Friday watch party: 1999 Worlds SP

Oh man, shot of John Zimmerman...that was him right? Or am I just seeing things.

If you are speaking of around 3:13, that was NOT Zimmerman. It was a shot of Fontana's Italian teammates. It looked to me like Italian ice dancer Maurizio Margaglio.

In 1999, Fontana & Zimmerman may or may not have even been dating. Maybe they hooked up sometime later and things heated up by the 2002 Olympics. They were married in 2003.

Jennifer Robinson always reminds me of the 2002 Ladies SP that was cleanly skated but somehow sort of boring for the most part. Robinson's is one I always remember because I was baffled that it was obviously choreographed to show character and be entertaining but it just wasn't.

I grew to become a Jennifer Robinson-fan over the years. She worked hard, and slowly rose in the rankings. She got top ten at worlds and got Canada two spots. Her back cross foot spin is very good. Her basic skating quite good too.

I would never confuse Maurizio with Zimmerman so if I was confused Zimmerman with someone else, it wouldn't be him . It was beforehand with a shot Zimmerman in the stands before they show a shot of her Italian teammates.

Ugh that "flirting" program with the polka dots that Sandra loved so much. I find this program much better constructed.

I respect Robinson for how hard she worked and what she managed to do considering the judges never liked her that much.

She also, I think, often gets unfairly cited as the leading example of the problems in the Canadian ladies in this era, when the nadir came before the 1998-2002 quad where she was the main Canadian lady.

I know who you mean, and yeah, not Margaglio. I think it was Zimmerman - him or Peter Tchernyshev, who I used to get confused a lot.

Wasn't it Rechnio who took an ordinal from Kwan at 1998 Worlds SP where Kwan was clean? I can see why as she skates totally differently from Kwan and I can see a judge preferring that style.

I think Rechnio could have had the career Slutskaya had if she just skated better throughout her career...except Slutskaya could do steps.
