MK's legacy is a bit of an inconvenient truth in the present era, when Alysa Liu is easily winning nationals over a skater like Mariah Bell. I thought Bell's performance in the free skate was the closest thing we've seen to a Kwan-at-nationals moment in the years since the Kween retired. USFS spent decades holding Kwan on a pedestal, but now it's in a weird position of needing to promote the little jumping bean who with no emotional power on the ice.
You are measuring with the wrong
yardstick

IF Bradie and Mariah could regain that 3rd spot at the coming Worlds, who would likely benefit next season? Alysa would still be age ineligible, and others like Karen and Amber aren't that promising.

Even at this Championships, there's the top 3 and there's everyone else. I am really crossing my fingers for a healthy return for Ting Cui.

Yeah the gap between Alysa, Bradie and Mariah and the rest of the field is huge. Ting and Hanna will make the field much stronger for sure next season. There is talent in the Junior ranks someone like isabeau Levito is a firecracker but she's only 12 and by the time she moves up to Senior if she makes that far Bradie and Mariah will most likely be done.

I agree. Why send an 18 year old who doesn't even have a 3lutz and will get beat by girls much younger. Give Calista the experience.

Because Starr may bring home the # they need to make 13 points and earn three berths next season. And Junior Worlds could bring in enough points to keep Starr on the GP. She may not place high enough for either, but she has a shot.

Calista has not shown she is anywhere close to doing that.

I beg to differ as I thought that Karen's performance at Nationals was very promising, if you take into consideration that she was out last season with an injury and where she was in the Autumn. If she remains uninjured and focuses on her training over the Summer I could see her being a threat to Bradie and Mariah within six months, she is, to my mind, fundamentally a better skater than both of them and could if she so chooses be a part of the conversation next season.

Amber is a different story as I have never seen her put together a clean LP and I suspect she might do well if she would not react so emotionally to skating a clean SP, I could be wrong but I suspect that these enormous emotional reactions to well-skated SPs don't do her a bit of good when it comes to getting her head together for the LP. Again, just speculating.

Karen still has potential but it’s a matter of her devoting her time to full-time training among other things like figuring out her boot situation. She has that natural spring to her jumps and the speed and spins. I do think she needs another coach though to make her jumps more consistent in terms of rotation.

Karen’s jump technique needs to be seriously retooled to make them more consistent. Delayed rotation and not tight enough in the air. She depends a lot on height (like Mirai did, and Jason used to), so a little bit of jet lag or nerves can result in under rotation.

Here’s an article with Sheehan discussing designing Lipinski’s dress:

Johnny must have been ad-libbing 'Jef Billings,' and either Tara had forgotten, or she didn't think it was that important to correct Johnny. ;)

Tara and Johnny Re-creating the snake. LOL go to third and fourth image

 Maybe for U.S. ice dance thread...

Sierra Venetta has made huge strides this season, so with similar improvement, she could. Or Isabelle Inthisone. Or any of Ting, Hannah, or Amber.

Can I also add I liked Sierra and Paige Rydberg after seeing them at nationals. Paige's short was to "Man, I feel like a Woman" and was very peppy and fun. It was a nice change from boring or dreary music.

I was bored by Paige's SP. She skated through the music, and with a song like that, you have to sell it. a hand gesture here and there do not make for lively choreography.

Also, can I add just how huge Rena’s jumps are? If she can become consistent and turn her double-Axel into a triple, she would be a firecracker of a skater.

Jeremy Abbott was a guest on Dylan M's and Asher Hill's skating show on Youtube. :) They discussed 2020 U.S. Nationals, and Jeremy emotionally talked about choreographing Gracie's programs and witnessing her brave comeback, etc.

Hey, whatever happened to Tyler Pierce?? I thought of her the other day. She was an upcoming Junior that finished 5th in 2016 Seniors and had a great 3Z-3T. I think she injured herself shortly thereafter, then I never saw or heard about her again .....

I also asked that question a couple of years ago. I think Silvia had responded. I don’t know at all, seems like she had an injury and then boom just gone forever. I thought she had a huge promise!

🤷🏻‍♂️

According to Wikipedia she withdrew from her last competition due to a “lumbar strain.” In 2016, I think it said. There are no further updates.

Hanna Harrell was interviewed by Ice Time Podcast (a Japanese/English podcast) and gave insight into her injury and plans for the future. Harrell said that she was immensely disappointed with her injury which she attributed to tendinitis. The pain had been on and off for six months and was exacerbated by competing in France. After France, Harrell was forced to withdraw from many competitions and had to make the very difficult decision of taking a prolonged rest. Harrell plans to no longer compete for the remainder of the season. She said that she wants to completely heal her injury before attempting to skate again. As for her plans, she wants to compete in Senior B’s next season and hopefully do well enough to go to Worlds/4CC.

Alysa has marvelous athletic talent, but she's still developing athletically and artistically, and she's still growing which means there are a lot of aspects of her skating where she needs to improve. Since she doesn't have great presentation skills, I personally wouldn't characterize her overall talent as 'exquisite.' I would describe her as charming, precocious, athletically adept, and a fast learner. At this point, it doesn't appear to me that Alysa has any substantial nerves or nervousness. She seems to mostly have desire, energy and excitement for competing.

Wengjing Sui has nerves of steel. Aliona Savchenko has nerves of steel. Maybe that's because those ladies have been through hell and back, and understand into their bones about what they are up against when engaged in high stakes competitive battles. Yes, Alysa knows a bit about what tough battles are like, but she's only in the early stages of learning what those battles are and can be about, and measuring what she's made of. Alysa has miles to go, and she doesn't need to get too far ahead of herself.

It's not easy to do and it's impressive. But to be honest, sometimes it's easier to be able to let the pressure roll off your back when you're young, eager and worry-free. It will be interesting to see how Alysa continues to develop, because let's face it, she's still growing in mind, body and spirit. As has been said in other threads here, young teenagers are still simply innocent chlldren.

Yes, she's just a child. IMO it's a bit soon to be favoring her for the 2022 OGM.

Also, unlike the Russian girls, she doesn't have anyone pushing her.

ITA about Wenjing and Aliona. They needed nerves of steel to compete with each other.

I'm personally not that excited over Alysa's skating, and I'm not invested in her programs. I'm impressed by her personality and her athletic talent and her steady, optimistic outlook, but I'm fairly detached at this point about all the female teenybopper quad & triple-axel hype both domestically and internationally.

ITA.

It was Chinese New Year the week of Nationals and I didn't get to watch skaters from the earlier groups. Thanks for your pointers. I will go check them out.

However, knowing how the US Fed made decisions in the past 20 years, I think it is highly unlikely that it will send any skater without any sort of GP or senior international experience to Worlds, to a pre-Olympic Worlds no less. So Sierra or Isabelle better focus on their summer and hopefully score a host invite for Skate America or at least the SLC challenger.

Also -

Q: which competition was Isabelle in?
A: In-this-one.

They did send Polina Edmunds to the Olympics in 2014 and Sarah Hughes to 1999 Worlds, but those were like the only time that happened in the modern era. They probably would have sent Sasha to 2000 Worlds if she had been able to qualify through medaling Junior Worlds, but she didn't. They probably would have loved to send Alyssa Liu last year or Mirai Nagasu and Rachel Flatt back in 2008 if it was possible. Tara Lipinski almost went to 1996 Worlds without doing any senior event prior, but she went to Nebelhorn that season. So, you're right that it's unlikely but not impossible if Sierra and/or Isabelle become undeniable some how.
