Advice please: I promised to take my dad to see Dunkirk. Should we do IMAX? We never do, but some critics and early viewers are saying that you should for this movie. For those of you who do go to IMAX, is there really that much of a difference?

I have never (and would never) go to see a movie in IMAX if it weren't for having a friend who believes IMAX is far superior to the 2-D showing of a movie. Personally, I think it's a waste of money. I think it depends on your previous viewings in IMAX. If you think what you saw could never compare to a normal screening of the same movie, then shill out the extra bucks. Otherwise, save your cash for snacks to buy at the dollar store to sneak into the theatre when you see the 2-D version. :D

I want to see Dunkirk.

I am waiting for Al Gore's sequel to The inconvenient truth. I thought it was scheduled for a July release.

July 28th. :)

I saw 'Baby Driver'. Fun popcorn summer movie. Loved the music. Great cast - Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx and Jon Hamm! Ansel Elgort - he is only 23 -what a future. The car scenes were cool. I liked the story, and the ending was different, but worked with the person you learn Baby is.
Before the movie in the previews - Edgar Wright said he made the movie to be seen in the theatre - and he is correct. Certain movies can not be seen at home.

About to see Baby Driver. Looking forward to it.

ETA - and just saw it. Really good. Loved the soundtrack and the way the sounds around him fitted in with the music. And good performances too. The opening driving scene was some of the best stunt driving I have seen in a movie.

I forgot to mention the music - one of the best use of soundtrack for a movie. Even things like the name of Lily James' character the the songs with her name. Very well thought out. It is $20 on iTunes - with 30 songs. Will have to purchase. The editing was very good in this movie too. Well crafted and well acted and a good storyline. Usually a movie is missing one of these.

My favorite LOL moment - the reveal of the masks with Jamie Foxx and crew. Too funny.

Two movies I watched recently ended up being background filler while I did other stuff. One I had seen years before, but the other was quite new, so I was surprised the new one didn't capture my attention enough so that I did not start to focus on other things.

Now You See Me 2 is the culprit. And I liked the first movie. Not sure why this one didn't grab my attention. Maybe I had too much stuff to do around home. The movie looked good, but I guess it just seemed too much like the first one. Didn't really see a point for a sequel, maybe the first one made a lot of money?

The other movie was The Sixth Sense. I was curious to watch it again now that we all know what the big spoiler is. I admit I didn't give this one much attention as Now You See Me 2 and I was probably now a bit in the habit of ignoring what I was watching until something big grabbed me. For the Sixth Sense, it wasn't the big reveal, but instead when Haley Joel Osmont talks to Toni Collette about her grandmother. That's such a perfect scene, from the writing to the acting to the editing. If you don't cry watching that scene, then check for a pulse!

Tonight I watched Lila and Eve (2015) and I'm still processing how much it took me by surprise. This is one of those movies that got limited release, didn't do well with the critics and made just under $40,000 at the box office. Well, everybody got it wrong because this movie is going to stay with me for a while (in a good way!!). From what I remember of the trailer, it seemed to be presented as a modern-day female version of an old Charles Bronson movie where he takes the law into his own hands. And in a way, that's what this movie is, but it's much more than that and it has much more depth to it. My main draw to this movie was the pairing of Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez, which seemed fairly random to me. Although I just saw on wikipedia that this is their second movie together, after 1998's Out of Sight. This movie is tough to talk about in that it's something you need to talk about with friends after seeing it together. I don't even want to put comments in a spoiler for fear you might read something that you shouldn't before seeing it. I should have known this movie would have more depth than the trailer led me to believe because off the top of my head, I don't remember Viola Davis being in any movie that isn't worth seeing on at least some level. And most of her movies are worth seeing on pretty much every level. Anyway, if you think maybe that critics, the movie company and audiences are all WRONG about this movie, I hope you'll give it a chance. :)

Saw Dunkirk tonight. Very very good and very intense. It really does not let up from the start to the end. The soundtrack is designed to create tension and highlight the danger of the situations the people are in. The timelines jump around so you will get the same moment in time but from a different person's perspective. Would not be surprised if it is an Oscar contender next year.

Funny thing was after buying my ticket and having dinner, checked my email and found I got offered a free ticket with my movie club membership to see Atomic Blonde next Thursday. So have my ticket for that next week. :)

I loved it too but won't pay to see twice. Dunkirk is a war movie minus any large battle scenes. It's basically a movie about the desperation and mental anguish of the soldiers waiting on the beach and those wishing to rescue them. So it may not be everyone's cup of tea. 7/10

ETA:
Soldiers from Canada, Belgium, Poland and the Netherlands were also on that beach. Being Canadian I am a bit disappointed Canadian soldiers did not get a mention.

Via AMC I got an offer for free passes to a Preview for this past Wed. There was a disclaimer that they overbook.
Due to work constraints, we got to the theatre about 35 min before the showing. It was already full, but they gave us 2 free passes for Atomic Blonde - good Jul 31-Aug 3, which we can use.
We ended up seeing Baby Driver - I wrote about earlier - so ended up being a good night, and still have free passes.
I really hope Atomic Blonde is good. I like Theron and McAvoy, and love movies where women kick ass.

