If Trump extended an invite to his BFF, then Ryom/Han might be there. If not, they could always wait to go to Beijing in the Fall. They don't have to be in Boston to clinch a spot.
Yeah, haven't heard much in the new admin about North Korea, so I have no idea whether or not Little Rocket Man would be willing to send either his pairs team or men's singles skater to Boston to try and qualify. I think they'd have a better chance at Worlds than at the OQE next September where we know one of those spots has Russia AIN written all over it.

No new pairs got mins at Merano who could also have a Worlds spot this year. I guess the last two pairs we are waiting on are Ros/Shu and Gam/Kor.

Looking over the CTES lists for each discipline, here's a rough estimate of the # of entries we'd see if Worlds was held in 28 days. The entry deadline is Feb 25, so this is the last week where skaters can achieve the CTES mins.

China's Ren/Xing earned the Dance min and North Korea's Ryom/Han earned the Pairs min at Asian Winter Games.

France's Faula/Belle earned the Pairs min, so France now has a team to substitute if Les Kovs get injured.

Yi Zhu CHN also earned the Women's min - skate-off with Xiangyi An at 4CCs for their Worlds spot!

Men (# of athletes with CTES min already) - 39 (7 warm-up groups)
1 entry - ARM (2), AUT (1), AZE (1), BUL (1), CAN (4), CHN (4), CZE (2), ESP (1), EST (3), GBR (1), GEO (1), GER (2), HUN (1), ISR (2), KAZ (1), MEX (1), MON (1), POL (2), PRK (1), SVK (1), SWE (2), TPE (1), TUR (1), UKR (2)
2 entries earned, only 1 qualified - SUI (1)
2 entries - FRA (6), ITA (6), KOR (6), LAT (2)
3 entries - JPN (9), USA (13)
Women (# of athletes with CTES min already) - 33 (6 warm-up groups)
1 entry - AUT (1), AZE (1), BUL (1), CAN (5), CHN (2), EST (1), FIN (3), FRA (2), GBR (1), GEO (1), ISR (2), ITA (4), KAZ (1), LAT (1), LTU (1), NOR (1), POL (1), ROU (1), SLO (1), SVK (2), TPE (1-currently not competing), UKR (1)
2 entries earned, only 1 qualified - BEL (1+1 injured for season)
2 entries - SUI (2)
3 entries - JPN (10), KOR (8+1 suspended), USA (9+1 now competing pairs)
Pairs (# of athletes with CTES min already) - 24 (6 warm-up groups)
1 entry - AUT (2), CHN (1 split), FIN (1), FRA (2), GBR (1), NED (1), POL (1), PRK (1), SUI (1), UKR (1), UZB (1)
2 entries earned, only 1 qualified - AUS (1), GEO (1), HUN (1)
2 entries - ITA (2+1 injured), USA (6)
3 entries earned, only 2 qualified - GER (2), JPN (2)
3 entries - CAN (4)
Ice Dance (# of athletes with CTES min already) - 37 (8 warm-up groups)
1 entry - AUS (1), AZE (2), CHN (1+1 retired), CYP (1), ESP (2), GEO (1), GER (2), HUN (1), IRL (1), ISR (2+1 split), JPN (1), KOR (1), NED (1), POL (1), SUI (1), SVK (2), SWE (1), TUR (1), UKR (2)

I updated my post about the skaters looking to get their CTES mins because Virtanen has been added to the Bellu Memorial entries.

Was just looking at the Bellu Memorial women's entries and completely missed the fact that Josefin Taljegard has now been added. Guess she did not take to heart the epic failure that was Izzo/Maierhofer doing two competitions in four days this past week.

Why did they do two in a week? Did the other Austrian team overtake them in points?

Valtter Virtanen (FIN) added himself to the Bellu Memorial start list after having just done 5 competitions in 4 weeks. He was able to get closer to the tech minimums in Tallinn last week, but not enough. From Tallinn he flew straight to Merano where he competed the following day. There he improved his PB by about 9 points, but not the tech minimum, 0.83 points are still missing.

