I finally saw Moana, Zootopia, and Secret Life of Pets today (we did an animated marathon with some friends because we needed something light-hearted today). I can see why Zootopia swept all the awards. It was clearly the best of the three, and I seriously loved the themes of the movie. This is one franchise I would not mind seeing sequels of and exploring that world and characters.

I enjoyed Moana and Secret Life of Pets (to a lesser extent) as well. I think Moana could have been a lot better than it was (I think a lot of the epiphanies were unearned and some plot points were rushed), but it has all the potential in the world and I think "How Far I'll Go" was clearly the best song nominated for the Best Song Oscar last year and I never understood why people liked the "City of Stars" from La La Land so much. Secret Life of Pets I felt met the goal they were going for. It was cute, and at times funny, but that was about it. I did love seeing an animated NYC.

I watched Now You See Me 2 tonight. Was into it to it at first. But then took a pee break. Then checked email. Then played candy crush for the second half and just listened to the fight scenes. I found the tone so much like the original that I thought I might be watching the first one all over again. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for a movie tonight. I'm just not dying for part three to come out... :slinkaway

Just saw Spider-Man Homecoming and it was awesome!!! I'd give it a 8.0/10 and say it was easily the best Spider-Man movie I have ever seen. There are a few surprises in the movie that are definitely worth watching.

SPOILERS:
.
.
.
1) Zendaya is not in the movie as much as I would like but there is no doubt that she is Spidey's future love interest "MJ". There is one scene where she tells Peter "Just kidding! I don't care where you go" but it is clear from the expression on her face after he leaves that she does.
2) I think what Toomes said to Spidey about "they don't care about the little guy" really hit home. And part of the reason he prefers to be "closer to the ground".
3) What's with Happy's line about "Specs for Cap's new shield"?! Ain't Captain America in hiding in Wakanda because he is now a fugitive?!

Hmmm...

If Zendaya's character is "MJ" then it seems like it's a wink to Mary Jane but it looks like Mary Jane Watson is not going to be in this series at all. I'm a bit disappointed because I liked her in the cartoons and liked that out of all people she ended up being Peter's wife.

I had a chance to watch the silent classic,"The White Sister"(1923) with Ronald Colman and Lillian Gish, on TCM last night.
http://www.tcm.com/this-month/article/235452|0/The-White-Sister.html

Ronald Colman is the TCM "Star of the Month".

The movie was absorbing; and not overacted, as so many silent films are.
It was a privilege to see the work of both leads; and well worth my time.

Too bad silent movies aren't en vogue anymore. Medvedeva would be a great silent film actress with the training she's getting now. ;)

The only silent film I have seen is 'The Artist' :)

You know, that's a good topic to have. How many silent films have any of us seen? Were there any that you would recommend here? The last silent film I saw was The Passion of Joan of Arc which was pretty amazing, but I saw it many years ago.

I also liked Zootopia, & was entertained by Moana, but as a pet lover I was expecting to really like Secret Life of Pets even more. It was so disappointing when I finally saw it because they totally lost control of the movie. Animation filmmakers today have the most creative opportunities ever available at their fingertips & they wasted this one with the badly written story. They could have made a top quality movie by having the animals spend the day at home doing completely hilarious & creative but everyday things around the house. Just thinking about it over coffee I made a list of enough for a first film & two sequels. Instead they took it in the other direction & contributed yet again to our short attention span requiring non-stop action over cleverness & plot. Boo. One star.

I haven't seen Spider Man, but I did see Tom Holland the other day in The Lost City of Z. It was a WAY better movie than I expected. IN fact, I think it deserves to be considered for quite a few Oscars next year. Charlie Hunnam for best actor. The director should get a nod and maybe the screen writer as well. Maybe cinematography as it is a beautiful film to watch. Lots of deserving supporting acting nods including Sienna Miller and Robert Pattinson. Highly recommended movie!!

