2023-24 ISU Grand Prix Assignments & projected alternates

Sorry Bekker/Hernandez

I don’t, I was wowed by them last season. Something needs to be fixed that when someone transitions to seniors and their points standings are now not high enough to get a single thing for an entire season on the world senior scene something needs to be corrected about that as far as who gets the Grand Prix assignments.

I’m really depressed about this but OTOH selfishly feel I’m missing less by not going to France.

I’m hoping for Bekker/Hern or Fun Finns, neither a threat to French teams. But Smart/Die k are crowd pleasers so maybe will be them.

I have a feeling they’re done. Which upsets me for a lot of reasons but one is that I think they never got the recognition they deserved. But if it’s a matter of physical or mental health, so be it.
I get the feeling as well that they are done and I am sorry also because they obviously did not want to be done but are trying and trying now for a long time to get back.

But sometimes it is the journey and not the end what we (and they) are getting. I hope they will make their peace with it.

Now please Orihana Pirinen as substitutes 😍

They would be my choice, but I suspect it will go to one of McNamara/Spiridonov, Harris/Chan or Fabbri/Ayer.

McNamara/Spiridonov are the highest on the alts list & the only US team with 1 GP, so this is one of the few opportunities for them to get a 2nd.

Harris/Chan and Fabbri/Ayer for the same IAM logic applied to the open GPdF spot that Smart/Dieck filled yesterday.

oh no, this is very distressing. :(
What an absolute bummer that HawBak are out of NHK. I really do hope this isn't the end for them.

Those are beautiful thoughts. I hope Kaitlin and Jean Luc see them and are comforted, whatever they may be going through.

You turned out to be correct! NHK/Japan in general loves Japanese skaters and skaters of Japanese origin who are competing for other countries, so I was really hoping that could tip the scales in Pirihara’s favour. It’s so rare in ice dance nowadays for a couple to have a distinctive, attractive, universally liked FD one season and to follow it up with an equally great but totally different program next season instead of trying to recreate the magic of their breakthrough program in a superficial way. I really respect Pirihara’s growth and commitment to every performance.

It should be easy enough to replace Grassl for GPdF with another Euro-based man... Shmuratko, plus Starostin & Guarino Sabate (move up to 1st 10 alts to replace Kataise & Yoshioka).

Rooting for Shmuratko, personally, since injury forced him to WD last season.

For NHK - personally, I'm rooting for Gorodnitsky since he's skated very well this season and deserves a 2nd.

I am sad for these reasons but also because it is less diversity in terms of countries.

So I wonder if Grassl finally realizes what is the matter or if his head is still in a cloud

One American team replacing another American team means zero change in diversity of countries in the field. Additionally, TurkVers are assigned to NHK, so adding OriPir would not have actually added to the diversity of countries either.

The only teams that would have added to the "diversity of countries" in the NHK field are Ignateva/Szemko or Harris/Chan since there are Canadian, French, British and TeamKoKo in the field already and the res of 1st 10 alts are from those countries.
