2015 - 2016 TV Season

Did anybody pay attention to the Creative Arts Emmys? Apparently they changed the voting rules. Before, members of the voting body of 19,000+ had to be on blue ribbon panels in order to vote and each panel consisted of like two dozen members. Members were allowed to join up to four panels and members of the panel had to watch the submitted "tapes" before they were allowed to vote. Many people said the only people who had time for that were older members and that's why the Emmy winners skewed towards older tastes AND why they kept picking the same winners (because the same people would vote for the category year after year and they like what they like). Now the voting is totally open and anybody within the branch (actor, writer, director, etc.) can vote. Technically, they have to watch all submitted tapes from the nominees (except for Best Comedy or Drama Series where they don't have to prove they watched it), but nobody is sure how the Television Academy is keeping track of that.

I think this makes the Emmys much more populist and open to change, but it also makes them a lot more susceptible to fall for fads like the Golden Globes or have voters vote based on popularity rather than their impression from actually watching all of the nominees. I actually really liked the old way even if it made them seem more conservative because at least I felt like it came from people who actually watched the nominees and that made the competition a lot fairer than the Academy Awards even if I didn't agree with the choices. But then, people always complained about the same people winning all of the time (especially if people had another horse in the race), so this should appease them. Of course, there is a problem with the way the Emmys judge winners based on submitted episodes, which is a disadvantage for many shows that require a viewing of the entire season to really get the show's full impact or cannot be fully appreciated or can be confusing when the narrative is sliced up with only 1-6 episodes.

I made it through about 12 minutes of Best Night Ever before turning it off. I admit I'm probably not the target demo here, but the whole thing was pointless at best, irritating at worst. I have a great deal of affection for NPH and though that that might be enough to carry the show, but it wasn't, at least not for me. There was nothing else there other than people who want to get themselves on camera. Whatever.

NPH's many talents are wasted.

I just finished watching Best Time Ever from my DVR. I like the concept of the show but I think as awesome as NPH is, he really is a better fit for sitcoms and movies. I understand that he doesn't want to be "stuck" what he did with HIMYM, but it just seemed odd with what he was doing with Best Time Ever. Maybe it would be better if someone with a background as a comedian was doing what NPH was doing.

I also didn't get what Reese Witherspoon was doing as the announcer. At. All.

I thought the previews looked excruciating so I didn't even watch it.

As for the Emmys, I think all awards are basically arbitrary. It's fun to win them. It's fun to even be nominated. But I consider them meaningless as there is no system that will result in the true best of whatever-it-is-thats-being-voted on will win and deserving whatever won't be overlooked. So, basically, I don't care if they change the rules or don't change the rules as long as they don't do something completely outrageously unfair.

True, but it means a lot to a lot people in the industry. Even awards one gets for non-entertainment work means a lot to people in their respective fields even if they know the work is a lot more than just one night of recognition.

Count me as another person who was disappointed with the NPH show. It wasn't just the execution. The whole concept was weak. I was under the impression that it was going to be more like a variety show. I'd be shocked if the show were renewed.

I'm going to have to go here, there and everywhere to find the new shows I want to see but I prefer that than keeping everything on the original big three networks. Case in point: Most of all I'm looking forward to a new Amazon series called "The Man in the High Castle" https://youtu.be/zzayf9GpXCI

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the Axis powers of America." That is one scary thought.

Muppets! Muppets! Muppets! :cheer2:

Also happy for the return of BBT (aka the only sitcom I watch) and Scandal. And I'll probably check out Minority Report, Blind Spot, and Life in Pieces.

I am really excited about Big Bang Theory and How to Get Away With Murder coming back.

The new shows next week I am going to try are Muppets, Scream Queens, The Player, and Heroes Reborn. I am skeptical about how good The Player and Heroes Reborn will actually be. After the ho-hum that is Best Time Ever (at least so far), I'm wondering if NBCs new shows will be a bust.

I'm going to have to go here, there and everywhere to find the new shows I want to see but I prefer that than keeping everything on the original big three networks.

That's the way it is for me too (and may become the new way to watch shows). I don't have a TV or cable and watch using my computer and a large monitor, have Netflix and Hulu accounts, and also watch series that are free on BBC. I have purchased series on Amazon. My partner and I often watch the same show every night until we come to the end of a series (on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon etc.). I think with the rise of digital media the way we watch TV is changing; people are looking for more flexibility, a greater range of shows to watch, and better quality. They do not care where the show is hosted/produced. They are willing to pay to watch a show of a good calibre. Eventually, there may be many production companies, large and small, offering shows for which they will be levy a single charge for series. A company like Amazon will be necessary to provide an interface to diverse "sellers" (or perhaps Hulu or Netflix will do that).

I found the Player to be procedural like. The action is good, but aside from the blonde British character, I wasn't particularly drawn in by any character.

Blindspot was a little more compelling and had a great opening sequence, but I personally am not too fond of the lead actors.

While waiting for the new fall tv season to begin, I watched Detectorists this weekend. I'd picked this up on spec from the library and was incredibly glad I did.

It's a short series, 6 half-hour episodes, about two "detectorists" -- people (mostly men) who comb the English countryside with metal detectors looking for lost Saxon and Roman treasure. That searching is of course a metaphor for what they're looking for in their lives. It's a dry comedy but with a lot of genuine emotion and poignancy, and somehow manages to not mock these people who really do exist.

It's a delightful series and I highly recommend it, especially if you're a fan of that particularly British style of quiet, quirky comedy-drama. Written/directed by and starring Mackenzie Crook (from The Office and Game of Thrones, among others), as well as Toby Jones (too many things to list) and Rachael Stirling (Bletchly Circle).

I can hardly believe Hell On Wheels final season is broken in two and I have to wait until next year to see it through to the end. :(

I forgot to WOO HOO Castle!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried to watch a a bunch of DVR'd stuff yesterday (like three Friday Night Lights) to free up some room for the 10:00 shows I might fall asleep during!

That was kind of an ungrammatical run-on sentence, huh!?
