I haven't seen any of the nominated films and now I don't plan to, with the exception of CODA which I can't see because it's on a streaming service I don't get
You can subscribe to AppleTV+ for $5/month, so you could get it for a month to see CODA.

I hate it that these days we can't even get many Oscar nominees in theatres. I don't want to have to subscribe to multiple alternatives jyst to see these movies.
I miss the theatre experience too. Unless one lives in a big city where there are theaters playing these films, it seems that most of the opportunities to see any of these sort of non-blockbuster type of movies is through various streaming platforms. It's going to get worse as more streaming platforms are going to join the Oscar race with their own distributed films.

Are DVDs still a thing? I haven't stepped inside a public library in ages but once I am comfortable, I want to start renting DVDs.

Yes, DVDs still exist and my local library has a pretty good collection of movies and TV/streaming series. That’s how I have kept up the past two years. No fee to rent and they had curbside pickup until very recently.

Even if your library doesn't have curbside pickup, it may have a shelf where you can pick up your reservations, and a self-service kiosk. I don't think I've actually checked out a book at the desk in years. In the door, grab book, hit the kiosk, and out the door. It's great.

I live in the 5th largest city in the country. I still don't get to see many of the nominated films. Not long ago, the theatres used to run marathons of all the best picture nominated movies.

I saw Belfast on my portable dvd player. It was good but I was confused by some things. First, it took me a while to realize Frankie/Buddy was the same boy. Also it took a while to understand all the characters. At the end, after the titles they showed Keneth Branagh come on the scene, in color. It went on for a very long time. I couldn't tell if it was that way in theatres or if the dvd was showing something special. I will watch it again when I have more time. Right now I am swamped.

Such a great piece by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar:

“I just want this to be a cautionary tale for others not to romanticize or glorify bad behavior. And I want Smith to be the man who really protects others—by admitting the harm he’s done to others.”

Remember how exciting it was? "Hey, let's rent a movie tonight!" And everyone would go and scan the aisles trying to find the best movie or two for the evening...

Yes, and always so interesting to see the art/pictures on the video boxes.

Which brings to mind the art and beauty of vinyl covers, way back in the day. Loved the ones with four pages, where you open up the middle pages.

I guess one could go on and on in this way, about certain things from the past.

In some ways it is true that you don't know what you've got till it's gone.

Yes! I’m such a visual person too. If I rent a movie from iTunes now I kinda have to know the name vs seeing everything at the rental store.

I do hate that people are using the open marriage as a punchline (no pun intended) and are saying that Will should have been okay with Chris' joke because they laughed at jokes about their marriage. As much as I disagree with Will's reaction, the open marriage is something they chose. Jada did not choose to have alopecia. People are also saying that Will reacted that way to prove he's 'A MAN' since Jada wanted the open marriage, so he had to prove his masculinity. The open marriage and the joke about Jada's hair are two completely different and unrelated things. Just like I might be fine with someone teasing me about one thing, but be really sensitive about another thing.

I've also read that according to a 'source', Chris did not know about Jada's alopecia. I hope they don't spin it to 'we've been open about the alopecia so the joke shouldn't have been made...' - just because you've talked openly about something does not mean that everyone is aware of it. Additionally, she's had an incredibly close cropped haircut for years, so it isn't a huge leap for someone to have assumed it was a choice.

I hope the Academy's 'review' leads to them determining to at least suspend Will's membership. I don't agree with them taking back the award (which they aren't planning on doing anyway), since the accolade is completely separate from his actions. But his membership should be suspended (or revoked) since his actions go against the Academy's published standards which deems "physical contact that is uninvited" as unacceptable. I do hope he gets more than just a formal reprimand though, which is one of the outcomes they could decide. In between reprimand and expulsion from the Academy, consequences could, per the charter, include temporary or permanent loss of privileges to attend or participate in Academy events or temporary or permanent loss of eligibility to receive or hold Academy awards or honors.

My prediction, though, is that he will get a reprimand and not be invited to present at next year's Oscars, but nothing further than that.

If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.

No one's talking about Jada. She could have stopped Will from overreacting. She needs to just smile and then talk to Chris afterwards. He could just as easily apologize after the Oscars for not realizing or knowing about her condition.

Wanda Sykes spoke about the incident - she thinks Will should have been escorted out. She also said that at an after party Chris Rock apologized to her about the incident. When she asked why HE'S apologizing to her, he said that it was supposed to be their (her, Amy and Regina's) night as hosts, but that the Oscars are now about the incident. Jim Carrey said that if he was the one slapped, he would have sued and pressed charges against Will. The BAFTA organization said he would have been removed.
Even OJ Simpson has an opinion on the slap! When OJ Simpson says you reacted poorly, you know things are bad.

IMO the worst take I've read so far is Tiffany Haddish who said "maybe the world might not like how it went down, but for me, it was the most beautiful thing I ever seen because it made me believe that there are still men out there that love and care about their women, their wives." I get wanting to see people loving and caring about their wives, but to say that hitting someone is beautiful IMO is just wrong.

Chris Rock's brother Tony (who is also a comedian) apparently answers questions every Tuesday on Twitter responded to some queries about what happened:
  • Chris and Will did not speak and make up that night, despite what Diddy has implied
  • Tony does not approve of Will's apology
  • When asked how Chris is, Tony responded "Still rich" (lol)

A video has resurfaced of Will mocking a bald musician on the Arsenio Hall show 30 years ago, leading people to call him out for hypocrisy. Apparently the musician has spoken out saying he knew it was jokes and took it as such, and there is also no support to the claims the musician had alopecia.

Good for Wanda Sykes. I feel bad for the hosts and for the nominees and the winners who had their night overshadowed.

I know that Tiffany Haddish has gone through some rough times, and I have some degree of sympathy for her. But, I definitely don't look to her for good judgment. She was making jokes about her DUI arrest. Her comments about Will Smith are really sad on multiple levels.

Academy Reveals It Asked Will Smith to Leave 2022 Oscars After Outburst and He 'Refused'

Geez. No great options on the spur of the moment, especially since I don't think there were commercial breaks in other countries. They would have had to forcibly remove him while the ceremony was paused. But, that might have been better in the long term. And, if they knew he had won, not allowing him to receive the award onstage. I think one of the many bad things that happened that night was giving him the award, allowing him more time to speak than other winners, and people even giving him a standing ovation, which essentially normalized his behavior and sent a terrible message.

Imagine if someone at a comedy show didn't like a joke and behaved the way Will did, assaulting the comedian and refusing to leave.
