I know it takes a lot of time but I loved the clips and explanations. any chance you could do a full rescore of an event like GPF FD or RD or would you have to end up in witness protection?

Hearken back to Salt Lake City with the media (NBC/Canada) stirring the pot regarding the Pairs competition. All my non-skating friends and relatives were locked on the narrative of the evil Russians unfairly beating those sweet natured Canadians. I can see a similar issue if the unfair block judging is trumpeted when NBC’s favorites don’t win. I will have to explain over and over to them what’s happened and why.

Skating writer Rob Brodie published a column recently on the potentially serious implications of what's happening with ice dance right now. I think he raised some really good points ... In particular, that the sport has never really recovered from the 2002 Olympic scandal. And that another similar-level scandal could be just as damaging. I hope someone at the ISU is paying attention to all this.

What would people like the ISU to do, other than fix the competition so that their favorites win?

The rules are vague and open to interpretation. The scoring overvalues minutiae and provides false precision. Pretty much anything can be justified or debated. You can't rewrite the rules or come up with new interpretations of them in the middle of the Olympic season because skaters or the media don't like the results so far.

I'm yet to be convinced that all of this whining and complaining is about fair play. It seems to be an attempt to use media pressure to influence the judging in a biased direction.

Yes, it's exactly what happened with Bourne and Kraatz. Yes, the results were fixed. But Canada was also on maneuvers and guilty of cheating (as proven by Senft's recording). So the "bloc" went on the offensive and took B&K out early so that Anissina and Peizerat would get the bronze medal they deserved. Both sides were cheating. One outplayed the other. Right result, wrong way of getting to it.

I suspect something similar is going on this season. And will probably go on forever with ice dance, which is just not possible to quantify the way the other disciplines are.

maybe them finding out is the thing that needs to happen for real, impactful changes in figure skating culture that truly does hold the well-being and safety of the skaters over results/potential results.

I wish the media articles about dance judging focused on the issues with the how the dance rules are written and how problematic they are in terms of what kinds of skills they prioritize, rather than focus on which big named teams are apparently being "robbed." The fact that an ID team can earn massive GOE for a crowd-pleasing but relatively easy "sliding move" or other "choreo" elements in the FD and the ridiculousness of the the last 3 years of rhythm dance themes need way more scrutiny. The Skating Session has done a great job of showing real examples of where the judges appear to not be applying the rubrics when it comes to assigning GEO but, unfortunately, I don't think most sports journalists are capable of doing the same.

I would like to think so. Sometimes scandals flare up and die away, but sometimes they do lead to change.