Movie news. :)

Felicity Jones to Star As Supreme Court Justice
https://www.fandango.com/movie-news/movie-news-felicity-jones-to-star-as-supreme-court-justice-752470

Felicity Jones will star as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in On the Basis of Sex. Natalie Portman had previously been touted for the role. The movie will focus on Ginsburg and her continuing fight for equal rights over the years. Mimi Leder (Deep Impact) will direct, with production aiming to get underway in September.

Paramount Pushes ‘Cloverfield Movie’ Back to 2018

While the new movie has now had three potential release dates, it sounds like it’s going to be worth the wait. Not only does it sound like they’re taking the story (once again) in a completely new direction, but talk about a United Nations of a cast:

David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw [Belle, Beyond The Lights], Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, The Night Manager], Daniel Brühl, and Chris O’Dowd are starring.

New 'Spider-Man' Movie Profanity Criticized by Faith-Based Group

They counted 30 and one half swear words. And stated that no superhero movie with more than 25 swear words has cracked the all-time Top 100 movie list (adjusted to inflation). Holy crud!

Charlie Sheen’s ‘9/11’ Movie Trailer Blasted as ‘Offensive,’ ‘Extremely Tasteless’ (Video)

Reading this article, I felt confused. Then as I watched the trailer, the further along I got, I started to think...this is a trailer made by somebody piecing together pieces of these actors previous films to make it look like a new movie. But nope, it's actually a movie coming out on September 8th. Along with Sheen, the movie stars Whoopi Goldberg, Gina Gershon, Bruce Davison, Jacqueline Bisset and Luis Guzman.

The box office is very interesting this weekend. First Dunkirk is doing very well and is expected to make about $51m this weekend with Girls Trip second with an expected take of $28m. Spider-Man and War for the Planet of the Apes are both expected to make around $20m while Valerian is set to be North America's biggest flop this year. We will have to wait and see if Valerian will be saved by foreign box office sales. But for me the biggest surprise is Girl's Trip because I have not even heard of this movie before it opened this week and have not seen a trailer either. So with an estimated earnings this weekend of $28m it has made back it's budget already. :cheer2:

I saw Alien Covenant the other day and it was so good! I found Katherine Waterston's character to be annoying when their exploration began, but that quickly changed. Thought she was as good as Michael Fassbender in this. Well, maybe not THAT good, but still worthy of being on the same screen as him. Demián Bichir was under-used, maybe Billy Crudup as well. My only qualm with the movie was that standard thing of space explorers who FREAK THE F*** OUT when anything out of the ordinary happens. You've been handpicked to be the best of the best and when the heat is on, you start whining endlessly or run away freaking out when others lives depend on you? I'd prefer to see level-headed people deal with the things that they encounter and just let those things build until we see these strong people start to break because the pressure just keeps building until even these tough people start to come loose. THAT would make for a much scarier/entertaining movie.

My family I were talking about our favorite Disney villains, and after much consideration, I have to say Yzma from Emperor's New Groove is by far my favorite. She's such a diva and yet so incompetent at being a villain that I just end up loving her. Plus with Kronk by her side, how can you not love her?

Eartha Kitt deserved every accolade that came her way.

I'm so glad everyone has mentioned the music for Baby Driver. It stood out to me and ever since I posted about the movie, I've kept thinking about how I forgot to mention the music. First, I liked that they chose so many songs that I hadn't heard before...but really liked. I'm tired of soundtracks being comprised of tunes we've seen and heard in so many movies before. Such a lack of originality on the part of the filmmaker. I thought the choice of each song for each moment in the movie worked really well. And when a familiar song was chosen, it fit so well with the moment. Loved the moments of Elgort's movement during various songs as well. I just checked wikipedia to read up on his background as I had seen stills of him doing ballet jumps, but never did know what exactly his background as a dancer was. Wikipedia says nothin...

And nothing through google, but it's clear from this video that he can dance:

Watch Ansel Elgort Dance Through the Decades at His Teen Vogue Cover Shoot

And he has released about 10 music singles, so he can sing too (although some will say that his singing is the least of his talents). I really hope we get to see him in a musical soon. :kickass:

The thing I really love about the soundtrack in Baby Driver, even though the songs are mostly songs we've heard before, is that they are used so well I didn't even think about it. The songs are used like the movie is a musical and it's so awesome.

How To Succed In Business Without Really Trying (1966) is a recent viewing. Michelle Lee and the costuming were the highlights for me. The women are all decked out in a paint set of colours for their office attire. On occasions the sets are done up just as colourfully. But Michelle Lee stole the movie in my opinion even though her role is definitely a supporting one. She just lights up every scene she is in. And her singing is so good! I only know her from Knots Landing. Why she wasn't a big movie star is beyond me. I enjoyed her much more than Robert Morse who played the lead character. While I liked the movie well enough, I can't remember any of the songs from it. So maybe one to see only if you're a diehard 60s movie lover.

ETA: I checked out the soundtrack info and this one stands out: I Believe In You...

I love How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. It's a bit different from the stage version, which was even more satirical and mean-spirited of American office culture/politics. I love the song "Brotherhood of Man", "Well, It's Been a Long Day", "A Secretary is Not a Toy", and "I Believe in You". I think a lot of it is still relevant today. One of my favorite lines was when the mistress character who got the job at the company is complaining to her lover aka the President of the company about how at least when she was a showgirl, when men gawked/made comments to her they tipped her unlike at the office.

It's one of nine musicals that won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama since the prize was given for theatrical works in 1918.
