Most of those people in that photo are World and/or Olympic champions.
Pro skating was on fire in the 90s, it was on TV quite a lot during the season, way more than amateur competitions. Now we could caption it Marina Zueva pre-ice dance sellout with her son/Meryl Davis's fiance, Anthony Ponomarenko's future parents, and a bunch of middle-aged people who used to be on TV.

The Olympics is the ultimate goal for most skaters. The others are nice, but the OGM is the biggest prize. Otherwise, Med would have been just thrilled with her OSM. And Savchenko with her two bronze. And Slutskaya wouldn't have dropped her bronze in the trash.
