U.S. Men 2024-25 news & updates

I'm not sure. His bio lists Roman Serov -- is that someone who coaches with M/S?
Roman Serov was his coach before them, unless he’s gone back.

Serov competed in Russia probably just after Skorniakov switched to Uzbekistan, but I’m sure they knew each other back in the day. Serov was at one point trying quad loops in competition, and ended up switching to represent Israel.

At past competitions, I have enjoyed Kazanecki's smooth, flowy style when he is "on."
I can't speak to Cardinal Classic -- have any fancams surfaced? -- but I am excited for him. :)
I think his Cardinal Classic scores probably were PBs, and I hope it is safe to assume that he will be added back to ISP.

"... In 2017, [Kazanecki] started working with Roman Serov in Hackensack, New Jersey. ...
In the summer of 2023, Kazanecki and his family moved from their home in New Jersey to Bethesda, Maryland. The main reason for the move was for better training for Kazanecki’s siblings, Julius and Olimpia, who are speed skaters. Moving to the Virginia-DC-Maryland area allowed Kazanecki to start training in Reston, Va. with Tatiana Malinina and Roman Skorniakov. ..."

So ... just my opinion, but I would be surprised if Lucius had returned to Serov (who BTW is Aleksandr Fegan's coach).

His TES was high but his PCS looks like he needs to work on that area.

Of course consistency on the quads does seem to "magically" improve some skaters PCS. (Cough, cough Egadze comes to mind). :saint:
Oh, his PCS definitely needs work, but his combined SP+FS score would have been 229.91, which is just a half point lower than Jacob's ISU SB of 230.41 from Jr Worlds and would put him 38 on the ISU SB list last season - ahead of Camden (226.97 Cranberry SB 43), Tomoki (226.38 NHK SB 44), Patrick Blackwell (221.56 JGP Ostrava SB 48), Maxim (216.38 SkAm SB 57), etc...

All I'm saying is that's a score that should, as others have noted, at least get him on the ISP, and put him in the conversation for the SkAm host spot.

I'm curious about how the GP assignments play out with regard to the US men. Obviously, Ilia & Jason are guaranteed 2. Torgy, Broussard & Jimmy are in the SB Top 24 & Jacob is in the WS Top 24, so they're each guaranteed 1.

The past couple seasons, the only time a skater in the SB Top 24 didn't get 2 GPs when the initial assignments came out was 2023 with Kataise - and Japan was maxed out with 3 men at every GP, otherwise, I'm sure he would have gotten 2. That leads me to believe that Torgy, Jimmy & Lucas will get 2 assignments on the initial list when it comes out (rumor on X is the athletes allegedly have been told they'll find out their GP assignments on Friday).

Being in the WS Top 24 has been a bit less of a guarantee for 2 GPs - Levandi only got 1 two years ago and Yoshioka only got 1 last season (Japan wasn't maxed out everywhere, so he could have gotten a 2nd). I think Jacob will likely get 2 though, because he did win the JGPF and that was enough to guarantee Memola 2 on the initial assignments list two years ago.

But, the rest of the US men who've been dragging them & us through a muddy slog this Olympic cycle, are in that grey area on the SB list where they may get 1 or they may not, and I just don't know how much investment the USFS has in any of them to lobby for them to be thrown a bone by any of the other host feds. Heck, last season, Torgy only got 1 on the initial list and he was SB 25, and Tomoki was a surprise pick for NHK because he was only SB 39 - and, in fact, he was the lowest-ranked skater to get a GP assignment aside from the host picks - and he was chosen ahead of a couple of non-host skaters (Reshtenko & Mihhail Selevko). Maybe Camden is a host pick for SkAm as the reigning US bronze medalist, but part of me could really see the USFS trying to light a fire under all these guys' butts by assigning both Ilia & Jason to SkAm and telling the rest of the men they get to duke it out at Cranberry for the last SkAm host spot.

And if someone like Lucius wants to put himself in that conversation by competing at Cranberry (especially because we know the USFS only has 7 guaranteed JGP spots for the men), then I say more power to him. The other guys have been farting around for years with not much to show for their efforts. I like a youngster who is hungry & wants to "be in the room where it happens" so to speak.

I never watched Trusova for art. I watched a spunky jock just going for everything.
The ‘art’ , choreography or composition, whatever label you would like to slap on it, is important to any FS program and is what differentiates our sport.
Trusova’s spunky jock routines didn’t engage me as good skating because there was no connection to any of it. Midori Ito was a spunky jock who engaged audiences. Trusova just bounded up and down the rink, jumping and spinning to Eteri choreo and Eteri technique
