the minor in the relationship may have been the person in the wrong.

IMHO, this is not a point of discussion or debate for this thread. If you want to discuss this in general terms, perhaps an appropriate thread topic should be started. Since the person you responded to was not talking in general terms, your response especially in the way it was phrased, made no separate distinction that indicated you were speaking generally. Thank you.

There is no wrong here.

^^ I don't think the subject is a laughing matter, but to each their own. My point is, the topic doesn't belong in this thread in connection with specific skaters and their personal lives.

I think the only reason why I commented was because of the public image being portrayed. Not necessarily specific to the two individuals mentioned. There’s an entire thread regarding this topic here on FS universe under the John Coughlin case. The public is watching US figure skating, and watching their response post John Coughlin, etc. And if you know about the John Coughlin case it was regarding him and his younger partner. Minors cannot consent. Parents being “okay” withsuch a relationship or encouraging it doesn’t mean it’s okay. Plus laws are different across state lines. So, USFS should be discouraging illegal or questionable relationships, especially when they are so public and so well-known/flaunted. So, you are right in that teens do date. Legal adults do date minors. But the standard is being raised now for USFS members, and rightfully so. My point isn’t specific to anyone in particular, but USFS should be requiring a certain ethical standard for its members, especially members of team USA.

Um . . . you posted a comment in the trash can. You didn't post any links/evidence/or comments from the skaters. Nor any explanation of where you heard about such a relationship. Nothing was known on this board at all before you posted it. I'm just saying that from our perspective, at the moment, it is a hearsay rumor & therefore doesn't exactly qualify as "so public and well-known/flaunted."

If it is a press conference, I imagine it will be about someone joining, someone leaving or both perhaps?:shuffle:

The point of my post was meant to be generalized - coaches and other skaters/parents know when something inappropriate is going on. Especially when it’s broadcasted over social media. USFS should be keeping a close eye on any potentially inappropriate or illegal relationships among members, because the public believes its USFS’s job to keep a certain “culture” and practices in check. Otherwise.... we can all continue to turn a blind eye and watch our sport go down the toilet. I’m not going to continue writing about what’s so obviously right and wrong.

^^ The problem is that your post was not generalized. It cited two specific young skaters regarding personal matters that are none of our business. Their young friendship is their business and their parents' business, and we should respect their privacy. They are close friends and skating partners. I'm not sure what you think has been broadcast over social media that you think is inappropriate. The best thing is to check your own thinking in regard to young people whom you have no direct connection with and no authority over. If any of us have something to offer as a suggestion for the sport, we can write to U.S. figure skating or volunteer our services and offer our thoughts and ideas to skating clubs in our local communities.

Let's move on, start a relevant new thread topic, or discuss on PM. Thank you.

See earlier posts. The Gadbois press conference is suspected to have something to do with a legacy project Romain Haguenauer briefly alluded to during a TSL interview in July. Although, of course, the conference could be about something else, or about the legacy project and other related matters. :)

you're really full of it.

The press conference thing was short and sweet - the recording is here if anyone wants to watch, but the sound isn't great - basically, the Gadbois group is turning itself into an academy, the Ice Academy of Montreal (aka IAM). The idea is to expand operations, offer a comprehensive training environment including things like off-ice and mental coaching, bring in more staff and reach out to offer seminars and courses in other locations. They're staying based at Gadbois for now but may expand to work at other rinks too. Wishing them the greatest of success with it! :)

They just keep getting bigger and bigger. They should have just named it Marie Universe.:D

I wonder how much bigger something like Gadbois can feasibly get?

I suppose they would need a constant feed of either elite talent into the school who have the financial backing for comprehensive training or alternatively a lot of kids whose parents are willing to pay for junior development. Particularly if they are solely doing ice dance and not singles or pairs. The key thing for them is to make sure by all means possible that P/C continue to train there for the rest of their competitive careers.

Although, the idea of doing travelling seminars does make a lot of sense. They could contract new coaching staff to do those under the brand name of the academy and it would have zero impact on the day to day of the actual training base. And then would also provide a solid line of work in the future when inevitably, the training fashion changes.

It's an interesting concept having one school more or less have an entire monopoly over ice dance training. Make hay while the sun shines, I guess!
