Kwan - 5.8 / 6.0 This might be my favorite short program of any lady ever. LeAnn Miller just created perfection in this program, and it felt like an exhibition.

Kopac - 4.5 / 5.1 I like this program on her, it's a little retro and fun and so she doesn't have to stretch or be precise.

Kwiatkowski - 5.4 / 5.6 That girl did her job. The program was choreographed well to highlight her abilities. I love the costume, and even the green eyeshadow. Tonia was always packaged from head to toe.

Ruh - 4.5 / 5.5 I took deductions on the jumps, but added bonus points for those amazing spins. The way she moves across the ice is #goals.

Liashenko - 5.5 / 5.5 Good job for her. This program seems so empty compared with the other top ladies. This would not have done well under COP.

Hubert - 5.7 / 5.8 This program is just beautiful. Love the ending of the 2A end, and beautifully choreographed and skated. This program would have done well under COP.

In retrospect, I probably would've had Anna above Laetitia if Anna had skated later. Damn I was mean to Butyrskaya. I probably would've had her higher if she had skated later.

Yes, in the SP the tiebreaker is the required elements (first) score.

And judge can tie skaters, ie, giving them identical scores. I don't think it was exactly encouraged, but it happened occasionally in the 6.0 era, from what I remember.

They weren't supposed to. But in a large event it was not unknown for the occasional judge to lose track of what scores they'd already given to 20+ previous skaters.

Technical score is the tiebreaker in the short.

And I think it's frowned upon to tie skaters in the ordinal, but it's not forbidden. I did correct my marks as I accidentally tied Kopac and Arakawa.

I have had a rough glance over some of the placements given by other posters and would like to explain some of my decisions:

• Liashenko had the most complete program and detailed choreography aside from Kwan and I rewarded her for it.
• Rechnio had deductions on the loop and flying camel that I placed her behind Liashenko.
• Carter was one of the fastest skaters on the night and didn't pump like Lavrenchuk or others. Her only mistake was popping the lutz. I placed Sokolova ahead because she at least rotated the lutz and actually had very solid elements that night.
• I hit Hubert hard for having no steps before the flip and for the lack of substance in her step and spiral sequences. The spins were also subpar.
• I hit Lavrenchuk and Vorobieva hard on the second mark and the latter also on the URs.

Here were my marks in skate order. I didn't give anyone above a 5.2 for tech, mostly because that's what I gave Malinina and felt (justifiably) that she was the best on tech, though I think even a 4.5 was generous for presentation given how stiff, cautious, and robotic she was.

I thought about putting Hubert first - the program was so interesting and different, but the "creative" approaches to the spiral sequence and footwork were perhaps a bit too creative. I still thought she had the best presentation of the day. Kwan was tight and seemed slightly off her music to me.

I am not sure what happened with Liashenko?!?! I thought the flip was two-footed (couldn't tell), but even still, I'm not sure how she ended up so low.

I am generally not a fan of Tonia Kwiakowski, but her conditioning and presentation here (reductive program aside) seemed to be the best it ever was.

I love Slutskaya, but wow, was she gifted. She was just going through the motions.

I am generally not a fan of Tonia Kwiakowski, but her conditioning and presentation here (reductive program aside) seemed to be the best it ever was.

I didn't remember her 1998 Worlds SP from when I had seen it that year, but I was really impressed watching it yesterday. I agree with your comment because I think it's the best presentation I ever saw her put out.

To go back to the presentation mark requirements, I feel Tonia conformed to the music better than almost anyone, the program was harmonious as a whole, she varied her speed, she showed sureness in time to the music, her carriage and style were nice, it was original (especially for her standards), and she expressed the character of the music better than I thought she was capable of. The only point I didn't note-because I was so focused on so many others and it can be hard with just a video anyway-was her utilization of the ice surface, but taking into account what I was supposed to judge on the second mark, Tonia was a very pleasant surprise, and I think she did what I just described better than most of the field on that night.

All in all, I can say this was a very challenging competition to judge – so many good skaters, twice as many splats. I can now sympathize much better with figure skating judges and understand why they are so prone to bias. So happy that the hell of the 6.0 system and its BS ordinals are gone. Wish I could have also given deductions for the obnoxious Eurosport commentary.