City if Z is on my must watch list. I was waiting to finish reading the book first but I may just see the movie now and finish the book later. The first part of the book reminded me of the book 'River of doubt'- about Teddy Roosevelt's trip to Brazil. I wish someone would make a movie based on that book. It's fascinating.

I saw 'The Big Sick' last night. Really enjoyed it. Based on actual events for Kumal Najiani and his now wife - some changes. Lovely love story, with culture clashes. He is Pakistani and his parents wanted an arranged marriage for him but he meets a girl. Zoe Kazan is just adorable. Both sets of parents were great. Highly recommend.
I did not know who Kumal was until I saw him at the Washington Press Corp event a few months ago. He is really funny and what a bright future he has!

Finally saw 'Wonder Woman' today. I really liked it. Good movie, very enjoyable popcorn movie. Good female roles!
I do appreciate how Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright, both over the age of 50 - really kicked ass!!!
Gal Gadot is such a movie star! I am growing an appreciation for Chris Pine. He is good in Star Trek. Then I saw Hell or High Water and now this - he is very charming and a reliable guy for this kind of part.

I saw A Quiet Passion this afternoon. It is about the poet Emily Dickinson.

Stars Cynthia Nixon and Jennifer Ehle. A good movie but I know is not for everyone. Very slow moving and also quite high brow in the language. Nothing is straight forward. The performances are very good though. Although there was one scene that I could picture that there would have been a few takes because they might have had a hard time keeping a straight face.

Watched 'The Founder' last night on DVD. I had missed it in the threaters. It was pretty good, after a rather slow start.

I didn't see in the movie when the two golden arches came together to form the 'M'. May be it was in the movie but I missed it?

I was pretty excited when they showed that in the beginning only the McDonald's in Phoenix had those two golden arches and they showed Kroc driving down I-17 South (to Phoenix). I think this was in the 1940s or 50s. While I enjoyed learning about the history of McDonald's, I felt really bad for the two 'original' McDonalds- the two brothers who started the fast food restaurant in San Bernardino. Michael Keaton was very good in the title role, but in the end his character seemed like just another rich guy. How could he flat out tell his wife that he wanted a divorce, after she had supported him through the years? She was not as ambitious as him or his second wife, but she deserved to get a share of McDonalds in that divorce settlement. The brothers at least got 1.35 million each.

We saw a Coppola double feature this weekend. The Beguiled directed by Sofia Coppola is a remake of a movie of a book. I saw the original with Clint Eastwood on the big screen. Colin Farrell plays Eastwood's role of the injured Union soldier in rural VA during the Civil War. He is found by a young girl who is out foraging in the forest & taken back to her isolated boarding school run by Nicole Kidman (headmistress) & Kirsten Dunst (teacher). They tend to his injuries & while he heals he pursues various relationships with the women & girls as he tries to stay at the school rather than return to the war. The limited color palette is beautiful & the movie is exquisitely filmed, although there are many absolutely gorgeous shots staged through trees that look more like a setting in LA than VA. The circular story focuses on the view of the women & girls rather than the manipulative soldier (like the original). The little girl who finds the soldier is as compelling as Kidman, Dunst & Fanning. I could watch this one a couple more times.

Paris Can Wait was directed by Eleanor Coppola. Diane Lane (one of my "must-sees") is nursing a midlife crisis & takes a road trip from Cannes to Paris with a business partner of her producer husband (Alec Baldwin). It had way too much eating & wine drinking (& never ending discussion of both) for me. Also an overabundance of stop & smell the roses lessons for the over 40 crowd that had to multitask as educational cultural experiences. Goodness knows we can't just watch the leaves rustle in the wind. Still it is a pleasant movie & I give Diane Lane a plus for wearing comfortable shoes & clothes for 90% of it.

I saw the trailer for Paris Can Wait on the weekend. I was wondering what it was like. The trailer made it look good.

Just saw Spider-Man: The Homecoming. Loved it! But my caveat is that I never liked the Spider-Man character in other movies and comics. So all the changes they made that people hated were welcome to me.

Finally saw La La Land. Meh. I side with those who found it self-indulgent.
