Hikers in the area saw the obviously distressed helicopter plummet to the ground.

Luckily we have had a lot of rain ( for California) so the fire dept should be able to contain the blaze.

ESPN is reporting that Kobe and Gianna were on their way to a youth basketball game. One of her teammates and another parent were also on board.

I just saw a picture on the news with Kobe's photo and the years 1978 - 2020. My television was on mute at the time, so I didn't hear any details. My jaw dropped in shock. I couldn't wrap my head around it.

I hope God gives strength to Kobe's wife and surviving daughters, his family, friends and fans around the world. This is so hard to take in. Heartbreaking. No words.

Besides the deaths Kobe's youngest daughter is less than a year old. Tragic.

This is so terrible. I didn't really follow basketball much during Kobe's legendary arc through the sport, but I heard about and witnessed some of his exploits and his championship mettle, and how he came back from adversity. The loss is so huge. And with the press conference indicating it was nine people who died, that's overwhelming. They were professional in not bandying names about until the coroner's work is done.

Gianna was the second daughter. This is so incredibly sad.

^^ That's always horrible. When my mother died, some relatives who found out went straight to Facebook lamenting without thinking of the fact that some close family members hadn't been directly informed yet. The vagaries of social media and lack of thoughtful consideration.

NBC went to the news conference just as Nathan took the ice. The news conference didn't last long and when they returned to the skating, Jason had just completed his program. NBC then showed a full clip of Nathan's performance. I wasn't bothered by the interruption at all, because we were repeatedly warned in plenty of time that the interruption would happen. Viewers who could, had the opportunity to switch to NBCSN. The authorities were trying to provide what information they could at this time, since there are so many questions. Obviously, the investigation of the crash will go on for some time to determine what happened.

We can always check out videos of the final skaters' performances (or archived stream on NBC Gold). We only really missed Jason's performance, and getting to see Nathan's fp in real time.

I recall many years ago when Johnny Carson passed away. The 2005 U.S. National championships event was interrupted, without warning. I was pissed, especially since Carson as an older person passing, wasn't exactly an emergency or an accidental happenstance, even though it signaled the passing of a generation and it was noteworthy. I thought they could have waited until after the regularly scheduled event was over in that instance to spend time reflecting on Carson's life and career.

In this instance, the news had already leaked about Kobe (and he was in the prime of his life, and this was a sudden tragedy). The authorities simply wished to respond to inquiries while not going into detail about names until the coroner's confirmation and notification of family members.

I also remember that Toller Cranston passed away in 2015 around the time of Canadian and U.S. Nationals, the year Jason Brown won the men's championship and AdaRipp crafted his breakout performance.

This is so heartbreaking! As an L.A. native - he is so revered here. I keep thinking about his daughter though and how young she was - so sad. Kobe will be remembered forever. My prayers go out to his family - what a tragic loss!!

Well they were on top of "the scoop" but as others said---the family....Years ago a news crew was johnny-on-the-spot at a horrible car wreck and they filmed the car tag. The wreck happened around 11 am, made the noon news and by 12:15 a sobbing grandmother called us at 911 certain that it was her granddaughter 's car. It was and she had died on the scene though we told her we had no idea who was involved. That stuck with me so I know it was not important that I know about Kobe before those who loved him.
