In honor of the ISU approving the age increase for Junior Pairs (this title could apply to Senior Ice Dancers too, lol)!

Pairs Multiple Entries for 2025 Worlds -

3 = CAN, JPN, GER
2 = HUN, ITA, GEO, AUS, USA

Qualifying Rounds were eliminated at the ISU Congress so we're back to the old qualifying system and the Direct Entries process below no longer applies -

Direct Entries = 19 - if all countries with multiple entries use all of their spots then only 5 teams from the Qualifying Round to the Championship Round Short Program. It is possible, though, that only 15 DE spots will be used (JPN 2, HUN 1, GEO 1, AUS 1) which will give 9 teams the opportunity to advance from the QR. Any way you slice it, it's going to be FIERCE next year in the Qualifying Round with likely entries from NED, CHN, UKR, FIN, POL, GBR, PHI, AUT, SWE, CZE and FRA.
Skate Austria will host an ISU Development Seminar “Pair Skating Days” on July 1-7, 2024 in picturesque Zell am See (SW of Salzburg) with Alison Purkiss, Knut Schubert, Severin Kiefer & Miriam Ziegler - more info: https://skateaustria.at/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Pair-Skating-Days-2024-Information-FIN.pdf
ISU Council's proposal for the following age limits for Junior Pairs that passed at the ISU Congress yesterday:
21 for women, 23 for men [as of July 1]. Maximum 7 years age gap between the partners.
So, I looked through the SB list for Pairs, the ISU bios, and the USFS Nats bios to figure out which teams the ISU age increase would positively impact and allow to compete additional junior seasons if the ISU Council proposal passes - I don't think it's realistic to think either the USFS or Skate Canada proposals will pass. I'm not sure who among the Canadian pairs that haven't competed internationally yet would be positively impacted by the age increase (none of their intact teams that competed int'lly are aging out of juniors this year) - perhaps someone can chime in with that info. And, obviously, I've left off the teams that have already split up.

* = skater who ages out without the age increase

de Nardin/Rossi Lopez* ESP – 2 additional seasons (split)
Ehrhard*/Pellegris FRA – 2 additional seasons
Metelkina/Berulava* GEO – 2 additional seasons
Ackermann/Harms* GER - 1 additional season
Steblyanka*/Gneiding* GER - 2 additional seasons (split)
Shimizu/Honda* JPN – 2 additional seasons
Pacha/Derechowski* POL – 2 additional seasons
Pazienza/Knorr* SUI - 2 additional seasons
Delis/Schwab* USA – 1 additional season
Williams/Lewer* USA - 2 additional seasons
Just for the sake of clarity these are the technical changes that were approved for next season for the Singles & Pairs disciplines.

Thanks! Added them - they've been together for so long now that they don't feel new even though this coming season will be their first, lol.

Another new pairs team!

Axel Ahmed has switched from Men's Singles for Pairs and partnered with Yasmeen Yajjou. I've never heard of her but he is still young enough for juniors so I presume they'll be starting out on the JGP this season since France has 2 spots in each JGP event.

I found this very interesting regarding the Triple Twist. I found a video where it shows a Triple Twist comparison between Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud, CAN and Annika Hocke and Robert Kunkel, GER. It was from 2023 Skate America. The video is in slow motion to show the comparison.

What the author of the video explained is the correct way for the landing. I didn't know this about the Triple Twist. So I learned something new.

I noticed the difference in the GoEs, and it does make a difference if done correctly.

Bringing this over from the US Pairs discussion -

Yes, Pereira/Michaud have some issues with their 3tw landing. Trennt also struggled with the element with his previous partner, Evelyn Walsh. It's actually a lot better with Lia than it was with Evelyn but it's still a flawed element.

Very broadly speaking, my general observation is that the teams we see competing internationally who are coached by Bruno Marcotte and Alison Purkiss usually have the "over the shoulder" catch, flawed technique. They do manage to complete the element but it just isn't quite as good as a lot of other teams on the international scene and it does sometimes lead to scary landings. Having said that, I don't usually cringe and fear for the safety of those teams like I do with Vaipan-Law/Digby, whose 3tw landings are often so bad that it very nearly results in a fall.

Gabbie Izzo is posting pics from Salzburg on her IG stories this week...

Salzburg is where Severin Kiefer's pairs group is based, lending more credence to the unconfirmed partnership with Luc Maierhofer.

Chloe Panetta announced her retirement:
Well, that leaves Flavien Giniaux partner-less again. And, FWIW, unless Faula/Belle have significantly improved in this off-season, I think that FRA TBD host spot at GPdF is going to wind up going to a non-French team.

Skate Austria has photos up on their IG of the Pairs Skating Camp they held this past week.

Pereira/Michaud were there to help demonstrate.

In the first photo, I believe, from L-R

Faula/Belle, Schaller/Mayr, Izzo/Maierhofer, ???, Pereira/Michaud

Second photo - junior teams including a potential new team for Austria - Paola Jurisic/Michail Savenkov, Heckova/Valky (SVK), Rothenbuehler/Berei (HUN), Telemaque/Coulon (FRA), unknown

Third photo - Novice teams including potential new Estonian team (the Estonian fed was tagged in several HG stories that Skate Austria shared this week during the camp), Aschl/Aschl AUT, and three other unknown teams.

So, at this point it seems like Izzo/Maierhofer is about as confirmed as can be without an official announcement and the only question would be if they're looking to represent Austria or the USA.

I believe Romane Telemaque/Lucas Coulon FRA are the "unknown" pair right next to Rothenbuehler/Berei in the second photo?

All of the teams have been identified per the following article re-tweeted by AnythingGOEs -

The article doesn't correctly identify the teams in order from left to right (the captions have Schaller/Mayr are flipped with Izzo/Maierhofer, Telemaque/Coulon are flipped with Wood/Lapsky, and I'm positive from IG that the two Austrian teams are flipped in the novice list)
Senior teams - confirms Izzo/Maierhofer are going to represent Austria and a new Canadian senior team!
Faula/Belle FRA
Schaller/Mayr AUT
Izzo/Maierhofer AUT
Cristina Lyons/Marty Haubrich CAN
Pereira/Michaud CAN

Junior teams -
Jurisic/Savenkov AUT
Heckova/Valky SVK
Rothenbuehler/Berei HUN

Novice teams -

Re-posting from Great Skate Debate -

Official announcement for Brooke McIntosh & Marco Zandron - waiting for Brooke's release with the intention to represent Spain next season. Per Skate Canada's updated release policies, Brooke has to sit out the entire following season after she last represented Canada (she and Benjamin Mimar competed at Skate Canada & GP Espoo last season).

So, we have a country and a debut - summer 2025

AnythingGOEs noticed there is a new North Korean pairs team - Tae Ok Ryom / Kum Chol Han
Ryom competed with her previous partner in the 2018 Winter Olympics, and their last international competition was 2019 Worlds where they finished 11th. Han's only international experience was on the JGP in 2018 & 2019 - he and his previous partner's highest finish was 5th at JGP Chelyabinsk.

Manuel Piazza has teamed up with Julia Sylvia Gunarsdottir and they will represent Iceland!

Manuel's last competition representing Italy with Anna Valesi was 2023 CoC, so they should be eligible to begin competing in mid-November.

So far, through the first JGP and the first Challenger, it is clear that the discipline is improving a lot on the technical side. Only one of the 15 senior teams competing at John Nicks did not attempt a triple for their SBS jumps in the SP. Not all of the attempts were successful but we've moved well beyond the SBS Double Salchow days of a couple years ago.
