2019-20 Canadian Men news & updates

I think we have at least three Canadian men that have the potential to make the top 5 at worlds with two clean programs (Roman, Nam & Keegan). But the key is consistent and clean. Having seen them all live i think the improvements artistically by Roman is impressive and Keegan is always entertaining as can be Nam.

With two clean, strong programs, yes. The question is who will make the sole World team spot? Whoever does must be in good shape physically and mentally to try and bring back two spots for Canadian men. If Keegan is able to be in a frame of mind to come back to train for Nationals, he could make the team. He certainly has the talent, experience and stature to do so. I'm sure Keegan will have huge support from family, friends, fans, and competitors to make it back to competition this season.

Only havng the one spot available, should Keegan or one of the others make top five at Worlds this season, does that bring back two spots for Canadian men? I forget the rules governing Worlds spots for the following year when only one entry is competing.

They need to be in the top ten.

They need to be in the top ten.

Well that's doable, for two spots!

I was asking though moreso about whether having only one entry can ever garner 3 spots? For e.g., if the entry is in the top five would that help, or does the lone entry have to be in the top three to gain 3 spots for the following year? Or with only one entry, is it impossible to bring back 3 spots?

Ah, so a sole entry must be in the top two to gain 3 spots for the following year, and in the top ten to regain two spots. Thanks.

I don't think 3 spots is going to happen with the final results at Worlds this year for Canadian men, but of course, amazing and unexpected turn of events are always possible in figure skating. :)

Isn’t it top 3?

To gain three spots for the following year, it must be a top 3 placement if there are two entries competing, I'm guessing. And top 2, if only one entry is competing.

I would love whomever is chosen to represent Canada at the upcoming World Championships, to first and foremost, skate their best. Should they place within the top ten, even better.

Quadruple jumps make men's skating at the international level such a hit and miss affair. Some days, the ducks line up in a row, and everyone does well. Other days, competitions can be a total train wreck.

One entry finishing top 10 gives 2 spots, or top 2 gives 3 spots

Yeah, that's what I guessed after Sylvia's reply. I only expressed it differently than you in my response to chantilly's query.

If there are two entries then only one of those entries needs to place top three to gain 3 spots, as long as the second entry places in the top 10?

I don't even recall the top 2 rule, because it likely doesn't happen often that there's only one entry from a country who ends up placing top two.

If there are 2 entries their total standings must add up to no more than 13 to get 3 spots eg 3rd and 10th or 6th and 7th.

Yep, this is the rule I am familiar with (though I didn't state it correctly earlier). Rules regarding one entry, I wasn't familiar with. :)

Roman Sadovsky after his free skate at Finlandia Trophy: "Don't feel that I fully performed my programs the way I could"

Good outing for Keegan in the Skate America SP. In third, but a virtual tie for second with 96.34 points. With just one quad, he's just 6 points off Chen, and 0.23 off Aliev, both of whom did two quads (including lutz). Bodes well for the season!
Third in TES, second in PCS, and not a single GOE below a +1. Just like previous years though, he needs to work on getting his footwork to a level 4, as well as his sit/sit spin.

Unfortunately not so strong in the long for Keegan. In the K&C he said he couldn't concentrate. A lot of small errors (like turn-outs) that really added up. And again, low levels on footwork.

Not too sure what I think of the FP. It feels like he's rushing in it and his skating has no variation in it (no highs/lows/faster/slower/etc movement). Love his choreo sequence though.

Even though it's not the skate he wanted, HUGE kudos to him for doing what he did just weeks after his brother's death. And I still think he's the one to beat to make the World team.

I don't think there's much dispute there. Even with all the errors, his total score is better than any other Canadian man's so far.

Too bad about the free skate errors, but as you say, overall I think he can be very proud of this competition, though I suspect it's not one he'll want to dwell on in later years due to the circumstances.

Just watched Keegan's SP. He did a great job, but boy...the music could have been anything in the background. Not a great song for a program IMO.

I think most people thought that he was the clear frontrunner last year, but came 3rd at Canadians...

Anyway, nice article after the SP on the challenges of competing so soon after his brother's death.
"Coming here this week was a huge decision for me with everything that's happened," said Messing, who placed third with a 96.34. "I was trying to keep my mind very focused. I was distracting my mind a little bit while thinking about my wife who was sitting up in the stands supporting me. This was a very hard skate to come to. Just being on the ice the last few weeks has been one of the most difficult things that I've had to do. I've just tried to stay physically prepared, rely on my training and be able to put out a performance like that."

The frontrunner can lose (and did, in that case), and he may yet lose the World spot this year, but as of now he is clearly the frontrunner.

Keegan's short program performance got me teary eyed. I think the song being more focused on his wife allowed him to forget about the more negative things that has happened to him lately.

The free being less personal would allow him to drift off.

All in all, competing here at all is already such a victory.
