Kwan - 5.8 / 6.0 This might be my favorite short program of any lady ever. LeAnn Miller just created perfection in this program, and it felt like an exhibition.

Kopac - 4.5 / 5.1 I like this program on her, it's a little retro and fun and so she doesn't have to stretch or be precise.

Kwiatkowski - 5.4 / 5.6 That girl did her job. The program was choreographed well to highlight her abilities. I love the costume, and even the green eyeshadow. Tonia was always packaged from head to toe.

Ruh - 4.5 / 5.5 I took deductions on the jumps, but added bonus points for those amazing spins. The way she moves across the ice is #goals.

Liashenko - 5.5 / 5.5 Good job for her. This program seems so empty compared with the other top ladies. This would not have done well under COP.

Hubert - 5.7 / 5.8 This program is just beautiful. Love the ending of the 2A end, and beautifully choreographed and skated. This program would have done well under COP.

:mitchell: Lori Nichol!!!

(But otherwise, I'm in support of your 6.0, spoiler alert for when my marks come out)

Wow, I just looked at the official standings and see Butyrskaya in 5th. Gotta say I'm pretty shocked. I mean, I like her too, but she did a whole lot of nothing out there technically and her performance quality wasn't THAT amazing (IMHO, of course).

By the way, for the judges who scored live today, I would REALLY appreciate it if you could compile your scores in one post like @skateboy did above. It will help me out compiling all the scores. Thanks!

I even made a spreadsheet so I could just sort. That's how much of a nerd I am.

In retrospect, I probably would've had Anna above Laetitia if Anna had skated later. Damn I was mean to Butyrskaya. I probably would've had her higher if she had skated later.

I have to repeat skateboy's question for all, as it's been so long: in 1998 in a short program, which mark was the tiebreaker, the first or the second?

Also, I thought judges couldn't give identical marks for skaters as skateboy did (ex. Kwiatkowski and Slutskaya both at 5.2, 5.6). Could they or not? Again, it's been awhile.

Yes, in the SP the tiebreaker is the required elements (first) score.

And judge can tie skaters, ie, giving them identical scores. I don't think it was exactly encouraged, but it happened occasionally in the 6.0 era, from what I remember.

First.

Always, in short programs.

They weren't supposed to. But in a large event it was not unknown for the occasional judge to lose track of what scores they'd already given to 20+ previous skaters.

I thought Butyrskaya was one of the only skaters (along with Kwan) who had an interesting program and I tried to reward her for it, but while still hitting her on the technical.

I even made a spreadsheet so I could just sort. That's how much of a nerd I am.

Spreadsheets for the win! I sent mine to alchemy void in Excel!

Technical score is the tiebreaker in the short.

And I think it's frowned upon to tie skaters in the ordinal, but it's not forbidden. I did correct my marks as I accidentally tied Kopac and Arakawa.

For anyone interested, here was my take (the first time I've ever done something like this):

1. Kwan 5.7/5.8 (11.5)
2. Malinina 5.8/5.6 (11.4)
3. Rechnio 5.7/5.7 (11.4)
4. Hubert 5.6/5.6 (11.2)
5. Kwiatkowski 5.4/5.8 (11.2)
6. Butyrskaya 5.3/5.9 (11.2) [my one case of cheating ;) I had her at 5.3/5.8 last night just to "leave room"/escape the wrath of people commenting on her technical shortcomings... but when I woke up to do the final 8 or so skaters today, I realized she really met the criteria of the 6.0 system and she deserved to be rewarded in comparison to the field)
7. Liashenko 5.6/5.5 (11.1)
8. Slutskaya 5.4/5.6 (11.0)
9. Sokolova 5.2/5.7 (10.9)
10 Fontana 5.2/5.6 (10.8)
11 Vorobieva 5.4/5.2 (10.6)
12 Gusmeroli 5.3/5.3 (10.6)
13 Lavrenchuk 5.2/5.4 (10.6)
14 Carter 5.1/5.3 (10.4)
15 Kulovana 4.8/5.6 (10.4)
16 Poth 5.1/5.2 (10.3)
17 Paurova 5.0/5.3 (10.3)
18 Szewczenko 5.1/5.1 (10.2)
19 Sebestyen 4.8/5.3 (10.2)
20 Ruh 4.6/5.5 (10.1)
21 Derochie 5.1/4.9 (10.0)
22 Marie-Pierre Leray 5.0/5.0 (10.0)
23 Shizuka Arakawa 4.8/5.1 (9.9)
24 Mojca Kopac 4.7/5.0 (9.7)

One of the only changes in retrospect would be to put Derochie around 5.1/4.7.