In the Finnish women's Worlds qualification ranking, Janna Jyrkinen is now only 0.97 points ahead of Olivia Lisko. Jyrkinen is competing in Italy and Lisko in Romania this week, so both are still able to improve their statistics.

(Linnea Ceder is also competing at Bellu Memorial, and she is kind of still in the mix too - if she reaches the tech min AND improves her SB by a mile to 174.39 or more, IF neither Jyrkinen nor Lisko improve theirs. But I'm a novice in math and politics, so I might be wrong here)

Now they have time to rest and reset, and prepare for the qualifier...

Question: if a fed gains an Olympic spot but their entry is injured and the fed has no alternate, does the spot go to the next fed on the list that "almost made it"? What takes precedence: worlds or the qualifier?

The OQE results determine priority for re-allocation of all unused spots regardless of whether they were earned at Worlds or the OQE.

There is a deadline before the qualifying competition that, depending on the year and document, asks or requires that members let the ISU know if they are planning to use earned quotas. That way, they expand the spots earned at the qualifier, ie, those spots are allocated after the competition. Members can withdraw up to fairly close to the Olympics, in which case members are taken off of the stand-by list from the Olympic Qualifier.

Sometimes skaters are injured, they miss the required minimums, they are not otherwise eligible for the Olympics -- ex: passport didn't come through in time, they didn't meet some NOC standards, even though their skating Fed nominates them -- they split, etc. There have been NOCs that have made certain scores and/or placements at the European Championships a requirement, and a spot opens at the last minute from the stand-by list.

Update from this week -

No Pairs or Ice Dance Teams achieved the Worlds CTES mins.

Men - Jari Kessler CRO is the only man who earned his trip to Boston - congratulations!

Women - none of the women at Road to 26 or Bellu Memorial earned the CTES mins (Hovine and Taljegard both came up just short again); based on the SP at 4CCs, I think it's a pretty safe bet to state none of them will earn the CTES mins for Worlds either.

The new CTES didn't seem to have much effect in reducing the warm-up groups for Worlds. I wonder if the ISU will increase the CTES even further for next season.

I'd say yes for the Men & Ice Dance, probably not for the Women, and probably not for Pairs.

What if ISU just stated the number of entries available, and whoever has the highest TES gets the remaining spots? The fact that only 33 women are eligible, and ISU's goal appears to be 36, means that there's a couple of extra available spots.

Also, I wish that the ISU would have passed the additional regulation in pairs that if a country with multiple spots can't use all of them, it goes to the next country, so that Italy or the US could send an additional team in place of Japan and Germany. The fact that North Korea probably won't send their pair to the US means the pairs competition is even smaller.

Once the Russians are back the pairs and women’s numbers will go up.

But if the ISU's goal is to keep it at a certain number of spots for Worlds, why not just make the rule explicitly so? If the Russians fill up the remaining spots, that is one thing. Why let the spots "go to waste?"

If ISU was to have a firm maximum number of entries per discipline, and a country doesn't use all their earned spots, then I would prefer the unused spots are made available first to countries that have no entry at all, then to the next country (as described by zebobes). My reasoning is that would be more likely to encourage more countries to participate in the sport.

I didn’t realize how many men there are. I might miss the first couple of groups so as not to wear out husband too fast!
I can't , because I want to see Davide. My poor husband. But he is just going Tuesday and Thursday. My cousin, sister and niece are going one each of the other days.

 We have the same strategy, my sister-in-law and niece will replace husband for at least two of the comps, and nobody’s going to Pairs which I’ll watch on TV.

I have been thinking of planning a tourist morning for Mr. Cass during the men’s short because I am not sure he will survive 8 warm up groups.
On the one hand we should be happy to have husbands who literally go along for all this. (Mine at least gets to hang out with my brother and sister-in-law whom he really likes.) on the other we do have to worry about overdosing them. So there’s that.
