Would Brasseur be a good partner for Charlie?

I just re-watched her FS from Canadian Nationals. Good twist and some lovely entrances/exits into the lifts, but everything else was very much a work in progress.

Well that's a shame that Brasseur & Bardei are no more as we only got to see them skate once. Or was it twice as I think maybe they did some random Quebec competition last fall.

Wonder if he'll stay in Canada or head back to Europe?!

The twist won’t be good with Charlie.

B/B were quite slow and she was very tentative going into the throws.

I don’t see her finding a guy as big/tall as him and she’s quite tall herself for a pairs girl. Also Bilodeau is about 4 years older than Bardei.

According to google, Brasseur is only 156cm? Or is that an outdated measurement? But at 190cm Bardei is a tall male partner. But I don't know, their lifts didn't look stable at all.

EDIT: looking at the video, she must be taller than 156cm by a little bit because she was not starkly shorter than Bardei who is very tall.

Which makes you think that it would not be a planned split to skate with Charlie because wouldn't that have been worked out in advance anyway?
there is a time and place for everything and the day of an international competition is not the time or place. They have had injuries and withdrew (in advance for some other competitions)so if another injury occurred at practice they could have been the straw for the split but I agree that if the split was directly due to one or the other wanting to switch partners it would have happened before this competition. This is sad. They are my favorite cdn pair team.

Disappointing for sure. I thought they had a ton of potential. Just goes to show how hard it is to find a partner. It’s not easy finding someone you get along with, have fun with, match physically and have similar skills. It’s tough putting partners together.

If the split is because of Justine wanting to team with Charlie, I actually think that that would be a bigger win for Charlie than skating with Lubov would be. When the S/B split happened, my first two thoughts were of Lubov and Justine, and that while splitting with Julianne for Lubov would be stupid (IMO - YMMV) if short-term international medals were what he wanted, Justine was probably the only pairs girl in Canada who might make it pay off for him in the end. Justine is a lot younger, has more possible potential for development both technically and artistically, and does not have a years-long problem with landing SBS triples. Whether it would be a smart choice for Justine would have to remain to be seen.

No. On all fronts.
Agree to disagree! :shuffle:

You can get tons of GOE on non-jump elements, but IMO, you can only go so far with a 27-year-old partner who has had a years-long history of very rarely landing SBS jumps in competition.

Would he likely have better short-term results with Lubov? Yes. But those short-term results would probably max out very quickly unless some miracle solved her jump problems, and at her age, they could probably only have a chance at the next Olympics before he would have to go partner-searching again if he wanted to continue beyond 2022.

I'm tired of hearing about Lubov's jumps but have at it if y'all must

Sui, Tarasova, Peng, Yu, Della Monica and most of the American pair girls among others miss sbs jumps on the regular. Lubov is not special in that regard.

All I can say is it takes more than the potential you see on the ice from a distance to make it in skating. I'm happy to take everything Lubov has to offer as a package and run with it, thanks.

The American pairs girls are not what anyone should be comparing themselves to if they want to be international medalists. When is the last time an American pair won a world medal, back in the Ina/Zimmerman days??

Sui and Tarasova may not be the most consistent with SBS jumps, but I'm fairly certain if you did a tracking of their last few seasons (not including this season for Sui, since she has been injured and out for most of the competitive season), they land their jumps more than 50% of the time. If you track Lubov's arguably most successful seasons with Dylan, she landed SBS triples maybe twice a season, probably 25% of the time maximum if you count one SBS triple in the SP and two attempts in the LP in each competition. That's not comparative to Tarasova and Sui in terms of missing jumps "on the regular". That is one of the reasons why Tarasova and Sui both have multiple world medals.

One can't just disregard Lubov's jump issues by saying that other female pairs skaters are also inconsistent jumpers. She wasn't just inconsistent; it was much more surprising when she did manage to land a triple jump than when she fell.

I understand valuing the other aspects she brings to the table, as there are a lot of them, but between that big issue and her age, I am never going to see her as a potential international medalist until I am proven otherwise. (Before someone brings up Aliona Savchenko's age, I just want to say that Aliona already had substantial international success with other partners before embarking on a partnership with Bruno in her "old age", and Aliona Savchenko is also some kind of death-defying miraculous super hero, and therefore cannot be used as a fair comparison in my books. :D)

The other girls being mentioned can typically be counted on to land at least 1 of the sbs jumps consistently. The second sbs is sometimes the issue. Unfortunately for Lubov, both jumps are inconsistent and it's a surprise if she lands either of them. I see that as a massive difference. But that's just my opinion. Her beautiful qualities are undeniable, but the lack of jumps is never going to allow for tons of success (again IMO ;) )

I think I can count on about one hand the number of times she landed her SBS jumps cleanly in her career with Dylan. Think about it...3 sets of jumps for every competition, and say 4 comps a year... thats's 12 sets of jumps. I bet on average per season she would land 2 out of the 12.

I don't think there are ANY senior (top 10-12 ranked skaters) who have such a bad record with SBS jumps. Her other skills are all amazing though...don't get me wrong.

Anybody have any insight into what the problem is with her jumping? I had heard she landed them in practice. MD and KMT were good singles skaters before switching to pairs. I guess I am just wondering if Lubov had a real jump coach if it would make a difference.

A recent history of Wenjing Sui’s triple salchows:
Worlds 2017: fell
CoC 2017: stepped out
NHK 2017: clean
GPF 2017: scratchy with negative GOE
Olympics 2018: stepped out
4CC: fell

But she’s still a queen.

Peng has been doing side by side double salchows all year. Tarasova is having big trouble with the triple toe this year. Zabiiako doesn’t do salchow. Stolbova’s triple toes and salchows were 50/50. Even Savchenko made her fair share of mistakes. Not to mention, pair guys struggle with jumps too - Vladimir Morozov messes up the combo in the free skate frequently, and Chris Knierim struggles with side by sides. Also, if you don’t remember Bruno Massot and the double salchow, you must not know figure skating.

In short, Lubov has a chance. It’s not all about the jumps.

Sui does have a rough 3 Sal. But she has a quad twist;). Not yet this season, but if you want to fight Sui in the long run, you then have to bring your quad something.

Peng does not have a clean second triple. But she does have a clean triple toe and her throws are huge.

Lyubov can land her jumps; but when she does, they are generally URed. She is capable of the huge throws and fabulous lifts. But is Charlie?

Lee Barkell is what I considerer a real jump coach... and he has worked with her.

As of a week ago her mother was thanking someone for wishing them good luck this weekend. So it definitely happened suddenly. I wonder if he and his wife are moving back to the Ukraine.
Not because the mom was saying anything on social media that means there wasn't any plan .....

Well whatever happened to have Brasseur & Bardei to pull the plug on their partnership so suddenly, I wish them both luck in finding their way.

If Mark does decide to stay in Canada, I wonder if Kim DeGuise Leveille would be an potential option for him?!? She's lacking true pairs experience but has the long line that would match up great with his line.

Yes - I was really looking forward to seeing how they develop. I wonder if we're all wrong and that maybe she's going to skate with Trennt Michaud.... Just thought that I would throw that out there....

What? Michaud is training for worlds right now. No way will he break up that partnership to skate with Brasseur.

What I’m curious about is what will happen with Bardei. Will he stay in Canada or does he have to return to the Ukraine.

There are always AFTER world splits... I just think that Brasseur has a lot more potential than Walsh.

I do hope that Bardei remains in Canada... I like him!