Take care, everyone!

Wait.

Derochie skated to music called "Angela's Angels"? 😍

I meant to comment on this earlier, but did you also catch that it was composed by Mark Militano? Best known for composing the music for Nancy Kerrigan's short programs.

Missed this live, but caught up watching, and can't wait for the FSU scoreboard!

Also, I have a confession: today I learned for the first time that Tanya Szewchenko and Tonia Kwiatkowski are two separate people. :shuffle:

(I thought I just kept forgetting whether she skated for Germany or America!)

My scores. I accidentally tied Gusmeroli and Butyrskaya, as well Soklova and Szewczenko. If I could revise I would have Gusmeroli at 5.2, 5.6, and 5.1, 5.4 for Sokolova, moving her up a spot.

1. Kwan 5.7 5.9
2. Rechnio 5.5 5.8
3. Hubert 5.4 5.8
4. Slutskaya 5.4 5.7
5. Kwiatkowski 5.3 5.5
6. Gusmeroli 5.1 5.6
7. Butyrskaya 5.1 5.6
8. Malinina 5.3 5.3
9. Vorobieva 5.2 5.4
10. Liashenko 5.1 5.5
11. Fontana 5.0 5.6
12. Paurova 5.2 5.2
13. Sokolova 5.0 5.4
14. Szewczenko 5.0 5.4
15. Carter 4.9 5.4
16. Lavrenchuk 5.1 5.1
17. Ruh 4.7 5.5
18. Kopac 4.9 5.3
19. Leray 4.9 5.2
20. Kulovana 4.6 5.4
21. Poth 4.8 5.0
22. Derochie 4.7 5.0
23. Sebestyen 4.6 4,8
24. Arakawa 4.4 4.9

In retrospect the only person I have question marks on is Liashenko and maybe Malinina. I might have under marked them, but it was consistent with me being nitpicky on spin centering.

I have had a rough glance over some of the placements given by other posters and would like to explain some of my decisions:
  • Liashenko had the most complete program and detailed choreography aside from Kwan and I rewarded her for it.
  • Rechnio had deductions on the loop and flying camel that I placed her behind Liashenko.
  • Carter was one of the fastest skaters on the night and didn't pump like Lavrenchuk or others. Her only mistake was popping the lutz. I placed Sokolova ahead because she at least rotated the lutz and actually had very solid elements that night.
  • I hit Hubert hard for having no steps before the flip and for the lack of substance in her step and spiral sequences. The spins were also subpar.
  • I hit Lavrenchuk and Vorobieva hard on the second mark and the latter also on the URs.

Here were my marks in skate order. I didn't give anyone above a 5.2 for tech, mostly because that's what I gave Malinina and felt (justifiably) that she was the best on tech, though I think even a 4.5 was generous for presentation given how stiff, cautious, and robotic she was.

I thought about putting Hubert first - the program was so interesting and different, but the "creative" approaches to the spiral sequence and footwork were perhaps a bit too creative. I still thought she had the best presentation of the day. Kwan was tight and seemed slightly off her music to me.

I am not sure what happened with Liashenko?!?! I thought the flip was two-footed (couldn't tell), but even still, I'm not sure how she ended up so low.

I am generally not a fan of Tonia Kwiakowski, but her conditioning and presentation here (reductive program aside) seemed to be the best it ever was.

I love Slutskaya, but wow, was she gifted. She was just going through the motions.

Gusmeroli
4.9 / 5.4 = 10.3 (7)

Malinina
5.2 / 4.5 = 9.7 (15)

Paurova
4.5 / 4.5 = 9.0 (16)

Carter
4.2 / 4.6 = 8.8 (21)

Butyrskaya
4.9 / 5.6 = 10.5 (5)

Lavrenchuk
4.8 / 5.3 = 10.1 (11)

Fontana
4.0 / 4.9 = 8.9 (18)

Derochie
3.4 / 4.2 = 7.6 (24)

Poth
4.6 / 4. 0 = 8.6 (19)

Sebestyen
3.8 / 4.8 = 8.6 (20)

Vorobieva
5.1 / 5.0 = 10.1 (10)

Kulovana
4.5 / 5.4 = 9.9 (14)

Rechnio
5.1 / 5.5 = 10.6 (3)

Slutskaya
5.0 / 5.4 = 10.4 (6)

Arakawa
4.0 / 4.3 = 8.3 (23)

Szewczenko
4.8 / 5.4 = 10.2 (9)

Leray
4.6 / 5.4 = 10.0 (13)

Sokolova
4.8 / 5.2 = 10.0 (12)

Kwan
5.2 / 5.7 = 10.9 (1)

Kopac
4.0 / 4.5 = 8.5 (22)

Kwiatkowski
4.8 / 5.5 = 10.3 (8)

Ruh
4.0 / 5.0 = 9.0 (17)

Liashenko
5.0 / 5.5 = 10.5 (4)

Hubert
5.1 / 5.8 = 10.9 (2)

I didn't remember her 1998 Worlds SP from when I had seen it that year, but I was really impressed watching it yesterday. I agree with your comment because I think it's the best presentation I ever saw her put out.

To go back to the presentation mark requirements, I feel Tonia conformed to the music better than almost anyone, the program was harmonious as a whole, she varied her speed, she showed sureness in time to the music, her carriage and style were nice, it was original (especially for her standards), and she expressed the character of the music better than I thought she was capable of. The only point I didn't note-because I was so focused on so many others and it can be hard with just a video anyway-was her utilization of the ice surface, but taking into account what I was supposed to judge on the second mark, Tonia was a very pleasant surprise, and I think she did what I just described better than most of the field on that night.

Finally finished watching the rest of the skaters in peace. Here is the complete list from me:

1. Michelle Kwan (5.8/5.9)
2. Anna Rechnio (5.7/5.7)
3. Tatiana Malinina (5.7/5.5)
4. Elena Liashenko (5.6/5.6)
5. Laetitia Hubert (5.5/5.5)
6. Irina Slutskaya (5.4/5.5) - how did I put her above Butyrskaya?
7. Mariya Butyrskaya (5.1/5.8)
8. Julia Lavrenchuk (5.3/5.5)
9. Tanja S. (5.1/5.7)
10. Elena Sokolova (5.2/5.5)
11. Vanessa Gusmeroli (5.0/5.6)
12. Julia Vorobieva (5.3/5.2)
13. Zuzana Paurova (5.3/5.1)
14. Tonia Kwiatkowski (5.0/5.4)
15. Lenka Kulovana (4.8/5.6)
16. Diana Poth (5.0/5.3)
17. MP Leray (4.9/5.4)
18. Julia Sebestyen (4.8/5.3) People seem to diss her and not a great performance by any means but I kind of liked the program :shuffle:
19. Lucinda Ruh (4.4/5.5)
20. Shizuka Arakawa (4.8/5.0)
21. Angela Derochie (4.7/4.9)
22. Mojka Kopac (4.6/4.9) TIED
23. Joanne Carter (4.6/4.9) TIED
24. Silvia Fontana (4.5/5.0)

All in all, I can say this was a very challenging competition to judge – so many good skaters, twice as many splats. I can now sympathize much better with figure skating judges and understand why they are so prone to bias. So happy that the hell of the 6.0 system and its BS ordinals are gone. Wish I could have also given deductions for the obnoxious Eurosport commentary.

ETA. I have adjusted the ranking based on the sum of grades given. Thank you so much @Tony Wheeler for pointing this out to me and for the help!
